Rodman Ride for Kids
Silver Lining Spinners Noah Hodgetts, Jim Gomez and Anne Bowie participate in a training ride for the Rodman Ride.

Jim Gomez and Deb Schachter are very intentional about making a positive impact with their time.  Jim says, "Since we don't have kids of our own, we've discussed ways that we can share our hearts, time and energy with kids who might need some positive adult interactions in their lives."  Deb heard about Silver Lining Mentoring from Board Member Anne Bowie, who knew that Deb was looking to make a positive impact in the life of a young person.  Anne says, "I knew that Deb wanted to make a difference and that her personality and background would make her a wonderful mentor."

Deb has been matched with her mentee for over a year.  Jim knew that he wanted to support Deb, "I just want to support her and Silver Lining, and honestly, getting involved with The Rodman Ride for Kids was a no-brainer for me. I love cycling and I'm out every weekend on my bike, so why not join the Spinners?"  Jim adds that he is so proud of Deb's commitment to her mentee.

Jim is also riding in memory of his own mentor, Robert McMurray, known to most as Bobby Mac, who passed away last year.  "Bobby was a true friend and mentor to a lot of riders.  He helped people discover things about themselves through cycling.  He led weekend rides out of Quad Cycles in Arlington and started each and every ride by asking us to ride with love in our hearts and smiles on our faces. Riding with the Silver Lining Spinners is a way I can share that love and smiles with others."

Silver Lining Mentoring Camping Trip
On August 22nd and 23rd, Silver Lining Mentoring youth, mentors and staff got together on Cape Cod for a weekend of camping.  The annual camping trip was an energizing weekend in which youth, mentors and staff came together to conquer unfamiliar situations and challenges.  As always at Silver Lining Mentoring, all participants challenge themselves by choice.  This means that all youth define their own success.  For some, success was facing a fear of swimming, while for others it was standing on the dock and cheering on fellow campers.

One young person who attended the camping trip for the first time said, "I will definitely be back.  There will always be someone to spot you and catch you if you fall."

Funder Spotlight: Social Venture Partners

In 2014 Silver Lining Mentoring was honored to be chosen as a three-year investee by Social Venture Partners (SVP).  Over the past year, SVP consultants have been working closely with Silver Lining Mentoring, using their business counsel to help us take our organization to the next level, so that we can have an even greater impact on youth in foster care.  We are grateful for all of the expertise that SVP and its consultants continue to provide.

One of our SVP consultants, Don Hawley, was recently profiled in the Concord Journal for his work with SVP.   Click here to read the article.
