ORDINARY PEOPLE CHANGE THE WORLD

by Jo Strausz Rosen

This past week, several of our Jewish Senior Life team members attended the always inspiring annual conference through AJAS, The Association for Jewish Aging Services. We learned from other colleagues in nonprofit Jewish Homes from around the country and in Canada by listening and participating in a series of lectures and round table discussions with notable speakers on topics that informed and inspired.

During a stimulating discourse with American novelist. Brad Meltzer, UM graduate, non-fiction writer, TV show creator, and comic book author, Brad recalled the people in his life who changed him… who taught him that success and happiness are within his reach…that we can remain resilient even in the face of the most difficult challenges like antisemitism, hunger, and cancer. He asked, “How will we be remembered? What will our legacy be?”

FRIENDS

We had a nice taste of spring last week and that got me all inspired about our fashion shows. Apparently, I wasn’t the only one. We already have 20 models signed up! But we need your help!

First of all, as long as it’s still nippy out, it’s a great time to pop into our boutiques and shop our winter sweater and jacket collection – everything is on sale to make room for spring gear.

Secondly, outfitting 20 models is a big project, and we could use some extra hands. If you’ve got a great eye for fashion and a couple of hours to spare on March 29, April 2, April 5 or April 10, please give me a call!

On the subject of fabulous upcoming events, it’s time to register honorees for this year’s Bessie Spector Oldest Jewish Americans Celebration, which will be Friday, June 21, at Adat Shalom Synagogue. Honorees must be 95 or older by December 31, 2024. Last year we had over 300 guests, including over 100 honorees. In order to give our honorees a wonderful experience, it takes a whole band of helpful volunteers. If you’d like to be part of this very special event, please let me know. I promise a delightful day!

Monday is National Grammar Day. It was started by the Society for the Promotion of Good Grammar (I am really not making this up) and is dedicated to spreading the word that grammar matters. We agree and we adhered strongly to that principle in “Don’t Write Me Off.” Check out these great stories by our residents and the expert editing! Available on Amazon and on our website.

If you’d like to find out more about obscure annual days of recognition, volunteer, get more information on FRIENDS or any of our projects, or just chat, call or email me any time! 248 592-5062 / brobinson@jslmi.org.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

Cauliflower Crust Pizza with Tomatoes, Pesto & Eggs

Delicious and nutricious! You can swap poached eggs for fried eggs or sunny side up eggs. The runny yolk tastes delicious over the crispy crust!

MUSIC AT MEER

Marco Floyd and Derek Gillespie performed Motown music for the Meer residents who danced and sang to the familiar melodies. Thanks to the generosity of our donors throughout the years, JSL hosts live entertainment to provide fun and musical memories for residents and staff alike!

TO THE BEAT

Prentis resident Terri Silberstein taught Coville residents how to play and enjoy a variety of percussion instruments during a lively drum circle. Learning new skills at any age is an inspiration!

FLOWER AND PLASTIC POWER

The staff at The Dorothy & Peter Brown Jewish Community Adult Day Program inspired participants to use recycled plastic bottles to make floral art designs.

AT HOME WORKOUT

This is a 20-minute workout us great for beginners and seniors. It's cardiovascular and similar to the old times of "jazzercise" and adding on type of routines.

THE MORE YOU KNOW MARCH FUN FACT

In the early days of the telephone, operators would pick up a call and use the phrase, "Well, are you there?" It wasn't until 1895 that someone suggested answering the phone with the phrase "number please?"

Meals at Your Doorstep

(Due to the recent uptick in Covid in several of our JSL communities,

I am once again publishing this reflection)

I recently spoke to a resident who shared that during these challenging times, her most joyous and anticipated moment in the day is when she finds her meal at her doorstep. (Special thanks to those who deliver the wholesome food to the doorsteps while providing joy).

In spite of the overwhelming COVID-19 challenge, most will agree there is something positive in everything, including this pandemic.

Let me take you on a journey some three thousand years ago. Traveling through the desert from Egypt to the promised Land of Israel, the divinely endowed manna (fresh wafer-like food customized to one’s taste) fell from heaven daily and sustained the people. The undeserving had to fetch their manna from afar and prepare its contents for consumption. For those neither undeserving nor righteous, the manna was more accessible. For the righteous, the ready-to-eat manna fell at their doorstep.

History repeats itself. The period of COVID-19 is likened to a desert with limited amenities. Just as our travels through the desert had some redeeming qualities – daily food from heaven and for those deserving, it fell at their doorstep, so too this is perhaps the goodness and virtue in finding your meals at your doorstep. It is a sign of how deserving you really are.

I now better appreciate the resident’s anticipation for daily meals delivered to her doorstep.

L’Chaim!

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
