Meet Your Neighbors

Saluda Salutations

We're delighted to introduce you to our newest neighbors, the Monson family! While they call Charlotte home full-time, Ben, Katie, and their three fantastic children have recently purchased 91 Greenville Street as a second home, and we couldn't be happier to welcome them to Saluda!

Originally from Greenville, Katie has been spending time in Saluda since childhood, and Ben has spent many weekends in the area over the past decade in outdoor pursuits. The Monson kids add an extra splash of energy to our town. There's Jude, their youngest, eight, who you’ll see ripping around town on a bike or paddling on the lower Green. Anna, 14, is in the third form (9th grade) at The Asheville School where she enjoys kayaking and mountaineering. And let's not forget Magnus, a junior at Providence Day and Class V kayaker who is fired up about being able to paddle the Narrows whenever he wants.

As lovers of the outdoors, the Monsons have already fallen in love with Saluda. They plan to make the most of their second home, spending summers and escaping to our charming town on weekends throughout the year.

Please join Beverly-Hanks/Allen Tate, Realtors® in extending a warm Saluda welcome to the Monson family! We look forward to creating

cherished memories together in our beautiful town.

Happy New Year!

William Jameson

Hello to the New Year! It is always good to get a fresh start and we do every 365 days! This is the time of year to do something for yourself and of course that includes taking up or re-taking up painting. My workshops are good for beginners to experienced painters; there is something for everyone so don’t be intimidated! Here are the selections thru the Spring!

“Working Large without Fear”

Ransom Road Studio

519 Ransom Road

Saluda, NC

March 14-16, 2024

We will begin our journey with a “Get Acquainted” party at the home and studio on Wednesday, March 13th. Each day will start with a serving of conversation about technique over coffee, tea and pastries. We will break for lunch (“Dutch”) at one of Saluda’s delightful cafes and return to the studio for an afternoon of painting. You will

leave your “comfort zone” for three days and work larger than usual, identifying and conquering the compositional problems so often encountered when moving to a large format. Learn to be spontaneous in the beginning, creative in the middle and analytical in finishing your large works. By the end, you will understand how to solve problems specific to large scale paintings. We will have six hours of painting and demonstrations daily.

“Spring Greens”

Ransom Road Studios

519 Ransom Road

& Saluda Surrounding Area

Saluda, NC

May 16-18, 2024

In Spring, these mountains rival Ireland in the number and amount of “greens”. The different hues blanket the scene with fresh avocado, emerald, lime, and jade shades that are close to unbelievable! The Spring foliage is a real awakening for the senses and the greens just beg to be captured on canvas. Daily, we will begin in the studio with demos and discussion, then continue the day painting “plein-air” at great sites where we will work to interpret these Spring colors in and around Saluda. We will be practicing “social distancing” which suits plein air painters perfectly!

On Wednesday, May 15th, we will have our “get acquainted (or reacquainted) get together” at our home and studio.

Thank you for a great 2023!

It was a fulfilling and exciting year with abundant community and connection. Over 150 students took part in classes, many of them added to stretch skills and creativity. We initiated Musings Under the Moon in the summer months with the direction of Greg Bryant. Singers, ukulele players, guitars and stories filled the courtyard with sound and laughter under the moon. Let’s do more in ’24!

The Gallery and Studio will be closed from January to mid-March with classes starting in April. I’ll be taking a rest, cleaning, and organizing the studio and developing some new work for 2024.  Should you want to visit the Gallery please call for an appointment 937 623 1998 during the off months. Check Facebook and Instagram for updates in February and March.

Thank you for all your interest and support! The Moon exists because of you!

Ready When You Are, C.B.

By Cappy Hall Rearick

“Give me any two pages of the Bible and I’ll give you a picture.” ~ Cecil B. DeMille

I love to watch the movie, It’s a Wonderful Life. I especially love it when Clarence hears a bell and gets his wings; I love it when George goes all Norman Bates and scares Mary into the middle of Valentine’s Day. I totally have to watch that film during Christmas.

I am a self-proclaimed, sappy holiday movie nut. Miracle on 34th Street? Kris Kringle is my hero. And it wouldn’t be Christmas if Ralphie didn’t get a Red Ryder BB Gun and then have everybody tell him, “You’ll shoot your eye out!”

My mother took me to see A Tree Grows in Brooklyn one December when I was little. “Remember this movie,” she said. “It’s not just about Christmas. It’s about having a dream.”

Another one I love (although it’s not exclusively a Christmas movie) is Mayerling, the film portrayal of a royal Austrian love affair gone tragically awry. I watch it every December. One year I even went to Austria during the holidays.

Arriving in cold Vienna five days before Christmas, I bundled up and still shivered while wandering the city. I enjoyed performances of Swan Lake, The Nutcracker and then went to the venerable Hotel Sacher for a slice of true Vienna, the Sachertorte. I’m talking about serious chocolate.

The pleasant hours leading up to “C” Day were full of enjoyable activities, but I had nothing planned for the Eve of Christmas or “C” Day itself. Traditionally, Austrian merchants, innkeepers and hoteliers remain home with family on holidays. Only skeleton crews are left behind to look after tourists like me.

On December 24th, I was roaming around the empty hotel lobby and leafing through area booklets when a brochure caught my attention: Vienna Woods Christmas Eve Dinner and Midnight Mass at Mayerling.

“Mayerling?” Sighing, I pushed the brochure toward the sole hotel desk clerk. “Omar Sharif and Catherine Deneuve,” I gushed. “The movie? So tragic and romantic … so...”

The clerk raised his eyebrows and sniffed. “Bitte?”

I shoved the brochure under his nose. “Mayerling,” I repeated more assertively. “Ya?”

In perfect English, he told me that there was one seat left on the four o’clock bus to Mayerling. Would I like to buy the ticket?

I grinned like an idiot. “Ya! Ya! Mayerling. Boy oh boy!”

The noisy old bus was packed with more nationalities than a NATO Summit. We bumped along and eventually arrived at a quaint restaurant steeped in old world charm as if Heidi (Shirley Temple) had decorated it herself. After a traditional Austrian Christmas Eve dinner of fried carp, roast goose, baked celery root and marzipan, we re-boarded the bus and rode to the bottom of a steep hill in the Vienna Woods.

It was almost midnight when our guide doled out lighted “torches” with instructions for us to walk single-file up the hill to the chapel. The penitential convent, she said, had been the hunting lodge where Crown Prince Rudolf (Omar Sharif) and his mistress, Baroness Mary Vetsera (Catherine Deneuve) sealed their fate in a murder/suicide pact.

“The altar,” she added, “stands on the spot where their bodies were discovered.” A chorus of expected “oohs” and “aahs” followed.

I had hiked almost to the top before I felt the first snowflake. Turning around, what I saw behind me snatched away what was left of my breath. Flickering, hand-held torches meandered up the hill and illuminated the dark woods. The only sounds I could hear were icy footstep crunches and the purr of falling snow. C. B. DeMille could not have staged it better.

At that moment, all the romantic illusions about a tragic love affair left my conscious mind. Gone was my narrow vision of Omar and Catherine, no longer there to cloud my perception of that hallowed scene. Those twisting midnight torches formed a picture on my soul as though it was an indestructible strip of celluloid. Eat your heart out, C.B.

I cherish the vision of that quiet group of people ambling up a hill in the dark to honor a little child born to bring us love, peace and hope.

Someday I’ll take that journey again. No, my soul pictures have not faded, nor will they. But until I return to Mayerling, I will enjoy the Christmas lights that twinkle up and down Saluda streets for they will help me retain the memory of Mayerling at midnight.

Supplements: I hear a lot about “aptogens.” What are they, and do I need them?

NEED? NO. But adaptogens—herbs and other plants that have anti-stress benefits—have been shown to improve sleep and boost cognitive function, says Chris D’Adamo, director of the Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

“These substances aid in your body’s ability to adapt to stressors,” he says. Still, talk to your doctor about any potential interactions between medications you’re on and these supplements.

Examples of adaptogens include ashwagandha, rhodiola rosea, maca, chaga and holy basil—not exactly dietary staples. D’Adamo cautions: “Taking an adaptogen is not a

replacement for core lifestyle habits.” —JM

Sugar: I’ve used sugar substitutes in my coffee for years, but there’s been a lot of confusing news about them recently. Are sugar substitutes healthier than sugar or not?

It’s true that there’s been some less-than-sweet news about sweeteners lately. Studies have linked the no- and low-calorie options to everything from heart attacks to gastrointestinal issues. In July, the World Health Organization named the artificial sweetener aspartame a possible cause of cancer.

The Food and Drug Administration, which approved aspartame in the ’70s, maintains that it and others like it are safe, so long as you’re not overdoing them. (According to the FDA, a person can consume 75 packets of aspartame each day and still be within the safe limits.)

So, what’s one to do? There’s no doubt that cutting down on the amount of sugar you consume can be a boon for your health. But that doesn’t mean simply swapping sweeteners for sugar, says Dariush Mozaffarian, M.D., a cardiologist and professor of nutrition at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science at Tufts University.

The real goal should be to wean yourself off sweet foods and drinks altogether. Think of sweeteners more as a bridge to better health, rather than as a destination. “If you’re going to have a 20-ounce soda, it’s probably better to have a diet [soda]. But, you know, better to

have neither,” Mozaffarian says. —RN

Community News

Recently at the American Legion, Comrade Larry Vaughan displayed a Purple Heart given to him by the US Coast Guard, in recognition of his Uncle Louis Franklin Vaughan for his sacrifice aboard USS Tampa, a Coast Guard Cutter that served in WW1.

USS TAMPA, a Coast Guard cutter and crew serving under the Navy Department was lost with all hands after being torpedoed by a German U-boat off Wales on September 26, 1918. This tragic loss occurred just weeks before the end of World War I. It was the single largest loss suffered by the Coast Guard during that conflict.

News from

The Saluda Visitor's Center

Did You Know?

We have two event kiosks in town. One is located between the Historic Depot and the Saluda Library and the other is located between Town Hall and the Purple Onion. Upcoming events are posted in these two locations.

Please note: The Visitor Center will be closed December 31 through January 11, reopening Friday, January 12. Winter hours will be 11:00 am until 3:00 pm Thursday through Monday—closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. We will keep these winter hours through March.

Even though this is a sleepy time of year in Saluda, there are many activities going on. These activities are posted in the Visitor Center. If you have events or activities that you would like to post in the Visitor Center, please send them or email them to Lynn Casey at caseysaluda@gmail.com

The Visitor Center, located at 20 W. Main Street, has a nice open room with information about Saluda and the surrounding area and two ADA-compliant restrooms. The Center features a slideshow created by the Saluda Historical Society that highlights Saluda’s history.

The center is run by an all-volunteer staff and all operating expenses are split equally between the Saluda Downtown Foundation, Saluda Business Association, and the Saluda Tourism Development Authority.

We continue to put out a call for more volunteers for short shifts to provide information and keep the facility in shape. The shifts are easy and fun, you meet nice people, and you will be properly trained before starting. Please consider volunteering or just drop by during hours to say hello!

If you are interested in volunteering or learning more about the Visitor Center please contact Lynn Casey at caseysaluda@gmail.com.

Happy New Year Saluda! The Saluda Pop-Up Pantry would like to start 2024 on a note of deep gratitude. Thanks to all of our dedicated, faithful volunteers who keep the Pantry running week after week. In 2023 Saluda Pantry volunteers logged over 3500 hours in service to this community.

Volunteering at a small food pantry is a powerful way to make a tangible impact on the lives of those facing food insecurity. In these tight-knit spaces, your efforts reverberate through the community, providing crucial support to neighbors in need. Every smile shared contributes to a network of compassion that transcends the pantry's shelves. Small food pantries often operate on limited resources, making volunteers the lifeblood of their existence. Your time and dedication can bridge the gap between hunger and hope. By volunteering, you become an essential part of a collective effort to build a stronger, more resilient community. It's not just about distributing food; it's about fostering connections, erasing stigma, and reminding everyone that, in the face of adversity, kindness can be the most nourishing gift of all.

And speaking of exceptional volunteers, thanks to all of the 26 bakers who donated over 125 DOZEN HOMEMADE COOKIES for our shoppers to enjoy over the holidays! And to the special elves who helped package them into individual, festive bags to distribute at the Pantry. We’re awed by the abundant generosity demonstrated by the Saluda community.

If you’d like to join us and be a part of what we do,

please email me at kpelz@saludapantry.com

There are several ways to volunteer including food pick-ups,

pantry helpers, task group participants and other opportunities.

Saluda Fifth Graders Hear About Italy

Claire Thompson visited Ms. Brandi Drake’s fifth grade class and told students about her month in Italy this past summer as Sister City’s student delegate. Ms. Drake reported that her students were fascinated by her adventures and she was impressed with their manners. Students asked Claire questions about the parts of her travels she enjoyed the most, whether she was nervous to travel alone, and how she learned to speak Italian so quickly. Several students said they hope to follow in her footsteps one day!

If you are Scottish…

Join Asheville Sister Cities at their annual Robert Burns Night Supper. It’s Thursday January 25 at Biltmore Double Tree Hotel in Asheville. There will be kilts galore and tartans too; bagpipes and swords; three-course dinner with haggis, neeps and tatties; Irish dance performance; traditional Burns night ceremony; and the co-host is NPR’s own Fiona Ritchie. It is great fun even if you are not Scottish! Tickets are available on the Asheville Sister Cities Website at https://ashevillesistercities.org/event/2024-robert-burns-night-supper/.

DinoLingo for Second through Fifth Grades

Thanks to a successful grant application submitted by Ms. Stephanie Fletcher, Saluda Elementary received $1,000 from Rutherford EMC to fund Italian language instruction for students at Saluda Elementary. The program was intended for all students in second through fifth grades, but the grant was not quite enough to cover every child. Sister City paid for the additional 21 second graders so all may participate in this language program. Watch the next edition for details from Ms. Stephanie Fletcher about the impact this program is expected to have on students’ cognitive development.

Claire’s Visit to Carunchio Highlights Needs

Claire Thompson gave a stirring presentation to the community at the Saluda Center about her time in Italy as Saluda’s Sister City delegate. Her diverse experiences included observing a truffle hunt and learning how the truffle dogs are trained to find truffles and many days of fun interactions with teenagers in Carunchio. She reported that almost none of the children she met speak English. That was a surprise since we understood that the school taught English. But in provinces like Abruzzo and isolated villages like Carunchio, the language instruction is far from adequate. The school receives one two-hour block of instruction per week to cover all six grades. Claire reported that she and her new Italian friends would point to an object, and each say its name in their native tongue to teach the other the meaning of the word. Unfortunately, in Italy, English language proficiency is a requirement for higher education. Italian Universities have specific tests at various levels that must be passed to demonstrate proficiency in English. The more desirable the university, the higher the language requirements. This report from Claire echoed the findings of our two Saluda teachers who visited in April., 2023. The limited English language instruction the Carunchio students receive is not adequate and has not resulted in any appreciable gains in English language learning. The fact that the teenagers Claire met were also not able to speak English, highlighted the depth of the problem. Sister City is working with Massimo Criscio in Carunchio and others to develop a summer English language immersion program to jump-start the students in the Carunchio elementary school and possibly also include the high school students who live in Carunchio. Watch for more on this effort in the coming months.

This photograph was taken on Church Street beside the current city hall building. The identities of the people are unknown with the exception of Marion Gordon, also known as the fiddle maker, who is wearing the hat on the right. The pebble dash building, seen in the background, features a method of exterior finishing popular in the first part of the 20th century where pebbles are mixed with mortar for a textured surface. Whew! It’s over! As much as we enjoy the holidays, they can be exhausting! January is for slowing down and resting on your laurels. It is also a time to take stock of what you didn’t get for Christmas and fill in the blanks.

And you can do that at River Dog Run! If you are in need of a smile, we can provide that with a pillow or a tea towel. Our most popular pillow is “I love you more today than yesterday. Yesterday, you really got on my nerves.” Or “Mountains are the cathedral where I practice my religion” is another one that evokes chuckles. As for teas towels, “I think my ‘check liver’ light might come on this weekend” or “In dog beers, I’ve only had one” never fails to elicit laughs. We think anything that makes you smile is good!

Want your home to smell divine? We have a new candle scent “Cabin Green” that is a balsam fir that is reminiscent of warm fires, hot toddies and relief from the cold. It calls for a snuggly throw and a good book. We have our regular blissful scents like Green River Currant and Blackberry Trails and Grapefruit and Saluda Sweet Pea and for you to choose from too!

If you need new lighting, we have pairs of lamps and also what we call “single ladies” that are one-of-a-kind unique lights. From short to tall, from silk to chenille shades we can find something for you.

For baking, we have Muddy Llama’s very functional pottery. Apple pie for two and brie dishes are two of our most popular. Also, mugs for oatmeal or soup are very popular this time of year. Just picture yourself with the fir aroma from a candle mingling with a slice of apple pie, all while relaxing in front of the fire!

River Dog Run is the place for original artwork that has been carefully curated by our owner. We also have vintage works that come from her shopping excursions throughout the country. To keep your feet your feet warm we have a large selection of rugs from all over the world. From small to large, we can keep your toes toasty!

If you need cards for “thank you’s” we have a great selection of letterpress and hand painted humming bird prints. We also have some funny ones to tickle the recipient’s funny bones.

So come shop for yourself! We offer a relaxing environment, helpful staff and unhurried browsing!

Our winter hours are:

Thursday through Saturday, 11AM to 5PM

Sunday from noon to 4PM.

We are located at 46 E Main Street.

For questions or a private showing, please call 828-531-1461.

Happy New Year! Stop by Wildflour for piping hot coffee, seasonal soups, fresh bread, and most importantly, a cozy place to gather with loved ones.

To accommodate the winter season, Wildflour will be closed on Mondays during January and February.

We are open Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 8 to 2, Sunday from 9 to 2 and Wednesday and Friday nights from 5 to 8.

The Community Supported Bakery will continue in February; these weekly family-style meals including a main dish, side dish, dessert and a pantry item! Sign up sheets for the February Community Supported Bakery (CSB) are now available online and at the bakery. We are so excited for everything this new year has in store, and we look forward to seeing you this January!

My Wonderful Dogs!

My companions on this glorious journey.

Kaya (on the right) was adopted from Foothills in August 2019, she will be 6 years old next month. My heart.

Please consider rescuing or adopting, if you decide to bring an animal into your family.

Foothills Humane Society

LO (on the left) was dumped here in Saluda in 2020 and found her way to us. She is our unstoppable tank, running full speed into every blessed day. She turned 4 years old on November 1st!

We have so much to learn from these amazing animals. And, all the other amazing animals.

There is a great group of dogs and companions who meet on Sunday mornings at 10:00am, at the Saluda Dog Park. Come join the pups and some people too.

So Saluda Newsletter

Dear Fabulous Readers,

Every week as I volunteer at our Visitors Center, I get to meet people, just wandering through, folks who come for the shops, food or outdoor fun and people looking to move here. It is always such fun to learn about what draws people to Saluda and signing up new readers!

So many people are drawn here. What a joy to share with them. If you are a resident, a visitor or a sometimes resident we welcome your readership!

This newsletter is a creation of love. Its sole purpose is to celebrate and shine a light on all the wonder that is Saluda.

Thank you for reading.

Drop me a line and let me know what you think.
