September 2016

The weather is cooling just a bit and the leaves are changing colors.  Soon the leaves will be falling from the trees.  A new season is upon us signifying the return of fall programming, a few new classes, and our annual fundraiser.

The Atlantic Street Family Resource Center has new offerings this fall. We are proud to introduce Ages and Stages and Parents as Educational Partners.  Each class presents opportunities for parents and caregivers to learn techniques to boost their children's social and emotional growth, and support their academic needs, too. Our Family Resource Center is dedicated to providing parents and caregivers the indispensable tools essential to raising healthy, successful children and youth.

This Saturday, October 1, we will celebrate 106 years of helping families and communities raise healthy children and youth at the Renaissance Hotel in downtown Seattle. We have an exciting array of both silent and live auction items including Alaska Airlines tickets, a hot air balloon ride, and two Seahawks packages  - the first with pre-game and game passes, the second is attending a practice session and having lunch with the players afterwards.

Thank you to our Raise it Up 2016 sponsors Alaska Airlines, Pepsi, Muckleshoot, MCM, Amerigroup, and Children's Hospital for their commitment to strengthening our community and believing in the endless possibilities for the children, youth and families we serve.

I hope to see many of you on Saturday. There are still a few tickets available. If you are unable to attend, please consider making a donation to our program services.   Thank you for supporting Atlantic Street Center.

Sincerely,
EdithSig

What's Happening at ASCFRC:
Parent/Caregiver Programs
Our parent education programs focus on strengthening family bonds and increasing knowledge and parent-child interactions. Parental participation increases the parents' ability to encourage children's social, emotional and language development. Parents are encouraged to work towards promoting family health and wellness through social and emotional opportunities, increased academic competence.  Other goals include preventing and/or reducing behavioral and emotional problems in young children and eliminating violence. Parents have the chance to engage with peers to discuss topics and practice techniques to foster positive parenting.   Below is  general overview of each of the classes offered at ASFRC.

Incredible Years
An evidence-based program that offers parents the opportunity to learn techniques that support children's social and emotional growth. Parents learn how nurturing, coaching and playing with their child can be a key to success as their children grow.
Guiding Good Choices
This class is geared towards parents of children ages 9-14.  Parents are encouraged use skills such asking open-ended questions, creating opportunities to discuss family goals and setting guidelines for their children.
Parents as Educational Partners
Parents and caregivers learn techniques to promote reading skills, encourage children's learning, foster good habits and routines, engage in the school experience and advocate for the children in their care.

Ages & Stages
First Swing: Parents learn skills and techniques when welcoming a new member to the family. The class discusses a range of topics from labor to what to expect in the first 6 months. Different presenters from various community organizations present a new topic each week.

Part II: In the early years, a child's brain develops connections that serve as the basis for language, reasoning, problem solving, social skills and emotional well-being. Parents learn skills to support each of the five key growth areas most important to a child's development: Relationships, Exploring & Learning, Communication, Playing and Moving.

Kinship Caregivers
Our Kinship Caregiver support group is a safe space for caregivers to receive information and resources and engage in fun activities with peers and young family members.
