Sherman Oaks Neighborhood Council August 2024: Issue #24-8

Welcome to the August 2024 edition of the Sherman Oaks Neighborhood Council's (SONC) newsletter, the Ziff Flyer.

Message from the President

Lindsay Imber

email: lindsay.imber.sonc@gmail.com

Due to a logistical licensing issue, we have had to change our August movie in the park and will now screen the film, Minions The Rise of Gru. The date and time, the evening of Saturday, August 17, remain unchanged from before and we look forward to seeing you there. A Back to School Backpack Giveaway will precede the event at 6pm, limited to the first 30 students only.

July's Barbie Movie event was another wonderful night in the park and it was really nice to see the community out for a fun evening. I greatly enjoyed spending another event working alongside SONC 1st Vice President Howard Katchen, Treasurer Jeffrey Hartsough, Secretary Stacey Segarra-Bohlinger, Outreach Committee Chair Kylee Peña, Outreach Committee Members Neal Roden and David Silverman, Board Members Christy Adair, Thelma Mericle and Dylan Shea, and future Board Member Carter Ranshaw.

Thank you for your continued interest in and dedication to the Sherman Oaks community. Please stay safe and be kind to one another.

With Pride and Determination—

Lindsay

How to Attend SONC Committee Meetings

Whereas the monthly Board meeting takes place at the larger Sherman Oaks East Valley Adult Center (5056 Van Nuys Blvd), in-person SONC committee meetings are generally held at Sherman Oaks Martin Pollard Branch Library, 14245 Moorpark Street, Sherman Oaks, CA 91423 while virtual committee meetings are held via telephone or Zoom. Each Committee Chair is empowered to select a meeting format that works best for their committee. Meeting locations, formats (in-person vs virtual), dates, and times are listed on the applicable agenda published before the meeting.

For information on specific times and locations for each meeting please consult the SONC website calendar page:

Jeff Kalban, Chair

The Vision and PLUM Committees are dark in August. On September 5, (6:30 PM at the Library) The Vision Committee will review the Planning Department’s proposed rezoning of Sherman Oaks (called the Community Plan Update) and discuss our concerns and what needs to be addressed to assure a better future for our community. On September 19, the PLUM Committee will be reviewing a proposed cannabis shop at 13711 Ventura Blvd. and a request by World Market, 15201 Ventura Blvd., for permission to sell a full line of alcoholic beverages for off-site consumption. Don't miss out on our regular community engagement opportunities at the Sherman Oaks Library:

Vision: First Thursday of every month at 6:30pm.

Planning, Land Use, and Land Management Committee (PLUM): Third Thursday at 6:30pm.

Your participation is crucial in shaping the vibrant future of Sherman Oaks. Together, let's build a community we're proud to call home!

What is a Neighborhood Council?
The Neighborhood Council system enables meaningful civic participation for all Angelenos and serves as a voice for improving government responsiveness to local communities and their needs. We are an advisory body to the City of Los Angeles, comprised of stakeholder volunteers who are devoted to the mission of improving our communities.

Neighborhood Councils advise the Mayor, City Council and City Departments on the City budget and will give local residents greater say over the decisions that affect our lives. You can view a brief video explaining what Neighborhood Councils do and what it means to be a Neighborhood Council member here.
