Forest Preserve Safety Alerts and Tips
It takes less than a minute to break a car window, unlock the door, and remove items left inside. Often there are no witnesses to these offenses because of the ease and speed.
These are crimes of opportunity and can be prevented with a little foresight and planning.

  • Keep vehicle windows closed and doors locked at all times.
  • Activate your car alarm.
  • Always remove your ignition keys.
  • Never leave your vehicle running.
  • Before entering your vehicle, scan the surrounding area, and always check the interior and the floor and rear seat areas.
  • Prior to arriving at your destination, lock valuables in the trunk or glove box, hide them completely out of sight, or take them with you. A wallet or purse hidden under a newspaper or floor mat does not fool a criminal.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Don’t broadcast your movements when hiding valuables.
  • Larcenies are crimes of opportunity. When property is left unlocked or in plain view, it invites trouble.

You can assist our Lake County Forest Preserves Police Department by reporting suspicious persons, vehicles, or activities immediately at 847-549-5200.
Lake County Sheriff's Vacation House Watch
The Lake County Sheriff's Office offers a "Vacation House Watch" for residents of their patrol areas. In Fremont Township, that would be the unincorporated areas. If you are planning to go out of town and would like to take advantage of this program, please call their Dispatch Center a few hours prior to leaving. The calltaker will ask you a series of questions, including emergency contact information. 847-549-5200.

If you live within village limits, please call your local police department.
Com Ed Scam
ComEd has seen an increase in reports of individuals calling ComEd customers and falsely claiming their electric service will be disconnected unless payment is made. These impersonators instruct customers to buy a prepaid credit card and call back to a different phone number with the personal identification number (PIN) or other personal information. They also use a tactic called “spoofing” to manipulate the Caller ID displayed phone number so that it appears as a ComEd number.

ComEd representatives will never call you to ask you for cash or request that you purchase a prepaid credit card to make a payment on your bill.

In the past some ComEd scammers have asked for immediate payment with a charge card. Whichever tactic is used, DON'T FALL FOR IT!

Don't let the threat of a power interruption in cold weather make you vulnerable. If you have concerns about the status of your account, call ComEd’s Customer Service line at 1-800-334-7661(1-800-EDISON1).
