The Centurion Law Enforcement
FCPO Newsletter and Bible Study
The "thin blue line " covered by the blood of Christ.
Fellow  Sheepdogs  & Supporters:

Last week I shared an in-depth study on  Proverbs 27:17  (" Iron Sharpens Iron " if you missed it). I would be remiss if I didn't follow that up with the one written by fellow past FCPO National Board Member Chuck Gilliland as part of his outstanding work, The Book of Proverbs Through the Eyes of a Cop . Take a few moments to read and apply Chuck's version of  Iron Sharpens Iron

In that same vein, the study I'm sharing with you this week is a recap of the message I gave at our TRUTH CHURCH Calvary Men of Truth men's study last Saturday. The gist is that protecting our houses of worship is as much a calling as what we do on the street. Scroll down to "Sheepdogs on the Wall."

Here on the local front, we're "on" for this week's FCPO-Aurora chapter fellowship where we are studying through the Book of Acts. The 411 is "below right" -- join us!

Stay safe on the street but radically bold in sharing the hope we have in Christ with others!

RESOURCES

(1) Since this week's Bible study deals (in part) with protecting our churches, here is a great set of resources for you (the FREE resources from former US Marshall Tina Lewis Rowe are particularly good): Assessing the Safety & Security of Houses of Worship.  In addition, I continue to recommend the Sheepdog Seminars (see below).

(2) My brother-in-Christ and fellow officer, Charlie Jacob Eipper's book is a "must read" for every cop and sheepdog:   Jesus Christ on Killing.

NEED PRAYER?

(1) Please be in prayer for our upcoming outreach to our own in DC during Police Week 2017.

(2) Please pray for my brother-in-Christ and fellow servant-warrior Jim Bontrager. So much going on (the enemy goes after those who are the most effective): God knows the details (and let's not ask for them) -- just pray!

(3) Thanks to all who prayed for me in my recent case review: it went well and God gave me favor. In addition, I got a conviction on a major securities fraud case that I've had open since 2014.  PTL!

(4) Pray for my bride Diana -- she is having a knee pain issue that is impacting her sleep and adding to a level of heavy weariness.

Have a prayer request or announcement you would like included here? Need prayer?   Email me !  I also post prayer requests on my Facebook page ("friend" me).

UPCOMING EVENTS

(1) Here's the upcoming   Sheepdog Training Seminar Schedule  -- highly recommended!

(2) It is not too early to start planning for/praying about Police Week 2017. Here's the preliminary 411: Police Week 2017 Preliminary Schedule (more as I have it).

The Centurion Law Enforcement Ministry

The Centurion Law Enforcement Ministry is a FCPO-affiliated, evangelical Christian outreach to our own in law enforcement. These newsletters and Bible studies are part of this effort and past editions can be found on our website and on social media  ( Facebook and Twitter ) pages. Feel free to adapt these messages for your own individual or group use and please share them with others.

In addition, I regularly speak at both law enforcement and civilian conferences and events around the country -- please shoot me an email if I can be of service to your church, agency or organization.

Fellowship of Christian Peace Officers
FCPO-USA exists to provide biblical support ("backup"), accountability and iron sharpens iron fellowship to Christian officers first in the U.S. and throughout the world as well. My chapter -- FCPO #217/-((FCPO Metro Denver and Aurora), typically meets every 2nd and 4th Thursday at Calvary Aurora (High School Room, 7 PM) for "cop church" Bible study, prayer and servant-warrior fellowship . Spouses are both welcome and encouraged to attend with their LEO! Our next meeting is set for this Thursday, March 9th. Hope to see you there!

Information on the other FCPO chapters meeting around the country can be found on the Chapter Locator pages on the FCPO-USA website.

Sheepdogs on the Wall

A Biblical understanding of our call to protect our houses of worship (and the "Sheepdog Ethos" in general).

I have been speaking and writing on church security and the sheepdog ethos since even before my spiritual ("born again") birthday. In fact, it was through such an event that God prompted cop-turned-pastor Manny Hays to shove me into Christian ministry (the start of THIS ministry). When I first began teaching on this subject, there were not very many of us doing so. Sadly, while it is now much more common, there still remains little understanding of the biblical basis for protecting our houses of worship (and for self-defense in general). In fact, my friend Lt. Col. Dave Grossman spends a good deal of time in his own seminars on the issue of denial, and Jimmy Meeks of Sheepdog Seminars rightly states, " We have now documented over 700 violent deaths  on church and faith based property since 1999. In addition, thousands of sex crimes have occurred on church and faith-based property. We beg you, we plead with you - in tears - for the sake of your precious flock, do something before the enemy strikes your people. Do not fall prey to the mentality of the people in Amos's day, who said: " Nothing bad will happen to us ." (Amos 9:10)." Accordingly, God is pressing me to again share a message on this important topic.

Part of the inspiration for the title of this study comes via fellow chaplain/servant-warrior Jim Bontrager and his Warrior on the Wall Ministries.  One of his favorite quotes (and mine as well) is " I looked for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it ..." Ezekiel 22:30. Indeed, God is looking for men and women " among them."

So who then is a " sheepdog" -- a " man among them"? I open every single newsletter by sharing Col. Grossman's " On Sheep, Wolves and Sheepdogs" -- and for good reason. Evil is a reality in our world, and as we get closer to and closer the our Lord's return, that evil is growing ever stronger and more desperate (with our churches in particular being prime targets for attack). So are you a sheepdog? A servant-warrior "among them"?  As cops, we have little trouble understanding the sheepdog concept, but the sad truth is that the vast majority of those who serve in our God-ordained profession are not believers (thus this ministry). Moreover, of those who are and attend church regularly (as we should -- not "optional" for believers), getting them to train and carry their life-saving tools to church is often difficult indeed.

So what else does our Lord tell us on this issue in His Word?  Here are just a few things for you to consider:

(1) Judges 7 should be required reading for every sheepdog.  What did " God's 300" do that was different from the rest of the army? They "lapped" -- they kept watch with their heads up and eyes open (again, I can find NOTHING in Scripture that mandates we pray with our heads bowed and eyes closed).

(2) 1 Peter 5:8 -- " B e alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour."

(3)  Acts 20:28-29 --   "Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which He bought with His own blood.  I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock."

(4)  Psalm 82:3-4  --  Give justice to the weak and the fatherless;  maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.

(5) Nehemiah 4

(6) "Do you even train?" Psalm 144:1 --  Blessed be the LORD, my rock, who trains my hands for war, and my fingers for battle; (added emphasis mine)

(7)  And, for those of us who serve in law enforcement in particular, our signature passage -- Romans 13:1-4 -- that is paraphrased, "... God's ministers for good and a terror  against evil ." (Are you the "terror" against evil God has called you to be?)

More?  Here a great stand-alone study on biblical self-defense:     What Does the Bible Say About Self-Defense?

Throughout His human ministry here on Earth, our Lord often spoke of the importance of protecting the sheep (the "sheep gate" of his day was most often the shepherd himself, and likely his sheepdogs with him, lying across the opening -- John 10:1-15). While the primary emphasis is on the spiritual, I also believe the physical is strongly implied.

It is important to state that the call to protect our homes, our spouses, our kids and our churches is not just for law enforcement personnel but rather for all who would take up the call to be a " man among them" on that proverbial wall. Understand also that it is not just about carrying a weapon. In fact (again, sadly), the vast majority of concealed weapons carriers do NOT train on how to retain their weapon or to survive a life and death physical engagement with a "wolf" (to be fair, getting my fellow cops to train in the gym and/or dojo is often just as tough). Yet it is the "wolves" -- those who would hurt our loved ones in a house of worship and elsewhere -- who make training for such encounters a way of life.

Teaching on this sheepdog concept, fellow police detective and minister J. Warner Wallace correctly wrote, " If every field was filled with sheepdogs, there would be little or no threat from wolves at all. The only reason sheepdogs are necessary is because there are still sheep, and sheep need protection. But if we could genetically alter every sheep and turn each one into a sheepdog, the threat from wolves would vanish.  You may not feel like you're the biggest sheepdog in the yard, but when everyone in your midst is a sheepdog of one kind or another, you're in a good place. That's why each of us needs to slowly transform ourselves from the   prey   to the   prepared . It's time for all of us to become   sheepdogs ." -- Why Every Christian Needs to be a Sheepdog.  AMEN to that!

In closing, notice the word " Christian" Jim Wallace and I have both used in this study. What does that word mean and what is its implication for us here?  A recent Barma study revealed that perhaps only four percent of those who call themselves "Christian" in America are genuinely that...meaning they hold to a biblical worldview and have been born again in Christ. Folks, we can't truly be the sheepdogs God has called us to be (whether it be in our churches or on the street as cops) unless we are serving under the leading, protection and direction of the Holy Spirit!  And who has that indwelling power and presence?   ONLY those who are genuinely born again in Christ!  Is that you?  With the understanding that it is ONLY through Christ ( John 14:6) that we can be saved (no, we can't "badge" our way into heaven...or out of hell), consider the following:

(1) Jesus said, " Repent and believe in the Good News " -- Mark 1:15 . To " repent " is to do a 180 -- a radical change of mind as it relates to your sin. To " believe " as God intends it to  completely and radically surrender to Him in faith  ("believe" and "faith" have the same Greek root) in the same way you have faith that your body armor will stop the rounds it is designed to stop!

(2) In John 3:1-21, Jesus said, "... you must be born again." Note our Lord's emphasis on " must" (not "may" or "should"). This is the " life-saving/life-changing" personal relationship (not "religion") with Christ that I stress so often. See " What does it mean to be a born again Christian." Remember that you can't be in a RELATIONSHIP with yourself or an idol!

AND then...

(a) Take the " Good Person Test" and see how you do. Then go to...
(c)  Cops and Salvation (a powerful, short message from police Commander Travis Yates of Ten-Four Ministries and Law Officer Magazine ).
(d) Got saved?  Now what?
