Students missing 10% or more of school days are considered chronically absent, which research links to lower reading proficiency by third grade, middle school struggles, and a higher risk of not graduating. National POW/MIA Recognition at

Kane County Veterans Memorial

Local veterans and families of unreturned service members will gather at the Kane County Veterans Memorial (719 S. Batavia Ave, Geneva) at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, to honor the sacrifices made by the nation's prisoners of war and those still missing and unaccounted for from past conflicts. The ceremony is part of the observance of National POW/MIA Recognition Day.

Kane County Probation Officer of the Year

Kane County juvenile probation officer Isabel Ocon has been honored with the 2024 Probation Officer of the Year Award. Ocon, who has served the County for 19 years, received the recognition during a recent Kane County Board Judicial/Public Service meeting. READ MORE

Aurora Street Named for Longtime Educator

Aurora's longest-serving teacher, Laura Waegner, was honored with a street renaming. A portion of Kensington Place is now "Laura Waegner Way." Waegner, who retired in May, taught in Aurora for 55 years.

Elgin Alumnus Named Fulbright Scholar

Elgin High School alumnus Roshan Betkeruright from Elgin is one of eight University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign students to receive a Fulbright grant. He will use the grant to research dementia-care models in the Netherlands. READ MORE
