The Delaware Rail Safety Committee, formed by the Delaware Safety Council, is working in conjunction with Operation Lifesaver, a national nonprofit rail safety education and public awareness organization dedicated to ending death and injuries due to trespassing and collisions on or near railroad tracks.
The goal of the committee is to bring together state and national stakeholders to address rail crossing safety issues throughout Delaware. I was asked to serve on the Rail Safety Committee with Sen. Stephanie Hansen — as chair and vice chair respectively of the legislative committees addressing transportation policy.
One of the first objectives of the committee is to advertise and promote the See Tracks? Think Train campaign to be held in conjunction with national Rail Safety Week September 23-29.
Future meetings of the committee are planned for Kent and Sussex Counties, with the next meeting taking place in Kent on October 10, 2024, location TBD.
The first meeting was held at the Deer Park Tavern, which is adjacent to a critical — and busy — rail crossing at West Main Street and New London Road. CSX, Amtrak and Norfolk Southern all have railways that run through the 24th district. Rail safety is very important because of its daily impacts on Newark residents, neighborhoods, as well as the University and its student/faculty/staff population.
I look forward to the ongoing work of this committee.
