NEVER FORGET

Yom HaShoah services were held on the campuses of JSL, led by Dr. Charles Silow. Staff and volunteers at Fleischman Residence participated by reading aloud some relevant quotes, lit candles and joined survivors and residents in this meaningful memorial service, honoring the lives of 6 million murdered in the Holocaust. I read a quote from Elie Wiesel, a Romanian-born American writer, professor, political activist, Nobel laureate, and Holocaust survivor, who said, “Sometimes we must interfere. When human lives are endangered, when human dignity is in jeopardy, national borders and sensitivities become irrelevant. Whenever men or women are persecuted because of their race, religion, or political views, that place must - at that moment - become the center of the universe.”

8 OVER 80 SPOTLIGHT:

ELLIE SLOVIS

We met Ellie Slovis in her home this week to videotape her for Eight Over Eighty. This tennis, pickleball, and ping pong-playing athlete rides horses, hikes, and enjoys the great outdoors, instilling a love of beauty and nature in her four children and 12 grandchildren who lovingly call her “Bama.”

Ellie has lived many lives, inspired by her devoted mother’s volunteerism, who raised the family of five siblings in New York while her father, an obstetrician, delivered babies throughout her formative years.

Activation

"Mazel tov on your new cell phone," I said recently as I greeted a resident in the elevator holding a new cell phone box. "Don't congratulate me yet. I have not yet activated it."

I walked out excited having gleaned a life lesson from his response. If activation has not taken place, there is no reason to celebrate and claim ownership of one's cell phone.

In life, it is much the same. True existence begins when you activate your individual purpose to meet your role in life. The world needs not only you but your gift and contributions to the greater cause.

As Mark Twain says, "The two most important days of your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why."

L’Chaim!

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
