On The Hill Of Hope!

September 2024 - Recovery Month

Recovery Month

During Recovery Month, we would like to spotlight the inspiring journeys of two HW alumni who are now valued members of our team. Their remarkable stories of resilience and success underscore the impact of our community’s support and dedication. We’re proud of their achievements and hope their experiences serve as hope and motivation for others on their paths to recovery.

"My experience with High Watch has been nothing but positive. I was someone who bounced around from state-run facilities, running back and forth and truly thought there was nothing more I could get out of treatment centers. Until I walked into High Watch for the first time, I felt it in the air; it was different up here. I had never been to a treatment center where the staff genuinely cared about the guests and where people wanted to stay sober. High Watch allowed me to spend five months there to figure some things out and begin putting in the work to stay sober. I also had to realize that 28 days wasn't working for me—I had done it nine times prior. So, I signed up to go to the Hope House, where my life began to change. I was someone who knew how to stay sober in treatment but needed that next step, and the Hope Program offered that to me. Now, being on the other side of it and managing one of our Men's Hope Houses, it is amazing to see these men transform before my eyes and return to get their year coins. That is why we do this as staff—to facilitate an environment where guests are comfortable growing in our care and learning to love themselves. It is my favorite part of my job—seeing the guys that came through the house doing well and living sober, happy lives." — Chris D.

"My journey, like many others, was filled with many stops and starts. I did not believe that sobriety was something I could achieve. I had almost given up and resigned myself to the fact that it wouldn’t happen for me. Thankfully, I did not give up. And on January 5th, 2025, I will have four years sober. I often ask myself what changed this time to “make it stick,” and the answer that comes to me is that I finally put my trust in God. I finally gave up my will. I had a fantastic sponsor who walked me through the steps, and I took them with a new appreciation because I had finally surrendered. I finally found the peace and serenity that so many had told me was possible. I am blessed now that I get to carry that message at High Watch every day. When people come in broken and full of doubt, I can share my story and give them hope that true sobriety is possible for them, too. Getting up every day and bringing kindness and hope to those still suffering makes me love coming to work. I love it when I see the light bulb come on in people’s eyes and can help them work through their challenges." — Brenda B.
