Tips to Adjust to Heat and Humidity

As the temperatures rise, adapting your running and walking routine to handle the heat and humidity is essential for both comfort and safety. Here are five tips to help you adjust and maintain your outdoor activities even as the mercury climbs.

1. Hydrate Properly: Drink water throughout the day, not just before or after your run. Consider an electrolyte supplement if you're sweating more than usual to replace lost salts and minerals.

2. Dress Appropriately: Wear lightweight, breathable, and moisture-wicking clothes to help keep your body cool. Light colors are preferable as they reflect the sun’s rays better than darker shades.

3. Time Your Workouts Wisely: Try to run or walk early in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are cooler. Avoid the midday sun when the heat and humidity are at their peak.

4. Adjust Your Pace: Start slower than usual to give your body time to adjust to the heat. It’s okay to take breaks and you shouldn’t expect to hit your usual times under such conditions.

5. Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to signs of heat exhaustion, including dizziness, headache, and nausea. If you feel overheated, stop immediately, find shade, and hydrate.

Staying active in the heat requires some adjustments, but with the right precautions, you can continue to enjoy your runs and walks safely. Always prioritize your wellbeing and adapt your routines as needed to ensure you stay healthy and hydrated throughout the summer months.

Runner Spotlight - Lisa Kincaid

Continuing our features on Run the 502 stars, those who entered and completed all 11 races!

My first 5k was in 2018. I always said I would never run. But something clicked in my mid 40’s and I thought I might try it. My only son was a high school senior and I knew he would be leaving the nest in a year. The idea of “empty nest” worried. A friend encouraged me to join them in a 5k. I was worried and scared and nervous and excited. When I crossed that first finish line I was hooked.

I love the variety of places to run in the 502. Louisville and southern Indiana have some beautiful places to run together and run the 502 allows you to explore so many of these. I also love the bling and completing the 502 gets an extra medal.

My favorite distance is the 5k.

My favorite place to run around Louisville is through Cherokee park. Even with the hills.

Outside of Louisville I love to run at Disney.

I completed the Dopey challenge at Disney in 2023. I am most proud of this.

I love how kind and encouraging everyone is. Cheering for strangers you pass and receiving high fives from others as you as running is the best!!

Advice…keep going. No matter your pace, just keep going and have fun.

The races are run very well. Organization and communication from the race staff is great. The dates and times of races work well for me.

Thank you for having a great race series in Louisville and southern Indiana. Looking forward to the next season to begin.
