Ten students chosen to receive SoMi's Marshall Williamson Scholarship

The City of South Miami has awarded $11,000 to ten exceptional students as part of the city's Marshall Williamson Scholarship program.

The James T. Bowman Scholarship was established in 2003 to honor the second City of South Miami Afro-American Commissioner.

In March 2021, the Scholarship was renamed the Marshall Williamson Scholarship. The Scholarship was originally intended to encourage disadvantaged students who are residents of the Marshall Williamson area of South Miami who exhibit a strong desire for self-improvement and who wish to further their education beyond high school. The Scholarship now applies to disadvantaged students who are city-wide residents.

Join us in celebrating the accomplishments of these ten students and wishing them luck in their futures.

Work begins on Avalon property

The developer of the former Winn Dixie property on SW 73rd Street and SW 59th Avenue is beginning the demolition of the property.

Perimeter fencing has gone up, and major work on the property will soon be under way.

Sidewalks around the project will be closed to walkers during the work, but both pedestrians and local traffic will continue to have access to businesses in the area. However, you are urged to use caution when traveling around this, and any construction area.

New EV chargers open in SoMi garage - Parking discount for EV drivers

All electric vehicle drivers have new parking options in the heart of SoMi's Town Center.

Three new charging stations that can service up to six EVs have opened on the ground floor of the SoMi Municipal Parking Garage.

For a limited time, EVs will receive a discounted parking rate of $1.00/hour as well as a discounted charge rate of 20¢ per kilowatt!

The reduced rates are to encourage EV drivers to visit SoMi's Town Center and enjoy all the great shopping and restaurants.

Put the below address into your navigation and it will take you right to the garage entrance:

Even non-EV drivers get a reduced rate in the garage

Even if you drive a gas-powered vehicle, you still can enjoy a great deal when parking in the SoMi Municipal Garage.

The SoMi Municipal Parking Garage (which is right in the middle of the action,) is only $1.50/hour for non-EV vehicles. That's half the cost of parking elsewhere in the city.

Police Chief announces retirement

After 43 years of service, South Miami Chief of Police Rene Landa has announced his intention to retire at the end of August.

Chief Landa has been with SoMi PD since 2010. He has served as Chief since 2014. On behalf of the residents, visitors, and employees of the city, we extend our gratitude for his service and dedication and wish him the best of luck.

The City Commission has already taken the first steps towards finding the Chief's successor.
