Welcome! Thank you for joining us in worship.

Friends of God, believe this –

God loved the world, God loves the world, we are the beloved!

May the truth of this great love story, shine through our worship today,

and renew our sense of calling.

So come, with your tiredness, frustrations, and discouragements;

come with your doubts, fears, and your longings;

come, to discover yet again how Jesus reveals God’s love and mercy.

Opening Prayer

Holy God, in the psalms we hear of your power and might. Open us to know you more fully,

to honor you more honestly, to worship you more joyfully in our time together. Help us hear your call for this congregation and for each of us today,

that we might be confident in our work, our play, and our lives as your people. Amen

Prayers of the People

Lord, like the lawyer Nicodemus, we come to you in hidden ways. We have lots of questions and concerns. We aren’t always sure that you will even listen to them or that you will think our queries are foolish. New life sounds wonderful. We have made messes in this life, some of which we have cleaned up, but there are others that we have swept under the rug, hidden away in the closet, hidden from ourselves and we believe hidden from you. But you know us better than we want to be known. You know our thoughts and actions. Help us, Lord. Guide us to turn things around so that there is peace and hope. We offer to you concerns for family, community, and nation; and yet at times we don’t really expect that anything will change. Bring your presence powerfully to us. Convince us of the hope that rests in you alone and walk with us on the pathway of grace and growth. We offer this prayer in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Scripture

John 3:1-17

3 Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. 2 He came to Jesus by night and said to him, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with that person.” 3 Jesus answered him, “Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above.” 4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother’s womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. 6 What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not be astonished that I said to you, ‘You must be born from above.' 8 The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” 9 Nicodemus said to him, “How can these things be?” 10 Jesus answered him, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things?

11 “Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen, yet you do not receive our testimony. 12 If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. 14 And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. 16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. 17 “Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world but in order that the world might be saved through him.

Gifts of generosity and grace

You may give gifts, tithes, and offerings online below or mail in a check to Grace Community Christian Church. Thank you for making space for the gifts of God to be shared within and beyond our walls this season. Your generous tithes and offerings, and the seeds you sow make a life changing difference. This month, please consider making a gift over and above your tithes and offerings to support the New Church Ministry of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) through the 2024 Pentecost Offering.

Scripture has a way of working inside us as we hear, read and contemplate. In Romans, Paul teaches clearly that “brothers and sisters” have not been given a spirit of slavery, but a spirit of adoption.

For many who have been adopted, their adoptive parents work to assure them of their place in the family. Sometimes adoption means a change of name. Paul uses this image to assure those who will hear his language that “adopted” means “claimed.” Adopted children are heirs, just as children born into a family. Believers, now adopted into the family of God, are God’s heirs, and joint heirs with God’s Son, Jesus Christ.

What a gift! In joyful recognition of being claimed and named as heirs, our natural instinct is gratitude. So, with full delight, let us share our gifts to support this part of the Body of Christ as we receive our morning offering.

Offering prayer

We are grateful, Abba/God, for the ways you claim us and name us as your own beloved children. Thank you for this adoption, and for our ability to recognize we are fully yours. Receive our thanks offerings. Inspire us to use them wisely. Help us be a nurturing community into which all your adopted children will be welcomed. Amen.
