Whitman Council on Aging Ice Cream Social

This past Wednesday, August 24th, the Whitman Council on Aging enjoyed an ice cream social, sponsored by WBZ and Peaceful Meadows Ice Cream. It was a wonderful day and the ice cream was delicious! Happy 60 years of business to Peaceful Meadows from all your “young” friends!

Historical Tidbit:
A little piece of Whitman in Boston
During Whitman's early development it was largely an agricultural town. It had large forests, which provided timber to some of the nearby seaport towns. Around 1790 some of that timber was used to construct the U.S.S. Constitution also known as Old Ironsides. The ship was launched in 1797.

The U.S.S. Constitution is the oldest commissioned warship still on the water today.

The Constitution was involved in the Quasi War with France, along with the War of 1812.

During a battle with a British ship called Guerriere the U.S.S. Constitution inflicted terrible damage, but came out mostly unscathed. It was due to this encounter that she got the name Old Ironsides. People commented that “her sides are made of iron.”

Eventually, the U.S.S. Constitution became a museum piece in Boston's National Historical Park. Today a little piece of Whitman resides in a museum in Boston.

Respectfully Submitted, Gregory Venezia

Plastic Water Bottles

Single use disposable plastic water bottles are everywhere. Using them will be a very hard habit to break, but a really important one. Not only does individual bottled water cost more than any other water source, but the over-all health benefits are questionable & our planet suffers immensely from their use.

1) Plastic water bottles are made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET), a petroleum product. PET requires giant amounts of fossil fuels to produce and transport. 2) Scientists at Goethe University have found that water bottles made from PET plastic leach compounds that mimic the hormone estrogen into the bottled water. This raises questions about their safety. (abc.net science) 3) Americans purchase about 50 billion water bottles per year, averaging about 13 bottles per month for every person in the U.S. (grandviewresearch.com) 4) With such a small percentage being recycled, most of our single use plastic breaks down into tiny beads of plastic particles (nano and micro plastics) which infiltrate everything –our plants, our food, our fish, our air, our bodies.
For yourself & our planet, break the habit.
