Along about seven miles of Route 7, we're adding a third lane and shared-use paths in each direction, building a pedestrian underpass to access Colvin Run Mill Park, replacing and raising the bridge over Difficult Run, and making many intersection, bicycle and pedestrian improvements. Learn more.
Construction and Design Updates
In August, crews continued construction activities along the corridor:


Area 1 West: Reston Avenue to Baron Cameron Avenue:
  • Constructed curb and placed asphalt along westbound Route 7 between Reston Parkway and Reston Avenue, and between Great Passage Boulevard and Utterback Store Road.
  • Completed new alignment of the Utterback Store Road/Route 7 intersection and opened it to traffic.
  • Shifted traffic on westbound Route 7 between Reston Parkway and Reston Avenue to the north.

Area 1 East: Baron Cameron Avenue to Carpers Farm Way:
  • Continued drilling for noise barrier posts for Wall G3 along eastbound Route 7 east of Capital Church.
  • Continued storm drainage installation along eastbound Route 7.


  • Continued earth-moving activities at the intersection of Route 7 and Baron Cameron Avenue.


  • Continued construction of the retaining wall between eastbound Route 7 and the Colvin Run stream channel.
  • Completed installation of steel piles and began construction of the abutment (structure that supports one end of a bridge) of the eastbound Route 7 bridge on the east side of Difficult Run.


  • Continued storm sewer installation along westbound Route 7 between Towlston Road and Lewinsville Road.
  • Constructed curb along westbound Route 7 between Towlston Road and Forestville Drive.
  • Began grading and placement of cement-treated aggregate, base asphalt and curb stone along westbound Route 7 between Royal Estates Drive and Towlston Road.
  • Continued storm sewer pipe crossings between Towlston Road and Lewinsville Road. 
  • Continued pipe installation for the water main distribution relocations between Towlston Road and Lewinsville Road.

Third-party utility design and relocation activities are also ongoing.

Utterback Store Road was realigned at Route 7.
Concrete is placed in the formwork for the abutment of the Difficult Run bridge.
In Case You Missed It
Construction activities along Route 7 will be ongoing through the fall and winter months, and additional traffic shifts and changes will occur along Route 7. Please see the project website for information on upcoming lane shifts and other roadway impacts.
