Ellen's Book Review

Jennifer Ashley’s

Below Stairs Mysteries

This is a top-notch Victorian-era series set in London. These historical mysteries deliver an impeccably researched setting, a fascinating protagonist with an intriguing past, and lively writing seasoned with just the right measure of dry wit. In the first book, Death Below Stairs, Kat Holloway, a highly sought-after cook, takes a position in a Mayfair mansion. Trouble brews below stairs when her young Irish assistant is murdered. Determined to uncover the truth, Kat enlists the help of Daniel McAdam, a charming delivery man with hidden talents. Together, they unravel a dangerous plot that threatens not only the household but also Queen Victoria herself. The class lines blur as Kat navigates eccentric families, priceless artwork, and treasonous secrets. Best read in order, each of the 7 books so far has its own intriguing case and ongoing character development. From Death Below Stairs to Speculations in Sin, Ashley does a fine job “portraying urban life among the well-to-do and those who serve them”--Publishers Weekly
