Last Day of School for Students

Transportation Procedures - Safety First

Structured Arrival / Dismissal Procedures:

Please use the following link to access our schools structured morning drop off & afternoon arrival procedures.

Smith Elementary Arrival / Dismissal Procedures

N. Liberty Street-Morning Drop Off Procedures:

All students dropped off in a car should be dropped off on N. Liberty Street. There are two options for your drop off.

1.    Drop off your student on the sidewalk in front of Smith School (traveling South on N. Liberty Street).

-There will be a drop off zone in front of the school signified by cones.

- Drivers should not get out of their car to open doors for their child.

-Students should only exit the right side of the car onto the sidewalk. For safety purposes, we do not want students exiting into the middle of N. Liberty Street.

-There will be no parking in this line. In order to keep the line moving, we are asking those cars that need to get an item (project, instrument, etc.) out of the trunk to use Option 2.

-If you arrive early, we ask that you not park in the line, as many students still need to be dropped off.

2.    Park on N. Liberty Street (traveling South) between Pennsylvania and Heffner.

-This option should be utilized when you need to get an item out of your trunk or you need to assist your student.

-All students who exit on the westbound side of  N. Liberty Street will be required to walk to the crosswalk at Liberty and Heffner to cross the street.

-There is a crossing guard on duty at the corner of N. Liberty Street and Heffner at 8:10a.m.

After exiting the car, students will walk to their designated line up in front of the school off Liberty Street.

Heffner Street-Morning Drop Off Procedures:

Students in 4th and 5th grades will line up at the lobby doors on Heffner Street.

Bus students:

Buses will drop off students on Heffner Street. A staff member will be on duty to assist K-3 students to lineup at the SACC doors and 4-5 students at the lobby doors.

All students will enter the school at 8:20 a.m. In case of inclement weather, students will line up inside the school building.

N. Liberty Street-Afternoon Pick up Procedures:

We appreciate your patience and understanding at dismissal time. Please know that safety is our first concern at all times. Please refrain from congregating on school grounds.

Drivers should not get out of their car to open doors for their child.

-Students should only enter the right side of the vehicle from the sidewalk. For safety purposes, we do not want students going into the middle of N. Liberty Street to enter the vehicle.

-There will be no parking in this line. In order to keep the line moving.

-If you arrive early, we ask that you not park in the line, as many students still need to be picked up.

Heffner Street-Afternoon Pick up Procedures:

Smith Bus zone is located on Heffner Street, and this is also a no parking, stopping or standing zone.

Changes in your child's normal dismissal routine:

At all times, we work to ensure the safety of our students. If there is a change in your child's dismissal routine on a given day, please send a written note to the office or contact the school office at (740) 833-1350 prior to 12:00 p.m. If there is no contact with the school regarding the change (i.e.: no note or phone call), your child will follow their normal dismissal routine.

Student Sign Out Notifications:

Please be sure to contact the front office when coordinating an early pick up of your child. With increased clinic visits, we want to be sure to have minimal student congregations in the office to avoid germ transfers. We appreciate your understanding & cooperation, and will do our best to have your child down to the office in a timely manner.

Please have ID when signing out students / dropping off items.

Attendance Reporting System

Delaware City Schools utilizes an automated student absence reporting system called Safe Arrival. This system reduces the time it takes to verify student attendance making it easier for you to report your child’s absence and easier for staff to respond to unexplained student absences.

Safe Arrival allows parents to report their child’s absence quickly and conveniently in several ways:

  • Parents can log into a website, go.schoolmessenger.com to access a Safe Arrival Parent Portal where an account can be set up to report absences. The email used to set up the account must match the email you gave to the school.

  • Parents can call into an automated interactive telephone system via a toll free number (1-844-817-5313) through which absences can be reported.

  • If you have an Android or Apple device, you can also download the School Messenger app. You can go to the Google Play store or the Apple App and search using the keyword "School Messenger". Download the app with the blue swirl logo.

Visit this link on the Delaware City Schools website for more information. Please do not call the school directly to report an absence unless there is an emergency with your student. Please report any absences no later than 8:30-9:30 am. If you do not report your child's absence, you will receive a phone call from the school office to verify your student's absence.

Building Communication Working on finalizing!

As we embark on a new school year,  Smith Elementary is starting new practices based on Delaware City Schools policies with school to home communication.  Family members and Smith staff are strongly encouraged to use district sanctioned & supported communication forums, such as: district email, phone calls to the building, messaging through Canvas, PowerSchool, as well as communication means through Google Suites.

To help support this practice, we ask families to refrain from contacting Smith teachers and staff members through personal text messaging, social media accounts, or other non-district applications.  We know that while convenient, the use of personal messaging and social media accounts has proven difficult to maintain documentation for public records, as well as safety of student information.  We look forward to working with all families this year. If you have any questions or need to establish a communication plan for your child, please feel free to reach out to your teacher or building principal.

Online Forms

The online form portal is now open. The back to school forms can be completed by logging in to your PowerSchool parent portal. Select the "Forms" link and click on the first form. Please remember to complete each form in its entirety before clicking submit to move on to the next form. Forms should take less than 10 minutes per student. Forms need to be completed by September 8th.

If you need assistance logging in to your account, please call the office at (740) 833-1350.

Mumkin order pick up will be Thursday, September 26th from 4pm-6pm in the Smith parking lot.  We are still very much in need for parent volunteers to help with organizing and distribution (especially from 1:30-3:30pm) if you are available to help, please sign up through the following link: Mumkins Parent Volunteer Sign Up
