FINDING JOY, BALANCE AND MEANING

By Jo Strausz Rosen

It can be difficult to deal with darkness and lean into the light. How can we live at the height of hope and optimism when we are bombarded with news of natural or manmade disasters, and the injustices faced by so many? How can we let go of the feelings of sadness when we learn of the horrors in the world and find our way back to hope and joy? And is that the proper response to tragedy?

Darkness is a path toward despair, from which comes more darkness. Staying in the light gives us hope, and forges a path toward being our most giving, helpful, joyful, genuine selves. Although it seems counterintuitive, our ability to help when there is tragedy or disaster relies on our hope, on our light. And living in the light not only gives us joy, but gives joy to those around us, helping all of us live our best and be our best.

Pictured above are Honoree Ellie Slovis, and student, Camryn Katzen.

Both dynamic women have a lot in common – active, busy volunteer lives for great causes. Ellie has volunteered at Cranbrook Institute of Science and initiated their science curriculum for visually and hearing-impaired children. She volunteered at Children’s Hospital as the “art lady,” bringing projects to children who were being treated for cancer. Ellie taught English to new Americans, joined the Soviet Jewry Committee, and co-chaired the Bar/Bat Mitzvah Twinning Program to help children understand the struggles of Jews in the former Soviet Union. Additionally, Ellie was actively involved in the Family-to-Family Program, linking families of new Americans with families in the community, and initiated a “Coffee and Conversation” program at Congregation Beth Shalom. She joined the Holocaust Education Committee and as an active member of NCJW, she is on the committees of Passport to Israel, Wrapped in Love, Shoes to Share, which she initiated, Meals on Wheels, and the Green Committee and a former VP of NCJW where she is an active member of the NCJW-MI Back to School Store.

Cami Katzen is a Student Ambassador, at Frankel Jewish Academy and member of both the varsity basketball and tennis teams, and the National Honor Society. Outside of school, she is a member of the UMatter Board, where she works with other teens to end the stigma around mental health. Additionally, she serves on the JARC Teen Action Council and on the executive board of Aliyah BBG. She is Madricha at Temple Israel Religious School every Sunday morning, and she looks forward to helping kindergarteners get excited about being Jewish. We are so proud of these two women!

Invitations will be mailed.

The Eight Over 80 webpage will soon be transformed so that everyone can contribute in honor of this year’s class of honorees and students! For more information contact Nicole nlupi@jslmi.org 248-592-5098 to Sponsor, purchase tickets, or place an ad.

JSL HAPPENINGS

BRAIN POWER

WITH SANDY

Every Tuesday, residents at Hechtman Apartments can flex their mind muscles with "Brain Power" activities. Resident Service

Coordinator, Sandy Smith facilitates activities like word games and puzzles. She shares the importance of "continuing to stimulate our brains with new information. Brain Power is challenging each time we work on a word. The residents who join Brain Power benefit cognitively. This is an opportunity for socialization and support for all who attend."

Sandy says she also benefits and learns from her interactions with the residents.

DOR L' DOR

Throughout the year, Hillel 6th graders visit and form bonds with JSL residents, as part of the Dor L' Dor program. Last week, for Tu BiShevat, they decorated pots and planted parsley. When they get together for Passover, they will enjoy the parsley as part of their Seder.

Finger Pointing

Finger pointing is often used to blame another. However, I would like to share two positive finger pointing experiences that I witnessed:

A revered teacher of mine in my youth would pray daily with vigor and passion. He would point two fingers at every word, line by line clearly enunciating every word.

At another opportunity I was praying in a Sephardic synagogue where I observed a beautiful custom. When the open Torah was raised for all to see, all those present pointed two fingers to the Torah in recognition and reverence of the verse, “This is the Torah which Moses placed before the children of Israel.”

These remain special memories that remind me of the importance of pointing our fingers for the right purpose.

L’Chaim!

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
