Kitsap Humane Society Unsung Hero
Voting Now - April 18, 2022
For the last eleven years, many of us have known Dr. Jennifer “Dr. Jen” Stonequist, KHS Director of Shelter Medicine, as a hero to thousands of pets in need throughout our community. Kitsap Humane Society has gained national attention thanks to Dr. Jen’s lifesaving work. Her extraordinary story has been recognized by Petco Love and Victoria Stilwell, internationally renowned dog trainer and star of the hit series It’s Me or the Dog, and Dr. Jen has been named one of their five 2022 Unsung Heroes honorees.

KHS needs YOUR help! Today through April 18, you can help KHS earn $25,000 by voting Dr. Jen as the ultimate unsung hero!

Dr. Jen, whose compassion for animals and people is contagious, has helped transform Kitsap Humane Society into a beloved non-profit known for its high-lifesaving rate. She's saved the lives of countless pets in the Kitsap community and in Mulegé, Mexico during yearly “spay-cations.” Dr. Jen was crucial in altering an antiquated law through her advocacy in Olympia, which now allows shelters to treat pets from low-income families, keeping them together. Trained in mindfulness, she also provides mentorship and compassion fatigue training to veterinary professionals across the U.S.

Marketing 2: Pricing Your Product or
Service to Sell & Get Online
Wednesday, April 13, 2022, 1:00 pm
You’ve developed a wonderful new product or service but how should you price it? In Part 2 of our Marketing workshop series, we start by reviewing different distributions strategies and help you choose the method that best gets your product or service in front of your customers.  The rest of the workshop is focused on pricing and we will cover some pricing basics. Then we review a detailed process to determine how you can determine the price of your product. Since pricing a service is very different than a product, we have a special section the covers the separate process for pricing your services.

Getting your business online is a requirement these days so we spend the last portion of the workshop reviewing the high-level steps to getting an effective website and then take a quick look at email marketing, social media and selling online.

Workshop Fee: $50

Rising Retail Theft: Here's What
Business Owners Need to Know
From the U.S. Chamber of Commerce

Fill me in: Communities and businesses large and small across the United States are facing a significant increase in retail theft and organized retail crime that requires the swift response of policymakers.

Why does this matter? Twenty-five percent of small businesses report raising prices as a result of shoplifting. Some retailers have been forced to shutter locations in response to rampant theft.

Numbers to know:
  • 54% – A recent survey of small business owners found that a majority (54%) experienced an increase in shoplifting in 2021.
  • $700K – Organized retail crime cost stores an average of over $700,000 per $1 billion in sales in 2020, up more than 50% in the last five years, according to a survey of larger retailers by the National Retail Federation.
New Program Provides Small Businesses with Easier Access to Credit
From the Washington Retail Association

Washington State Rep. Jacquelin Maycumber, R-Republic, says rural small businesses will get a much-needed economic boost now that Gov. Jay Inslee has signed legislation she proposed into law.

House Bill 1015 created the Equitable Access to Credit Program within the Department of Commerce for the purpose of awarding grants to qualified lending institutions. Maycumber said the program will provide small businesses with easier access to credit.

“Entrepreneurs and small businesses are a key to bringing economic stability to rural and underserved communities,” she said.

HB 1015 also creates a Business and Occupation (B&O) tax credit for contributions made to the program.

How Tech Companies are Supporting Ukraine
From the U.S. Chamber of Commerce

American tech companies are leveraging their resources, capabilities, and expertise to assist Ukraine and defend its sovereignty against Russian aggression.

On February 24, hours before Russian tanks rolled across the border, Microsoft’s Threat Intelligence Center detected a new round of cyberattacks against Ukraine’s digital infrastructure – a “wiper” malware aimed at government ministries and financial institutions. The company immediately notified Ukraine’s cyber authority and provided technical advice to thwart the malware, now denominated “FoxBlade.”

April is Work Zone Awareness Month
Graphic credit to workzonesafety.org

Work Zone Awareness Month is kicking off after an extremely challenging March filled with many collisions across the state. Nationally, Work Zone Awareness Week will be observed April 11-15 this year.

The Washington State Department of Transportation is asking the traveling public to help curb the trend since early 2020 with the seriousness of collisions that are happening. The department is asking everyone, every day to be looking out for the safety of themselves and others around them. WSDOT says Washington averages almost 626 highway work zone injuries each year. The top three causes are following too closely, speeding, and driving while distracted.

Please do your part to slow the trend of serious crashes by always staying focused and alert, slowing down, securing your loads, and respecting the lives of everyone else out on the roads.
