Heartwood Gallery Meet the Artist

at the Saluda Art Stroll

Saturday, April 13, 4-6pm

The newly formed Saluda Art Alliance is sponsoring Saluda Art Strolls on the second Saturday of each month of the 2024 season.

Come stroll downtown and visit the many shops and studios, view the art each has to offer and be treated to light refreshments. The first Saluda Art Stroll is Saturday, April 13, 4-6pm. Join us at Heartwood Gallery as we welcome Saluda artist Hannah Seng for our first “Meet the Artist” during the first Saluda Art Stroll.

Hannah will be bringing extra work to share and be available between 4 and 6 to meet and greet and discuss her work. Hannah’s painting covers her many interests of flora and fauna of the Southern Appalachians. Through her work she invites the viewer to glimpse the extraordinary in what might be otherwise mundane.

We are excited to showcase the arts of our wonderful mountain community.

JIM CARSON AIS OPA

STUDIO / GALLERY

20-2 Main St., Saluda, NC

Jim is adding new Spring paintings to his gallery walls, as he replaces some of the winter and snow scenes with a Spring pallet. The painting here is an example. “Through the Fence” 11x14

But no matter the season, Jim continues to concentrate on the local landscape with paintings of Saluda’s charm in both his rural and city scenes.

However, there are some coastal paintings in the gallery now, including beach, boats, and marsh, which will eventually be going to his gallery in Charleston.

ALSO:

Jim is offering another small (6 student) workshop on Monday-Wednesday, April 22-24, in his Studio/Gallery, titled “All About Values”. You will often hear professional artists say, “While color gets all the credit, value does all the work”. We will try to get to the essence of that quote. This painting, “The Boat” 12x16, is a demonstration of finding the values prior to the color.

Plus, the small group fits comfortably in Jim’s studio/gallery, and provides more one on one teaching time. To sign up, go to “Workshops” at www.jimcarson.net, email jimcarson151@gmail.com, or call 828 7493702 or 828 8173376.

Jim’s Studio/Gallery hours are Fridays, 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Saturdays 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Sundays 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM and Mondays 11:00 AM- 5:00 PM. Tuesday-Thursday, by appointment or chance. Although Jim is often in the gallery on those days because he paints there.

“Spring Greens”

May 16-18, 2024

Ransom Road Studios

519 Ransom Road

& Saluda Surrounding Area

Saluda, NC

In Spring, these mountains rival Ireland in the number and amount of “greens”. The different hues blanket the scene with fresh avocado, emerald, lime, and jade shades that are close to unbelievable! The Spring foliage is a real awakening for the senses and the greens just beg to be captured on canvas. Daily, we will begin in the studio with demos and discussion, then continue the day painting “plein-air” at great sites where we will work to interpret these Spring colors in and around Saluda. We will be practicing “social distancing” which suits plein air painters perfectly!

On Wednesday, May 15th, we will have our “get acquainted (or reacquainted) get together” at our home and studio.

“Late Summer on the Blue Ridge”

8/15-8/17,2024

Cashiers, NC

Location: TBA

During “Late Summer on the Blue Ridge” we will be cool and comfortable in a studio. We will work from photo references that are used as a point of departure for your compositions. We will determine what to leave out or leave in to make good paintings and to make them your own. We will begin each day at 9AM with talks and demonstrations then paint till lunch. We will go “Dutch” to one of Cashier’s charming cafes then return to paint till about 3:30PM. This will leave you time to explore this spectacular area! On Wednesday evening, the 14th, we will have a “get acquainted party” for painters and their partner or friend.

“Fall on the Blue Ridge”

10/24-10/26, 2024

Ransom Road Studios

519 Ransom Road

& Saluda Surrounding Area

Saluda, NC

This is one of the most spectacular times of the year to be in the mountains of western North Carolina! We will learn how to work quickly and modify a broad vista into an exciting composition. Even devout studio painters will benefit from this change of pace! We will meet each morning in the studio then drive to our sites. We will paint until lunch which will be at one of Saluda’s fun cafes and then return to paint for the afternoon. Also, we will have our “get acquainted party” on Wednesday the 23rd at our home and studio.” This is our most popular time in the mountains so please register for the workshop and secure accommodations early!

All workshops are open to beginners to advanced with one-to-one instruction in your choice of oil, acrylic, or watercolor. A materials list is sent upon registration.

The Cutting Board

By Cappy Hall Rearick

It was such an ordinary thing.

The one item in her kitchen

I never thought was important.

I was so wrong.

Mama had left this world a week before and for the first time in days, I was alone. My brother had returned to Florida and I, being the only daughter, remained behind in our mother’s home to sort through what had been her life for seventy-four years.

I hugged and said tearful goodbyes to my family, then waved as their car disappeared for the long trip back to Sarasota. Then reluctantly, I went back into Mama’s house, tombstone quiet with everyone gone. I immediately realized the emotional importance of keeping busy. There was a lot to do and although my brother had helped, there was still much to get done.

My Southern Mama had saved every edition of Southern Living Magazine ever published. Either the magazines were special to her, or she was so used to them being there that they became fixtures. In any case, one quick decision on my part and they were history.

Wandering into the kitchen, my resolve faded like morning fog. Mama had been a sucker for gadgets. She had QVC on speed dial. Had Amazon Prime been available back then, she’d have been ecstatic.

I took a deep breath, plopped into a kitchen chair and put my head in my hands. Where to start? My first thought was a need to locate wine left from the funeral reception and my search paid off in the form of a forgettable generic cabernet. While one of my hands held a full glass of the red liquid, the other opened cabinets allowing me access to Mama’s kitchen tsunami.

Three hours later, seated cross-legged on the cold tile floor, surrounded by baked-on greasy cookware, I leaned my back against a cabinet and sighed. I should have started this project while my brother was still around to lug the heavy boxes to Goodwill or the dump.

I drained the glass of wine.

I made a sizable dent in clearing out unwanted stuff in the room that at one time had been the lifeblood of our family, but there was still so much to do. Glancing around, shadow memories of past celebrations over the years flooded my soul. I fished out a heart-shaped baking pan and could almost taste the red velvet cakes Mama always baked for my Valentine birthday. Good times. She loved to cook, never followed a recipe but always came up with unforgettable creations, most of which were never duplicated.

I pulled in a ragged breath and told myself if I didn’t stick to the job at hand, I would start bawling like the kid I no longer was. Reaching way back into a bottom cabinet, my hand rested on what felt like a board. I pulled it out and gasped.

It was Mama’s cutting board that was given to her, she said, just after she got married.

I gazed at the many indentions in the board and easily saw Mama in the kitchen pummeling a tough piece of round steak as if it were the anti-Christ. I saw her shake salt and pepper on the battered meat, then sift flour over it. I dug deeper in the cabinet and came up with her old metal flour sifter with the green handle. I remember it turning around and dusting flour on whatever Mama was making— country fried steak, fried chicken, pork chops. Biscuits.

I put the cutting board and the sifter on the floor next to me and allowed years of ordinary days and nights me back to life. I could almost taste the gravy Mama poured over the tenderized meat after she beat it into submission, and the mashed potatoes (never instant) she served with a meat meal. I remembered the green vegetables flavored with bacon drippings she forced me eat.

My fingers moved over the deep grooves in that cutting board and co-mingled with years of looking back on a life well-lived while my salty tears added flavor to my memories.

Musings Under the Moon returns!

Greg Bryant, co-founder of Third Saturday Productions and publisher of our So Saluda Newsletter, is announcing the return of Musings Under the Moon, (inspired by the amazing radio broadcast - Garrison Keillor’s, A Prairie Home Companion ) the wonderful variety show that entertained us last year, and will return the third Saturday of the month in June, July, and August.

The multi-talented Katrina Thissen, co-founder of Third Saturday Productions, and our dear friend and awesome talent Lyn Morton will join greg each month to entertain with Tales, Tunes, Truth and Trivia.

You may remember this same group presenting a similar series of shows during the lock down of the pandemic. Live Drive In Theatre was a series they performed so that families could all sit in their own cars and enjoy live entertainment at a time when very little was available.

If you have not seen these shows yet, make sure to join us this year, if you joined us before, we look forward to seeing you again!!

As always, please bring your own chair, and snacks if you like. Beverages will be available, Thank you Susan Cannon.

The June show will feature the Fabulous Hendersonville Yukulele Group (HUG) and the July show will welcome Steve Prickelmyer and numerous local friends in July.

For additional information contact greg at saludalifestyles@gmail.com

Saluda Living In Place (SLIP) is looking for volunteers!

At SLIP, we believe that aging should be a positive experience. We are committed to providing opportunities for seniors to connect with their communities, learn new skills, and engage in meaningful activities. Our programs are designed to support seniors in living independently and with dignity. We have a team of dedicated professionals who are passionate about serving seniors. Our services include neighbor to neighbor visits, transportation, home safety assessments, and more. We also offer educational programs on topics such as health and wellness, financial planning, and technology.

Would you consider joining our village in our mission to empower seniors to live their best lives?

Here are just a few of our volunteer opportunities:

Neighbor to Neighbor - Sometimes seniors feel lonely or isolated, or have difficulty accessing essential services. You could volunteer to visit on a regular basis to provide companionship and information. Sometimes just having a chat with someone who cares can make all the difference.

Transportation - Transportation is vital for seniors to access essential services, engage in social activities, and maintain a sense of freedom. However, as individuals age, various factors, such as limited mobility, health conditions, or the absence of a reliable support network, can make transportation challenging. Would you be open to providing transportation to someone in need?

Home Safety - We need experienced contractors or handymen to help determine what needs to be done to make senior homes safer and more accessible. Home Safety Assessments for the elderly include the exterior of the home, all entry areas, every room including bathrooms, bedrooms, laundry room, garage, basement, kitchen and dining room, lighting evaluation, fire safety and electrical safety. Depending on what needs to be done, SLIP may be able to provide free home repair services for aging adults. Would you consider using your skills to help a neighbor in need?

The Veteran's Breakfast - Every first Wednesday of the month we cook breakfast for the Veterans of Saluda at the Saluda Senior Center. The veterans that attend get to connect with old friends and make new ones. Having fun is an important part of living and numerous studies confirm the beneficial power of friendship and social activity. We all eat great and have a blast at the breakfast! If you would like to volunteer with the Veterans breakfast please reach out to Ashley Sandahl at ashley@lookingglassrealty.com

BE A VOLUNTEER! Remain a vital part of our community by offering time, talent and treasure. Being a volunteer has lots of benefits. It can bring meaning and purpose to your life, while increasing your self-esteem and wellbeing. Volunteering can also relieve stress, and alleviate symptoms of depression. As well as having a positive impact on your community, volunteering can improve your relationships.

Reach out to Cindy Hemenway by email at hemenway.cindy@gmail.com or phone at (828) 749-3024 if you would like to help enrich the lives of the aging adults in our community with SLIP.

(embracing spring)

Pearson’s Falls and Glen

Welcome!! April is the best month for wildflowers at Pearson’s Falls and Glen! April brings a succession of wildflowers known as ephemera. You will see Hepatica, Spring Beauty, Trout Lily, Foam flower, Jack-in-the-pulpit and many kinds of Trillium to name a few.

Come hike the quarter mile trail up along tumbling Colt Creek to the 90-foot waterfall.

Annual Meeting

Please mark your calendars from 5:30 to 7:30 on Wednesday, May 1st

and plan to attend and celebrate with us at the Saluda Center for the

17th Annual Meeting for the Saluda Community Land Trust.

Food and information will abound!!

Land Team

The Land Protection Team is an arm of Saluda Community Land Trust (SCLT) that sorts out the acquisition, stewardship (including monitoring) and overall management of SCLT owned land and easements held.  There are currently 17 active members.

The team meets the second Saturday of every month at the SCLT office at 9:00 am. We also go on "walkabouts" every Tuesday to explore the properties we own and to monitor the easements we hold. Anyone interested can meet us at the library parking lot at 10 am, weather dependent.

Reclamation Park

SCLT has many on-going conservation and preservation projects, some which are completed in a short period of time and some that may take years. This picture is an example of one of our projects that began way back in 2013 and is just now on the ‘hot burner’. SCLT now owns approximately 9 acres in the area owned by Saluda’s Black residents of the past. In this picture you see the only surviving Black residence, once owned by a man named Walter Parks who worked for the railroad. SCLT’s vision is to restore this house as a reminder of its history and create a park with walking trails throughout the entire neighborhood. The park will be named Reclamation Park: Restoring the history of the people who lived here in the past and contributed to our great little community.

Let us know if you’d like to be a part of this project.

SALUDA GARDEN CLUB’S NEXT BIG ADVENTURE

Mark your calendars now for Monday, April 15 (forget that tax thing) for an exciting trip to Campobello, SC to visit Betty Montgomery’s five-acre garden, Forty Oaks Farm

Ms. Montgomery’s philosophy is that nature is paramount to our well-being. And to that end, over years of trial and error, and traveling internationally to learn as much as she can, she opens her farm annually to visitors to share what she’s created.

She and her photographer husband Dick Montgomery, have created two gorgeous books:

A Four Season Southern Garden and

Hydrangeas: How to Grow, Cultivate and Enjoy.

If you would like more information on the Saluda Garden Club or how to join,

contact Susan Cannon at 937-623-1998.

Additional information will be sent to Garden Club members in April.

Happy Spring Planting!

DO NOT CALL PEST CONTROL!

Most pest control companies will exterminate baby animals. Call me and I will capture and deliver any baby animals to a wildlife rehabilitation center that I am connected with.

These animals are crucial to our environment. Skunks and opossums are beneficial to farmers, gardeners, and landowners because they feed on large numbers of insects and rodents. Opossums eat ticks, reducing the Lyme disease carrying tick population and eating nearly 95% of them that cross their path. They are resistant to snake venom and eat venomous species. Squirrels are natures gardeners. Raccoons feed on carrion, which assists in eliminating decomposing animal matter. Foxes control rodent populations. All of our local critters are crucial to maintaining a happy ecosystem.

Please call or text day or night, and I will assist you by catching and bringing these critters to the appropriate people for rehabilitation and then release to large, forested areas away from our neighborhoods. (828) 817-6515

Cedar Cliffs Purchased for Nature Preserve

Thanks to an outpouring of community support, Conserving Carolina has purchased 192 acres in Polk County for a new nature preserve. The planned preserve, called Cedar Cliffs at Twin Bridges, will connect two existing Conserving Carolina preserves—Melrose Falls and Norman Wilder Forest. The land also borders the proposed Saluda Grade Trail. Part of the land is located just across Highway 176 from the North Pacolet River, with headwater streams that flow into the river.

This property has been a top conservation priority for many years and the land trust had attempted to acquire it in the past, without success. An opportunity arose early this year to buy the land—but only if Conserving Carolina could raise $100,000 in donations quickly. Just days after Conserving Carolina announced this need, local donors met the fundraising goal—and kept on giving.

Executive director, Kieran Roe, says, “This level of generosity really speaks to how much people already treasure the protected lands in the North Pacolet River Gorge. If you’ve seen the wildflowers in Melrose Falls, or walked the trails in Norman Wilder Forest, or you’re looking forward to the Saluda Grade Trail, then you can understand what a momentous opportunity this is for conservation.”

So far, funding has come from Fred and Alice Stanback, the Polk County Community Foundation Bradley Fund, the Upstate Land Conservation Fund, and numerous gifts from generous local donors. Conserving Carolina has also applied for a key grant from the North Carolina Land and Water Fund.

The Cedar Cliffs property includes two separate sections, one on either side of Conserving Carolina’s Melrose Falls Preserve (also called Twin Bridges). The northern section includes 162 forested acres on Buck Mountain, with rare plants, rich biodiversity, and eight headwater streams. This section also touches Conserving Carolina’s Norman Wilder Forest, home to popular hiking trails.

The southern section of Cedar Cliffs includes 30 acres with a long boundary along the proposed Saluda Grade Trail. This means that a section of the rail trail could have nature preserves on both sides—Melrose Falls and Cedar Cliffs. Cedar Cliffs offers a potential access point for the Saluda Grade Trail.

The Cedar Cliffs preserve will add to two growing conservation corridors. One corridor runs east-west along the North Pacolet River. The other runs north-south across mountains to link two vast protected areas, the Green River Game Lands and Mountain Bridge Wilderness. Corridors like this allow animals to migrate freely and can help plants and wildlife shift their range in response to climate change.

In addition, making this land a nature preserve improves opportunities to fight kudzu along Highway 176, especially with the leadership of Conserving Carolina’s Kudzu Warriors volunteers.

“This is such a special part of the mountains, with so much beauty and biodiversity,” Roe says. “By protecting another wonderful nature preserve here, we’re moving toward a landscape-level vision for conservation.”

Conserving Carolina is a local land trust that has helped protect almost 49,000 acres, including farmland, forests, rivers, wetlands, parks, and trails. The mission of Conserving Carolina is to protect, restore, and inspire appreciation of the natural world. Learn more and become a member at conservingcarolina.org.

The Saluda Visitor's Center

Did You Know?

That a very popular place to hike and see a beautiful waterfall is Melrose Falls near the Twin Bridges on Hwy 176. Nothing new there, eh. Most people in Saluda know about that, but did you know that recently Conserving Carolina purchased 192 acres in Polk County for a new nature preserve called Cedar Cliffs at Twin Bridges that will connect Melrose Falls and Norman Wilder Forest. 30 acres of the newly purchased land will border the proposed Saluda Grade Trail.

Stop by the Visitor Center to find more about our mountains, local history and upcoming area events. Many activities are posted in the Visitor Center. If you have events or activities that you would like to post in the Visitor Center, please send them or email them to Lynn Casey at caseysaluda@gmail.com.

Also, merchants, please remember to send your brochures, business cards and other business information to the Visitor Center for us to display and handout to tourists.

The Visitor Center will continue regular opening hours 11:00-3:00 five days each week excluding Tuesday and Wednesday. This operating schedule will continue until the end of April.

The Visitor Center, located at 20 W. Main Street, has a nice open room with information about Saluda and the surrounding area and two ADA-compliant restrooms. The Center features a slideshow created by the Saluda Historical Society that highlights Saluda’s history.

The center is run by an all-volunteer staff and all operating expenses are split equally between the Saluda Downtown Foundation, Saluda Business Association, and the Saluda Tourism Development Authority.

Additionally, we’d like to invite visitors and residents alike to visit the Center to learn about Saluda’s Historic walks or scenic drives, get hiking trail maps and area maps. We also have a “Things to do in Saluda” list, restaurant menus, lodging choices and a variety of business pamphlets. We continue to put out a call for more volunteers for short shifts to provide information and keep the facility in shape. The shifts are easy and fun, you meet nice people, and you will be properly trained before starting. Please consider volunteering or just drop by during hours to say hello!

Just Released! Latest Oral History Interview Upload

Walter “Jerry” Summey

Though we had previously released a snippet from this interview conducted in 2021, this is the first time we have shared it in its entirety. Jerry proved to be one of our favorite characters. He spent several hours speaking with members of the Historic Saluda Committee and shared many tales about his life growing up in Saluda, including stories that have been passed down to him. We have broken this interview down into chapters due to its length. To access individual chapters, use the links found on our YouTube channel. www.youtube.com/@HistoricSaludaNC

Jerry was born in 1944 in Charleston, SC to Walter Dewitt Summey and Frances Arkansas Case Summey, who were serving their country during WWII. Though born in SC, Jerry and his family moved back to Saluda after the war and have very deep roots in Saluda's history. The Summey and Case families have been in Saluda for many generations.

A special thank you goes out to Jerry's niece, Janet Clayton for setting up this interview and for sharing family pictures. Her father, Bobby Campbell, Jerry's brother-in-law, and Jay Summey, Jerry's brother, are also featured in these photographs. We also appreciate the assistance of Jerry's wife, Lola Summey, for her role in this interview.

In the realm of non-profit initiatives, funding often stands as a key hurdle to overcome. The Saluda Pop-Up Pantry relies on grants to fund many of our most impactful programs. That’s why we’re grateful to be recent recipients of a $1500 grant from the Work With Heart Charitable Giving Program. Work With Heart is an unrestricted grant program administered by the Community Foundation of Henderson County. The Work with Heart Charitable Giving Program is a collaboration of six businesses in Henderson County. Since its inception in 2015, the program has awarded over $280,000 to 50 local nonprofits.

Receiving a grant from a local organization represents more than just monetary assistance; it symbolizes validation, support, and belief in the vision of those who receive it. The Saluda Pantry will use these funds to continue the mission of reducing food insecurity in our community.

Bijou's Quest For Love

My name is Bijou, let me tell you about my journey so far. From the moment I entered this world, I knew my purpose was to spread joy wherever I went.

I'm a natural-born charmer, you see. Kids, and grown-ups, I love with every fiber of my being. There's something magical about the way their faces light up when I greet them with a wag of my tail and a big, goofy smile plastered on my face.

But the real magic happens when I'm with humans. Oh, how my heart sings when I'm by their side, soaking up every ounce of their love and affection. Whether it's cuddling or going on an adventure together, I'm happiest when I'm with them.

One of my favorite things in the world is treats. Oh, the joy of sitting patiently, tapping my feet in anticipation as I wait for my reward! And when they finally give in and hand me that tasty morsel, I can't help but break into a little dance of gratitude. It's my way of saying, 'Thank you for loving me.'

Despite being just a year and a half old, I've learned a thing or two about life. I've discovered that while I may not have the energy of a puppy anymore, my heart is just as full of love as ever. I enjoy the occasional hike and daily leisurely walks, but what I crave most is the warmth of a loving lap to curl up in.

I'll be honest, life is sad sometimes because I still have not found a family to call my own, but I know they are out there somewhere and that they will find me soon! I can't wait to share my love with my new family without cats, wherever they may be.

I've got all my vaccinations, I'm house trained, and I'm neutered. I'm not a fan of cats, and some dogs I can be picky about, like small ones that look like cats, lol. I think I might be good with other nice dogs my size though, because I used to have a best doggy friend before. He was about my size and we played so good together!

Please come meet me, I’m located at Foothills Humane Society, 989 Little Mountain Road, Columbus, NC. 828-863-4444. You can fill out an application at the shelter or online at https://foothillshumanesociety.org/adopt/adoption-application.

Saluda Business Association March Meeting

The Saluda Business Association recently held its monthly meeting, covering important topics that impact local businesses. Key items discussed included:

Rails to Trail Project

Representatives from the Saluda Grade Trail organization provided an insightful update on the proposed Rails to Trail project. This visionary plan aims to transform the former railroad line into a multi-use trail, seamlessly connecting Saluda to other existing trails in the region. The project promises to bolster economic prosperity, increase property values, and attract a vibrant influx of younger residents and visitors to our cherished town. Notably, the town of Saluda has already committed a substantial $350,000 towards the development of McCreery Park, an integral component of the trail system in Saluda.

Fort Creek Community Concerns

Kirk Hall from Orchard Lake Campground raised concerns about the unlicensed and unsecured men's rehabilitation facility in the Fort Creek community. While not opposed to such facilities in general, there are concerns about the appropriateness of the location near family-oriented businesses and residential areas. A recent court ruling has sent the zoning permit back for reevaluation. He emphasized the importance of community input and support in preserving the character and safety of our neighborhoods.

Marketing and Events

The SBA delved into ongoing marketing endeavors, including search engine optimization strategies and encouraging businesses to contribute compelling content for the Saluda website. SBA members are encouraged to capitalize on this opportunity to aid in drawing more visitors to our digital platform, thereby enhancing the visibility of Saluda's dynamic business landscape. Upcoming events, such as the highly anticipated Saluda Arts Festival on May 18th, were also highlighted.

As we continue to navigate the complexities of local business development, community projects, and strategic marketing, we extend an invitation to all Saluda businesses or interested parties: Join us in these crucial conversations. Your insights, expertise, and enthusiasm are the lifeblood of the Saluda Business Association. Together, we can shape a future that reflects our shared values of sustainability, community, and growth. If you are interested in joining you can email membership@saluda.com or visit www.saluda.com and the signup information is at the bottom of the page. The SBA meets the first Tuesday of every month at 5:30 in the visitor center.

Gather the family or a few neighbors and head over to the Saluda Senior Center on Tuesday April 9th and 23 to feast on a plateful of springtime freshness. Meals are served from 5:30 to 7pm—they’re always free and donations are gratefully accepted!

Embrace the joy and goodness of April with good food, good conversation, and good music the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of this month with your place at the SCT! Everyone is welcome, and we’d love to have you join us! Like spring, we’re “green” so please bring your own plate, utensils, & cup/glass.

Do you love to cook? Share your skills at an upcoming Saluda Community Table supper! Volunteering to cook for one of our dinners is a fun and fulfilling way for organizations, families, coworkers, or friends to get together and do some good. Cooking teams are usually 2 to 6 people and SCT volunteers will guide you through the whole process! Don’t cook? You might consider providing a meal from your favorite restaurant—it makes things easy for you and supports the local economy!

WHAT AN INCREDIBLE DINNER!

Rave reviews are still coming in on the food and wine at the March 14 Italian dinner at the Orchard Inn. Marc and Marianne Blazar are such amazing supporters of Saluda and our local nonprofits. The evening was magical with fabulous food and wonderful wines. The Mountain Page Players added festive entertainment with their Italian songs. Sister City received a check for $1,080 to support projects with the children and cultural activities in Saluda. Orchard Inn has another charitable event on April 25 for the Saluda Historic Depot…. a fun dinner recreating a Southern Railroad dining experience. Highly recommended!!

HELP ENTERTAIN OUR ITALIAN STUDENT VISITORS

We are three months away from the arrival of Nora and Marta from Abruzzo. Our two Italian students will be staying with four local families, all of whom have children in the same age range. The visit will also expose our local children to the opportunities of travel abroad. After their time in Saluda, the girls will go to be with Judy Ward in Hickory and on to her family’s compound at Lake Norman. While they are here in Saluda between July 10 and 26, we are asking Saluda residents to help us provide meaningful and exciting activities for these two seventeen-year-old girls. Nora and Marta are typical teenagers who enjoy outdoor activities as well as entertainment and even shopping. Our area is rich in natural areas and offers many possibilities for fun and fellowship in Saluda. Our goal is to introduce them to Saluda, our traditions and way of life, which is very different from what they experience in Italy, and to provide a safe and enjoyable experience. Please consider providing an activity in one of the following categories:

Outdoor/Adventure: Hiking on area trails, exploring the Blue Ridge Parkway, a picnic, tubing on the Green River, a day at Lake Lure/Chimney Rock, or Dupont Forest, or one of your favorite places.

Arts and Entertainment: Saluda Train Tales, an evening concert, a tour of Biltmore, sampling local food, art galleries, a movie, Carl Sandburg home, theater performance, craft activity, a visit to a college campus, game night in a local home; give them a lesson in your area of art;

Shopping: Area stores, an outlet mall, our Saluda shops and those in Hendersonville and Tryon, and they have even asked to go to our grocery store.

Educational Opportunity: Invite the girls to give a talk to your club or group or join you on an outing.

Our visitors will be in Saluda from July 10 to July 26. To volunteer for an activity please contact Pam Gray at pmgray7@rsnet.org, or 828-749-3006. Your participation will be a wonderful gift to our visitors and create great learning experiences for them. Thanks to Amy Weymer who has volunteered to host them at Lake Summit for a cookout and a swim, and to Rav Smith who will arrange a glider flight for them. Who else will help?

THE STREET SIGNS ARE COMING

Jaine Nelson, our newest Board member, is working to make our Sister City signs a reality. We anticipate one at each end of town. They have been developed by the amazing Ashley Sandahl at Looking Glass Realty, signed off on by Steve Orr, our City Manager, and the required DOT approval is in process. Next, they go to our City Commission for permission to install.  Because we did not want to pay for signage using funds, we have raised for our cultural activities with the Saluda Elementary children and Saludians, Clark, Pam and Jonathan Thompson stepped up and provided restricted funds to pay for both signs.

OUR SALUDA KIDS ARE LEARNING ITALIAN

Saluda Elementary School Teacher Stephanie Fletcher is monitoring the usage and impact of the Italian language program at Saluda Elementary which began in early 2024. Each child in second through fifth grade has their own computerized language program. Students access the program weekly with individual logins at school when they have their regular assignments completed. At the end of the year, teachers will choose students who have excelled for special recognition and prizes.  To introduce the new language, first grade is watching videos and playing games as a whole class after recess. Ms. Fletcher’s first graders have learned to count to ten, their colors, to say hello, names of animals and a few foods. Questo è fantastico!

We know that learning another language is one of the most effective and practical ways to increase intelligence and keep your mind sharp. It is particularly good at helping older adults retain maximum brain function. But, in young children, the developing brain is greatly enhanced by bilingualism or the study of a second language. It improves the brain’s executive function, helps with ignoring distractions to stay focused, switching attention willfully from one thing to another and holding information in mind. Studies have shown that bilingual children learn faster and easier and have improved problem solving skills and creativity.

Railroad Dinner at the Orchard Inn

Unlike many of the old inns of its time, the Orchard Inn was not originally open to the public. Built by the Brotherhood of Clerks for Southern Railway in 1926, the simple farmhouse-style lodging was created as a summer getaway for railroad employees and their families. Today, the Orchard Inn is a premier 5-star restaurant and Inn.

In conjunction with the Saluda Historic Depot and Museum, the Orchard Inn and Newman’s Restaurant will host a Depot fundraiser dinner on April 25th. The cost is $150 per person and only 65 tickets will be sold. For more information and to make reservations, please visit our website saludahistoricdepot, choose the events tab and select Historic Dining Car Dinner. There you can select your menu choice and use PayPal to pay for the event. If you have questions, please email Helene Pasternak at Hpast@bellsouth.net.

Saluda Historic Depot’s April Train Tales Features Special Guest Speaker Pearlie Mae Suber Harris

Pearlie Mae Suber Harris, daughter of a Baptist minister, will be the featured guest speaker of the Saluda Historic Depot’s April Train Tales.

Amid racial segregation, Harris moved with her family to Saluda in 1940 and grew up near the railroad tracks. During this time, the Saluda Depot had a Black and a White waiting room. Segregation, as in most of the South, was prevalent. Mrs. Harris describes life in the town of Saluda well before the passage of the landmark Civil Rights Act of 1964. Education, although rare for young Black women in the 40’s and 50’s, was a powerful theme throughout Pearlie Mae’s life. She graduated high school in 1953 and left Saluda to find work in Greenville. At that time, she was given the opportunity by Mrs. Simpson (of the Belks-Simpson department store chain) to attend Barber-Scotia College. Pearlie would go on to become a beloved teacher in the community for the next 39 years. She earned her Masters degree from Furman University, where she also later receive an honorary doctorate. In 2020, Pearlie was also honored as the subject of a large-scale mural in downtown Greenville, celebrating diversity and education. (see picture below)

Join us at the Saluda Historic Depot on April 19 at 7:00 PM to hear Pearlie Mae Suber Harris share her story about “The Sounds of Growing Up Along the Saluda Grade.”

Dave O’Brien is Guest Speaker at Tryon Kiwanis

Saluda Historic Depot Board Member, Dave O’Brien, spoke at the Tryon Kiwanis Club on the history of the Saluda Grade at their March meeting.

With the plan to create a Saluda Grade Trail, the history of the Grade should not be lost. SHD Board Members are seeking opportunities to share that history with the community. Civic groups, church groups and schools are invited to participate by scheduling tours at the Depot or hosting one of our volunteers as guest speakers. If interested, please contact Nita High at nitahigh@rsnet.org

Spring into River Dog Run!

April comes from the verb “aperire” which means “to open.” It is the time in Saluda when most porches open up for the spring season too, which for many expands our living space by half! Porches are almost a necessity in Saluda as we have raised porch-sitting to an art form here. At River Dog Run we are prepared to help open your porch with a new flair!

Our pillows say it all and are perfect as head or back rests for comfortable chairs or swings. “Life is Better on the Porch” is a true statement and “Love you to the mountains and back” are both porch worthy! We have odes to the lakes surrounding us too with lake outlines and their latitude and longitude coordinates.

If you have a covered porch and need outdoor lighting, we have rustic chandeliers and lamps that can give your porch a warm glow. The handmade chandeliers are statement pieces that are made locally. Our “one of a kind” lamps with chenille shades are perfect for outdoors. We have a lot of “single ladies” (single lamps) that are calling for a side table on a porch.

To make your porches smell delicious we have four flavors of candles. Fittingly for April we have Saluda Sweet Pea (April birth flower is a either a daisy or Sweet Pea) in a glass container or tin or our new stone “vessels” which are refillable. Green River Currant, Mountain Magnolia, Carolina Pine, and Blackberry Trails and Grapefruit round out our selections. And all candles come with custom River Dog Run matches because very few places off matches anymore!

Serving adult beverages is part of the porch scene in Saluda so we have towels stating, “Drinks well with others” and “I’m outdoorsy in that I like drinking on porches” for some light humor. And they are useful too! Our new favorite towel is “That’s a horrible idea: What time?”

Towels and candles also make wonderful hostess gifts if you are visiting a porch in Saluda or elsewhere!

By the way, April is one of four months that has 30 days! See below for the other months if you are interested!

In honor of Spring and increased crowds we are open every day except Wednesdays! Hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday 11-5 and Sunday from noon until 4PM. If you have questions or need to come at other hours, please call 828-551-1461.

Spoiler: April, June, September and November all have 30 days!

Spring is upon us and our awesome deck that overlooks the entrance to Main Street is ready to allow dining in the sunshine. Come for lunch or dinner five days a week during April, or just visit for a cocktail and relax. We just ask you to wear a shirt and shoes and no smoking on the deck so everyone can enjoy the beauty of the great outdoors and fresh mountain air.

Retail & Shoe Departments: Retail for spring and summer is arriving almost daily and we have revamped our retail section to be located primarily upstairs! We already have warm weather merchandise that includes shorts in house from some of our best quality brands like Elan for women, Howler Brothers for men, and Prana and Kuhl for both men and women. In our unique shoe shop—the only shoe shop in town--we are stocking the latest styles in Astral, known for their river shoes, as well as the popular Chaco and Keen shoes and sandals for everyone.

We have Pelagic for those who love fly fishing, as well as other fishing supplies. We’ve stocked new Croakies eyeglass straps to go along with a great supply of polarized Suncloud and Gnarcissist sunglasses for active outdoorsy types. We also get a lot of requests for hiking poles and have stocked some lightweight hiking and trekking poles and walking sticks from Black Diamond. They are great for heading out on our area’s mountainous trails.

Loved by kids and adults alike are our Fahlo animal tracking bracelets that allow you to track a real animal and help protect their environment. And now we have added Fahlo Expedition or Venture plush animals. Each Fahlo purchase gives back to help protect the Earth’s most vulnerable species.

Free Live Music: If you love having dinner with some great live music in the background or enjoying a night on the town with that special someone, join us at Saluda Outfitters and Green River Eddy’s Tap Room & Grill. We work hard to find the best talent in WNC and the Upstate, while also featuring some folks with Nashville recording connections. From rock to bluegrass, you’ll find a wide variety of free live music on our indoor and outdoor stages (depending on the weather). So, check out our monthly music list elsewhere in this publication or visit us online and add our event dates to your calendar.

The Grill Menu: Our chefs have been experimenting with some new menu ideas and are locking in their favorites. You really must come try the new Reuben sandwich, beef birria tacos with hot dipping sauce or our pulled pork sandwich that comes with a homemade Cheerwine BBQ sauce on a Hawaiian roll with pickles and fresh coleslaw. All our food is prepared from scratch fresh daily. Our chefs roast our own meats for hours to capture the best flavors, whether it is pork, brisket or our special wings.

Specialty Cocktails: If you love experimenting with specialty cocktails, you’ve got to try our Main Street Mudslide made with Jameson Whiskey and our Pearson Falls Mule made with Captain’s Spiced Rum. We now have a list of a dozen drinks named with our local hotspots in mind like our Eddy’s Old Fashioned with Bulleit Rye, a Saluda Sunset with Hornito’s Tequila, or a Henderson County Appletini with Absolut Vodka. Come check out the tap room that features 16 taps of locally brewed craft beers that vary depending on the season. If you are a wine lover, we offer that as well. You can take your drink and shop in our upstairs retail area, head downstairs to play a game of pool or hit the deck on a sunny day or warm evening.

The Orchard Inn & Newman's Restaurant & Spa

April heralds the blooming of beautiful multi-colored azaleas which adorn the walkways of our lovely property along with a mix of tulips and late season daffodils.

As you ascend the winding driveway to our 12-acre elegant mountain oasis, restaurant and spa, framed with beautiful spring plants, the stress of normal day to day life immediately starts to drift away. The official welcome committee (our female Boxer, Roxy) will be standing by to challenge you with a stick and walk you up the steps to our antebellum front porch where she will attempt to lure you into a game of tug of war. Don't be tempted - you're sure to lose. Welcome to the Orchard Inn & Spa and Newman's Restaurant where the temperature is cool, the atmosphere is serene and the hospitality warm. Come help us celebrate 98 years of gracious southern living.

Our fine dining restaurant, Newman's, continues to receive high accolades from food critics far and wide. Voted by Our State Magazine as one of the top 14 "must experience restaurants" in North Carolina. We serve dinner every Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights starting at 5:30 pm, and an incredible Brunch every Sunday beginning at 11:30 am. At Newman's Restaurant we strive to bring diners a true "farm to table" gastronomic experience. Treat yourself to a most creatively prepared and delicious fine dining culinary adventure! You don't have to be a guest of the Inn to enjoy a meal at Newman's. Our amazing 3-course brunch is only $45 and goes from 11:30-1:30 every Sunday. Our 4-course dinners are a great value at $95. Every seat in the elegant dining room and outdoor dining terrace has a fabulous view of the surrounding mountains, and the fire table on our lower terrace is a perfect place to enjoy a cocktail, glass of wine or local beer prior to dinner. It's hard to find a better meal in the great culinary towns of Asheville, Greenville or Charleston. We are literally a diamond in the woods. Call 828-749-5471 now to book a table this weekend. Now serving awesome cocktails and mixed beverages for your enjoyment!

On ThursdayApril 11th we'll be hosting a special Titanic Dinner to commemorate the fateful maiden voyage of the most famous cruise ship in history. We'll be replicating four of the many courses served the night the ship went down and our favorite professional actor, Steve Carlisle, will be recounting each of the five day's activities along with interesting factoids between each course. He will play the part of the Managing Director of White Star Cruise Lines which managed the vessel. The evening will not only be a memorable culinary event but also promises to be most entertaining. Price is $99 per person and reservations are required. Seating begins at 6:30 inside our dining room as well as outside on our new dining terrace. Come dressed in your 1914 finest and enjoy the party.

We'll also be serving a special dinner on Thursday, April 25th as a fundraiser for the Historic Saluda Depot & Museum. The menu replicates that served on an actual 1928 Pullman Dining Car. World renowned railroad expert Raymond "Bo" Brown will delight us with tales of dining experiences and other factoids between courses.

There is still limited seating available for Mother's Day Brunch. Call today to reserve a table and show Mom how much you care. The food, atmosphere, views and service can not be duplicated anywhere else in the area.

Our Spa is open, and all are welcome. We've created a very zen-like environment where you can de-stress, unwind, relax and be pampered with an array of therapeutic massages or restorative facials by highly skilled therapists. We are also offering local discounts, so come by and check us out! The Koi fish are waiting to greet you. It's a perfect place to have a girl's afternoon off and sit by the fire while sipping a glass of wine after a heavenly treatment. Local discounts are available.

We look forward to greeting you soon!
