Pierre-Marie Chermette
Domaine du Vissoux

 |
"Regularly
at the highest level for several vintages, this is an exemplary
domaine. Pierre-Marie Chermette has practically no equal; his
wines are so far above the rest that there is no comparison. His
efforts in the vines over the last five or six years has yielded
such dividends that henceforth we hope the whole profession
follows."
- Revue du Vin de France 2010
Classement-Les Meilleurs Vins de France, p. 350
Two Stars out of three; one of only three domaines in Beaujolais so
rated, and the ONLY domaine of this ranking that produces AOC
Beaujolais (the rest are rated for their crus). Chignard, Lapierre,
Thivin, Terres Dores, are rated one star.
Moreover, Domaine du Vissoux is the reference for Beaujolais in
virtually all of the top bar-a-vin in Paris, the top cavistes in
France, and even Michelin-star restaurants. In short, it is the
best.
While we anxiously await the lauded 2009 vintage, you can satisfy
your palate with the terrific 2008 vintage at a great price. We
have limited quantities and are offering them at 20% off the

Simone
Scaletta's Classic Piedmont Reds
Saturday Tasting and Sale
|
"The
youthful Simone Scaletta is
making his first marks in the wine world with some admirably
distinctive offerings." Gambero
Rosso.
Located in the lower section of Monforte, which has beautiful
views, the vines are young and he does all the work in the vineyard
and cellar himself. He uses only 600 litre and older barrique for
aging and no filtering.
The beauty of the hills of Monforte, his passion for wine, the
warmth of the Langhe region and the feeling that he could live in
harmony with the rhythm of winemaking contributed to Simon
Scaletta's decision to restore an abandoned vineyard where it had
already existed, respecting the surrounding woods and the balance
of nature.
Research, respect and acceptance of the values of a territory
which is strongly connected to the delicate rhythms of both nature
and people not only were the leading principles of his personal
choice, but also define the style of Simone Scaletta's wines. The
position of the land, the climate and hard work give each single
wine its unique character. There are five hectares in total. This
small dimension gives Scaletta the opportunity to dedicate great
attention and care to each stage of the vine's life. Pruning,
staking and wiring, the process of thinning, the special selection
of grapes are all done in total respect of natural cycles and are
based on a technical knowledge aimed at the production of the
highest quality wines.
Join us on Saturday, September
11th from 12PM - 4PMfor what promises to be an excellent

New
Releases - Yannick Amirault's Reference Point Loire Valley Reds:
Bourgueil and St.-Nicolas de Bourgueil
|
The
villages of Bourgueil and neighboring St.-Nicolas de Bourgueil lay
just west of Tours almost in the center of the Loire Valley. Here
the grape for the red wines is Cabernet Franc grown on limestone
vineyards some two kilometers north of the Loire River. At their
best, the wines produced in these appellations give, if not the
literal structure of Bordeaux, much of the charm, but their own
individual character. And 100 years ago, were considered much the
equal of Bordeaux. But times and fashions change. However, the
quality of Yannick Amirault's wines speaks for itself. Great
quality, very flavorful and attractive wines.
"In the last ten years, the wines of this Yannick Amirault's
Pavillon du Grand Clos, have appeared as the most complex and the
most consistent of the appellations Bourgueil and St. Nicholas de
Bourgueil. The wines of the domaine are characterized by body,
cleaness, charm and in a great vintage, by aristocracy....
Amirault's wines have a maturity of tannins that is rare. When the
vintage accentuates this search for maturity, certain cuves swing
towards opulence, but still serve as a reference for the finesse des matieres." - Le Classement, Revue du Vin de
France

The Lineup:
Yannick Amirault Bourgueil
"La Coudraye" 2008, Regular Price $21.99/bottle - "Solid,

Points, Wine Spectator.
Yannick Amirault St.-Nicolas de
Bourgueil "La Mine" 2008, Regular Price $25.99/bottle -
"Fresh and racy, with alluring black tea and olive notes weaving

finish lets a tobacco edge linger nicely. Drink now through 2011.
-JM" - Rated 90 Points, Wine
Spectator.
Yannick Amirault Bourgueil "Le
Grand Clos" 2007, Regular Price $27.99/bottle - "Still
fresh, despite the mature hints of tea and cedar around the edges.
A lively core of mulled red and black cherry fruit is backed by
tobacco and olive hints, with a lovely, perfume- and mineral-filled
finish. Drink now. -JM" - Rated 90
Points, Wine Spectator.
Yannick Amirault St.-Nicolas de
Bourgueil "Les Malgagnes" 2008, Regular Price $31.99/bottle
- "Lively, with open-knit blackberry, blueberry and cherry
fruit, laced with sweet tapenade and spice notes. A bouncy edge on
the finish lets the gorgeous, pure fruit play out without losing
focus, while a tobacco edge chimes in for added depth. Drink now
through 2012. -JM" - Rated 91
Points, Wine Spectator.
Yannick Amirault Bourgueil "La
Petite Cave" 2007, Regular Price $35.99/bottle - "This racy
red is a chalky spine driving the black cherry and black currant
fruit, all backed by liberal tobacco and bittersweet cocoa notes.
Grippy but fresh on the lengthy finish. Rock-solid. Drink now
through 2012." - Rated 91 Points,
Wine Spectator.

Introducing
two stellar Rhone-style releases from Fausse Piste Winery
|
Celebrating the Rhone in a different
kind of way, newcomer, Jesse Skiles of Fausse Piste
Winery
 |
While
Peter Weygandt is best known for his selection of top European
estates, when the opportunity arose to work with a truly special
Oregon winemaker, Jesse Skiles of newcomer Fausse Piste Winery,
Peter didn't hesitate. Fausse Piste produces minute quantities of
stellar Rhone-style reds and whites from small, well-placed
vineyards in the Yakima Valley and Walla Walla areas of Washignton
State, and Amaranth Ridge in Oregon. Fausse Piste's wines are an
excellent complement to our top-notch French Rhone Valley wines,
and are amazing values to boot.
Fausse Piste Syrah Pour L'Amour
de Dieu 2008. A "Blend" between two vineyards: 25% Syrah
from my block at Outlook (a dry rocky site in the Yakima Valley)
and 75% from Amaranth Vineyard (Located in the Umpqua Valley AVA; a
unique site is nestled in the west end of the Cascade foothills at
680 feet above sea level). Constant breezes from the west, slightly
warmer days than the Willamette Valley but cooler nights due to
elevation provide a unique site for a very different showing of
Syrah than vineyards in the north. 2008 provided an almost perfect
growing season in both AVA's. A long summer with warm days and cool
nights and blue sky 'til late October. Fausse Piste's first Syrah
release consists of fruit that was hand picked, sorted, and
fermented in small lots using delicate manual punchdowns and
fermented using yeasts isolated from the Rhone Valley, then lightly
pressed into neutral French oak from small coopers where after
finishing Malolactic fermentation it rested for 11 months at 55
degrees before being bottled unfined and lightly filtered using a
plate and frame. A Syrah that's sure to be KILLER! 96 cases
produced. $21.99/bottle.
Fausse Piste Viognier Dcouvertes
2009. From the Outlook Vineyard located in the Rattlesnake
Hills sub AVA of the Yakima Valley in Washington State. At the
Edge of the foothills at 900 to 1100 feet above sea level and a
South East aspect, Outlook lies above the richer deeper soils
caused by the Missoula floods. Basaltic rock with windblown loess
are the main soils found in the vineyard. Planted first in 1982,
and the Viognier block planted in 1989, Outlook Vineyard is managed
by Roger Davis for Owen Roe Winery. In 2009, the Yakima Valley had
one of the warmest vintages in quite some time. A perfect spring
rolled in to unusually hot summer, which was lucky, given an early
frost across much of the state on October 11th. The heat seemed to
have less impact on Rhone Varietals as on wines based on Bordeaux
varietals. Harvested on September 14th at 25.8 Brix with unusually
high acid and a ph of 3.6 the Viognier was ripe, but also
well-balanced due to low yields of 2.4 tons per acre. Handpicked
then chilled at the winery overnight following hand-sorting, and
then pressed whole cluster over a long and delicate press run.
Settled overnight in tank then fermented in equal parts neutral
French oak, stainless steel 75 gallon drums and a concrete "egg"
from Numblot in France, using a combination of native yeasts and
yeasts isolated from the Rhone Valley. After weekly battonage and a
long cool fermentation the wine was not allowed to undergo
Malolactic fermentation. Lightly fined and filtered and bottled on
March 19th 2010, then released May 1st 2010. 163 cases produced.
$21.99/bottle.
As a footnote: Fausse
Piste's showing at the 2009 Hospice du Rhone event was reported on
by Gang of Pour, who had
the following to say: "Perhaps the most unforgettable example of
Viognier comes from newbie Fausse Piste; both new to the event and
new winemaker from Oregon. If ever a wine expresses the purity of
Viognier fruit, the '08 C'est la Viognier, Outlook Vineyard Find
this wine in Yakima Valley does. Fermented one half in barrel and
one half in tank, the wine retains a lively crispness, while
showing white peach, lemon grass, anise and cream flavors. If this
is not the finest Viognier of the show, it is certainly in the top
five."
