Note From Skyline Village Chicago Board
Dear Members and Friends of Skyline Village Chicago
Happy Older Americans Month 2024
As we celebrate Older Americans Month in May, we align with the Administration for Community Living's theme for 2024: ' Powered by Connection '. This theme underscores the significant role that meaningful relationships and social connections play in our health and well-being.
At Skyline Village Chicago, we understand connectedness's vital role in supporting independence and aging-in-place by combating isolation and loneliness. We aim to promote the benefits of connecting with others by:
- We are sharing facts about social connection's mental, physical, and emotional health benefits and how it contributes to overall well-being.
- Providing speakers, luncheons, and social and cultural events, including in-person and online group conversations that help older adults engage and connect with others.
Let us know what interests you and how we can help you connect. Please tell us how you move through the community and connect with others. We're always looking for new ideas! Email us at svcchgo@gmail.com.
Speaking of connections, Skyline Village Chicago recently hosted Nancy Stevenson in a pre-book talk about her latest adventure: writing. Nancy encourages us all to write what we know and write what we don’t know—just write! On the brink of her 90th birthday, Nancy models how writing keeps aging minds agile through nagging curiosity that leads to researching what we don’t know or what we’ve forgotten. She connects to others through her "Nancy Presents" chats about writing. Thank you, Nancy!
Watch for Nancy Srevenson’s book release in mid-July. No, she hasn’t written anecdotes about her life campaigning for her late husband, Adlai Stevenson. She’s written a barn-burning mystery novel, Long Reach. Her motto is, "It's never too late."

and
Craig Trompeter, Artistic Director

If you never loved opera before, you'll be won over by Craig Trompeter and Chase Hopkins's enthusiastic fondness for the music, the instruments, and their performers. Since its founding in 2010, Haymarket Opera has offered more than 30 productions using period instruments and historically informed staging conventions, shining a spotlight on many lesser-known but quality pieces by a wide diversity of composers, sung and played by a combination of international stars and top regional talent. The company has received glowing reviews including in the Chicago Tribune, Italy’s L’Opera, Opera News, and Early Music America. The New York Times praised Haymarket’s “finely played, carefully sung, lovingly detailed period performance.”
Haymarket takes its name from both Chicago’s Haymarket Affair of 1886, which gave focus to the worldwide labor movement, and from the King’s Theatre in the Haymarket District of London, where Handel produced his Italian operas.
Learn about how these versatile artists began in the back of a Chicago saloon and their meteoric rise to fame.

April’s Lost Penny Lunch featured Ali Medina, Health and Aging Organizer for Health & Medicine Policy Research Group. Ali introduced us to Illinois Aging Together, a grass roots Campaign for Illinois to develop a state-wide strategic plan for aging. Our aging population is growing at a faster rate than at any other time in history. To achieve Aging Equity, enabling all of us to thrive in Illinois as we grow older, we need a multi-sector plan that engages all state departments and municipalities across Illinois in working together to achieve this goal. See the fact sheet that Ali distributed, and support the Campaign. Go to www.IllinoisAgingTogether.org to sign on as an individual, or as an organization
