A message from our Pastor and Teacher

Sunday, June 30 ~ Sixth Sunday after Pentecost ~ "The Jesus Map"

I met a traveling man at church one day – for the time he was around, before he hit the road again, he was an active part of the church I served. He was a thoughtful sort who contemplated his road in life and how to get where God wanted him to go. One day he showed me a project he had been working on called The Jesus Map. What map do you follow in your life's journey, as an individual, as a congregation? Do we need to know where we are going to get where we are called to go?

Sunday's Scripture

Luke 3: 2-6; 10-22

The Summer Series NEEDS YOU!

After having put out a couple of announcements we have had very few who have offered to help with the planning, set up, clean up and facilitation of the 2024 Summer series. We know that many people travel during the summer and lives are busy, kids are home etc., and we also know that people like to see the summer series on the calendar each year and come to one, some or all of the sessions.

We would love to provide you with a summer series for 2024; however, due to our own travel and family commitments, we will sadly not be able to do that unless we can get volunteers to help with the planning, facilitating, presenting, set up and cleanup of the event each week. We have the dates of July 20th, 27th, August 3rd, and 10th from 10 a.m.-noon set aside for the series. If you are able to help with any part of the series, please contact AL_education@redlandsucc.org as soon as possible. Unfortunately, if we don't get enough people to help, we will not be able to hold the Summer Series this year.

Interim

In the interim following the interim

Pastor Elaine’s last day with us is June 30 and Pastor Joe’s first day on the job is July 8. For the brief period in between, we have arranged for Pastor Sarah Averette-Phillips from Live Oak (Brea) UCC to cover any pastoral needs that arise. Sarah is well-known to many in RUCC, as she grew up in this congregation, and claims Barbie and Loring Fiske-Phillips as her parents.

Sarah can be reached via email at pastor@breaucc.org or via phone/text at 909-709-5919.

Our shepherd groups are also available for support, of course, as they always are. If you don’t know which shepherd group you’re part of, please contact Shepherd Area Leader Maegan Hill at maegan@redlandsucc.org, and she’ll help you get connected.

- Dan Abushanab, President

Please note: The office will be closed until Joe’s arrival on July 8 as Veronica takes a much-deserved vacation.

Elaine's last day is this Sunday

We have a special occasion this Sunday at RUCC—it's Pastor Elaine's last day with us. Please join us after the service in Covenant Hall to enjoy some cake and to thank her for her service to our church family. Let's wish her well as she embarks on the next chapter of her life and calling as the settled pastor at Christian Church of Pacific Grove.

Eagle Scout Project in the Garden

My Name is Joey and I've been going to RUCC for many years and decided to do my Eagle Project in the Church's community garden. The goal of the project is to get it functional again, with less weeds, clear pathways and prepared plots. My first two workdays will be on July 1st and 3rd from 5 to 8pm. Feel free to attend if you are able and bring gardening equipment such as rakes and gloves as we will be weeding primarily. If you are unable to make it and still wish to help, it's no problem as I'm sure there will be a few more workdays in the future. Please contact me if you have any questions, hope to see you there!

Caring for Kin for June - Youth Hope

THIS SUNDAY, JUNE 30, IS THE LAST DAY TO CONTRIBUTE TO YOUTH HOPE!

Youth Hope recently put out a call for groceries on social media. Let's help restock their pantry shelves with items such as cereal, granola bars, canned goods, macaroni and cheese, crackers, and peanut butter and jelly!

RUCC Kids and Youth Family Bowling Trip

Kids and Youth (and their families) are invited to Empire Bowl in Redlands for a fun afternoon of Bowling June 30 from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m.!

There's a bumper lane for bowlers 10 years and younger.

RSVP to admorics@redlandsucc.org — let us know how many bowlers will be in your party. (Parents are invited to come but we won’t make you bowl unless you want to!)

Next Book Group Meeting is July 7

The RUCC Book Group's next meeting is Sunday, July 7, at noon in Founders Room. The book is Gods of Jade and Shadow by Silvia Moreno Garcia and the presenter is Charletta Campfield.

Two-Week study—Abortion in Historic and Biblical Context—to begin July 11 at RUCC

Please join us for two sessions in person or online: Thursdays, July 11 and July 18, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. We will begin each session by watching a 30-minute video lecture from Westar Institute, followed by discussion, as we reflect on the various ancient precedents which are presented in each lecture.

Week 1: “In Context: Woman and Body in the Ancient World”

Week 2: “Immortal Soul and Abortion”

Racial Justice reflection of the week

Derek Black, whose dad is the notorious Ku Klux Klan leader Don Black, was once the poster child of the white nationalist movement in America. Now, they’ve abandoned their family’s beliefs, come out as transgender and recently released a book called The Klansman’s Son.

The memoir tells the complex story of their journey from white nationalism to antiracism and how one’s upbringing doesn’t have to define their ideology.

From the Environmental Justice Team

You’re looking out at the mountains, and the air seems a little murky. Should you go for that walk? Should you even open your windows? Is there any way to tell how bad (or good) the air in your neighborhood is now? The South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) is here (https://www.aqmd.gov/home) to help. With pages devoted to everything from information about air pollution, its health effects, and how these effects are described by the Air Quality Index (https://www.aqmd.gov/home/air-quality) to maps showing the current Air Quality Index in your neighborhood (https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/6a6a058a177440fdac6be881d41d4c2c/) to historical data (https://www.aqmd.gov/home/air-quality/historical-air-quality-data), the South Coast AQMD website can help you answer a host of questions about your local air quality, as well as what the AQMD is doing to try to improve it. And if you want to your local air quality represented in a nifty dial-style graphic or check the air quality at sites outside the South Coast AQMD region, try the federal government’s AirNow website (https://www.airnow.gov/).
