Contracts Due!

Today is May 31, the last day to get your signed contracts turned in, if you have not already done so. Remember to keep a copy for you that shows the date you turned it in just in case there is a question. That could be an email or if you drop it off it off as KSD ask them to stamp it with the date received and ask a for a copy of it. Hold on to this for your records.

If you are taking a full-time leave or even a partial leave of absence next year, sign and turn in your contract. If you don't sign and turn it into your HR generalist, what do you have to take a leave from? Unsure you'll be returning; KEA highly recommends that you sign and turn in your contract with the knowledge that you can resign your position anytime through June 30th without an issue. After July 1st it is still possible but more than likely KSD will hold you to your contract until a suitable replacement can be hired.

Principal Effective Ed (PEE)

Every year the district counts on members not submitting their (PEE) for payment. Some new members were never told what PEE is or what to do to claim these hours; other members just forget. Don’t forget, fill out your timesheet and list a simple description of the events (book club, meeting, school event) then turn it in!

Don't leave your earned money on the table, turn in your PEE.

Employee Discretionary Leave (EDL)

Page 37 of the current CBA states that three (3) days of EDL may be carried forward for use in the following year. At the beginning of May, you should have received an email from Payroll with instructions on how to "roll over" your eligible days. You have until June 10th to make this request. If you have not received or cannot find these electronic notifications, please email payroll to request they resend.

If the rollover request is not received and you have a balance of at least one-half workday the district will pay you this time at the guest teacher rate.

Classroom Moves

Did you know that there is release time or compensation for anyone being forced or directed to move classrooms? Below are the different scenarios that qualify for time or pay. Additionally, the district will provide boxes and moving supplies and will move materials. You may request these supplies from your office manager.

Change in Assignment to a Different School

If you are moving to a different building due to the IVT, you are entitled to 3 days of release time OR 3 days (22.5 hours) of per diem pay.

·   This includes volunteers that rolled up to 6th grade.

·   This does not include those that interviewed and were hired for positions in other buildings.

Change in Assignment within Same School

If you are being changed to another teaching assignment within your building that also results in moving classrooms, you are entitled to 2 days of release time OR 2 days (15 hours) of per diem pay.

Classroom Move within Same School

If you are being directed to move classrooms within your current building, you are entitled to 2 days of release time OR 2 days (15 hours) of per diem pay.

·   Make sure to ask your building admin if you are being directed to move classrooms. If you volunteer to move, you are not entitled to release time or compensation.

Time to Purge the Building File

Many of our KEA members will be working with new administrators next year due to boundary changes, sixth grade roll up, and attrition. It’s advisable to check your building file before summer break and remove anything that you don’t wish to be on record. This is especially true if you have a new administrator.

We are hearing that some administrators are pushing back saying all documents must stay in your file for three years. The contract language states that materials may be kept for up to three years. You may remove anything in your building file older than 3 years. The contract also states that “Employees will be notified of all items that will be placed in personnel files and building working folders as confirmed by initialing or electronic confirmation delivery.” If you wish to remove documents that are not initialed or a statement acknowledging your electronic confirmation, you may remove these documents now as this is a contract violation.

Let your office manager know that you would like to look at your building file. If you have any issues, please contact Christie Padilla – cpadilla@washingtonea.org

Plan Book:

They do not need to be turned into the office at the end of the year, unlike your grades. The only requirement for plan books is that they must be stored for a year, which could be in your classroom. Many teachers use their plan books the following year to help with their planning.

Second Annual Give and Take

Do you have gently used classroom items that you just don't use anymore, but don't want to just toss? Maybe you're retiring and don't know what to do with all the supplies you've collected over the years.

KEA will take these items off your hands! From now until the end of July, email or call KEA to set up a time to bring your items in. Then KEA will organize these items so that our new teachers can come in and shop in August.

Retiring This Year?

If you, or someone you know, is retiring this school year please let KEA know by emailing us at kentea@washingtonea.org.

Every year, KEA has a retirement celebration to honor the service of our teachers. We want to make sure that all our soon-to-be retirees receive an invite.

Report Cards

Per the CBA (pg 84) "Teachers shall be given at least four (4) days (excluding weekends or holidays) following the end of each grading period to complete student-progress and/or semester reports."

All grades and report cards are due by June 29th this year.
