Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

September is here, and for most, it represents the end of summer and the beginning of a new season. Interestingly, September is the 9th month of the year, but September means "seven". In the Roman calendar, there were 10 months, but in 46 BC the 12-month calendar was adopted.

This month is dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows. The concept of Our Lady of Sorrows comes from the prophecy of Simeon who, thirty-three years in advance, foretold to Our Lady that a sword would pierce her heart. Find out more here.

Do you know about the Autumn Ember Days? Each of the four seasons has three days, representing the Ember Days. The Church sets them aside to mark the passage of seasons through prayer and fasting. In September, the Ember Days fall the Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday after the Feast of the Holy Cross (September 14), to give thanks for the grape harvest. Learn more about the Ember Days and other ways to celebrate your faith with family and friends in this month's newsletter.

Please let us know how we can better serve you and your parish as we carry out our mission of evangelization to help parishes bring people to an encounter with Christ and a deeper appreciation of the Catholic faith. (Contact us at family@diocesepb.org)

May God's Mercy and Peace be with you and your family,

This Novena to Our Lady of Sorrows devotion includes prayers honoring each of the Seven Sorrows of Mary. Our Lady of Sorrows, also known as Mater Dolorosa, is a title given to our Blessed Mother and focuses on Mary’s profound suffering and grief during the seven painful events she endured during her life as the mother of Jesus: (1.) the Prophecy of Simeon, (2.) the Flight into Egypt, (3.) the Loss of Jesus in the Temple, (4.) Mary Meets Jesus on the Way to Calvary, (5.) the Crucifixion and Death of Jesus, (6.) the Piercing of Jesus’ Side and the Taking Down of His Body from the Cross, and (7.) the Burial of Jesus.

Lectio divina for kids: Teach your kids to pray with Scripture

If we want our kids to develop a deep, vibrant relationship with Christ, then we need to teach them to pray—and not just memorized prayers or spontaneous vocal prayer (as important as those are), but meditation and contemplation.

God our Father, Creator of the Universe and Lord over all creation, we humbly stand before you as your children in thanksgiving for your loving care and protection. We ask that you keep us safe from all hurricanes and illnesses that may threaten us in the coming seasons. Protect us from all fear and anxiety and give us ardent trust and hope in Your love and mercy. You alone have the power to command the sea, the wind, and the rain. You alone bring peace, calm, and safety. Father, we thank you in advance, for you are our only Refuge. We ask this through Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever. Amen. Mary, Queen of the Apostles, and Patroness of our Diocese, pray for us.

Everyone Can Evangelize

We are all called to evangelize, and thanks to the gift of the Holy Spirit, we are well-equipped for this mission. It may not mean spreading the Gospel in a foreign land or going door-to-door with the Good News—and it may require overcoming some fears—but the Lord is asking each of us to step out of our comfort zone and evangelize one-on-one.

In this Year of Mission, Catholics across the U.S. are saying “yes” to a special form of heart-to-heart accompaniment called the Walk With One initiative.

Do Something Grand

for National Grandparents Day

Celebrate Grandparents Day (Sunday, September 8, 2024) throughout the month of September! This year’s theme, “Grand Minds: Learn, Love, Legacy,” highlights the role of learning across generations and celebrates the ways in which grandparents and older adults inspire, mentor, and shape the future of younger generations.

Grandparents Day Take Action Guide

September 5 is the Feast of

St. Mother Teresa

Saint Mother Teresa established the Missionaries of Charity who cared for people who were poor, hungry, sick, and even dying. She is a symbol of love and charity. She said, " If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one.” On this very special feast day, plan on going to the store or dollar store with your worksheet provided and make bags of blessings for the homeless with your family.

What Are Ember Days?

Among many Catholics and Anglicans, it is a custom to observe Ember Days, a cluster of four sets of three days in the calendar year, roughly around the start of the four seasons. They are set aside by the Church as a way to mark the passage of seasons through prayer and fasting.

The name is derived from the Latin quattuor tempora, meaning “Four Times” or “Four Seasons. The significance of the days of the week is that Wednesday was the day Christ was betrayed, Friday was the day He was crucified, and Saturday was the day He was entombed. The specific themes for each Ember Week of the year are as follows:

excerpts from Ember Days | Dates and Meaning (farmersalmanac.com)

Spring: the Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday after Ash Wednesday, to give thanks for the rebirth of nature and for the gift of light (usually flowers are offered at this time).

Summer: Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday after Pentecost, to give thanks for the wheat crop.

Fall: the Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday after the Feast of the Holy Cross (September 14), to give thanks for the grape harvest.

Winter: the Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday after the Feast of St. Lucy (December 13), during the third week of Advent, to give thanks for the olive crop.
