Drawing on films made from 1971 to the present day, Abolition Now! 50 Years of the Attica Prison Uprising chronicles, commemorates and politicizes the events of the 1971 uprising and massacre—tracing George Jackson’s influence—through six nonfiction visual representations that came out of it and a digital album.

Third World Newsreel will present TEACH OUR CHILDREN, an experimental documentary on the historic 1971 Attica prison rebellion in upstate New York. It targets the conditions that caused prisoners to take drastic steps toward securing their basic rights. The film questions the reactions of prison warden Oswald, New York governor Nelson Rockefeller, and President Nixon, as well as the death of 31 inmates and prison guards from bullets fired by the National Guard. Through on-site footage taken during and following the rebellion, and follow-up interviews with inmates, this film relates a powerful message concerning prisoner's rights and provides an important historical document. A Third World Newsreel film directed by Christine Choy and Susan Robeson.

CHINATOWN FILES Virtual Screening & Talk
with Filmmaker Amy Chen and Prof Ling-Chi Wang
Presented by the Chinese Historical Society of America
Chinatown Files explores the legacy of McCarthyism on the Chinese American community. Chinese American men and women who were hunted down, jailed and targeted for deportation speak for the first time about how they and their friends were investigated and prosecuted by government agents during the McCarthy witch hunts of the 1950s. At the height of the hysteria, thousands of Chinese immigrants and American citizens of Chinese descent were targeted because of their ethnicity and alleged risk to national security. This cautionary tale of xenophobia and hysteria serves as a reminder of the fragility of constitutional protections today. Directed by Amy Chen, TWN Workshop graduate.

This is the story of the student-led struggle to win Puerto Rican Studies at Brooklyn College, CUNY, in the late 1960s. A mosaic of voices, film footage, and photographs taken by student activists, the film highlights how students and faculty seized the moment to build upon an alliance of Puerto Rican, African American, and other progressive students forged in their communities and the civil rights movement. Together they changed the face of higher education, transforming the curriculum and expanding who gets educated.
