A Note from Pastor Lance
Pastor Lance Hurst, a white young adult with a large smile, a brown beard and brown hear, wearing a clergy collar and starting in front of the door of FPC of Glen Cove.
To the members & friends of First Presbyterian Church of Glen Cove:

Can you believe that it’s already time for school to start? Before we know it, we’ll be drinking apple cider, pumpkin picking, and warming ourselves by the fire. Of course, all of these activities will continue in a world that has been drastically changed by this pandemic, which still impacts our everyday lives. And it’s in this changed world that we will continue to discern what church looks like for us. What role is church playing in our lives right now? What role do we want it to play? What about the role of the church in our broader community?

We’ve completed our visioning process with Jill White and now we are forming our task force to write our very own strategic plan that will shape the next few years of First Presbyterian Church. We’ve had multiple conversations about who we want to be and what we want to do. And now, we transition to choosing a course of action and figuring out how to make it happen. While there will be some changes that we can implement fairly quickly, most changes will likely take time. Even reviewing our visioning process and the data that has been collected will take time.

And here’s the thing about time: whether or not we write a strategic plan and commit to an intentional future, the future will come. So let’s spend the time that will pass getting creative and continuing the work of discernment about our future together. And we’ll all continue living our lives and learning how to make the most of what is right in front of us as we plan for our future.

I’m looking forward to what lies ahead. I’m excited for the changing leaves, more Church Table Talks, the Blessing of the Animals service, Reformation Sunday, and Christmas Eve. There’s much to look forward to in the coming months! Here’s to a safe and fun Fall at First Presbyterian Church of Glen Cove!

Peace,
Pastor Lance (they/them/he/him)
Upcoming Events & News
Church Table Talks are continuing through the Fall!

We have loved having these different opportunities to worship in new ways this summer. By popular demand, we're continuing Church Table Talks every second Sunday of the month this Fall. Let us know if you have a topic you'd like to discuss!
Upcoming: Strategic Planning Task Force

The task force we're putting together will review the recommendations provided to us by Jill White from our Visioning process. Ultimately, the task force will work over the next few months to write a strategic plan with input from the church community. We know that people are busy so we plan on taking this process nice and slow to prevent burnout. If you'd like to be part of the task force, please let Pastor Lance know.
Blessing of the Animals Sunday, September 19th at 10 AM

We are so excited to welcome and bless your pets (and any animals in attendance, we suppose!) during worship on Sunday the 19th. Bring your friends and a childlike spirit!
Mollie knows how to process change slowly and thoughtfully (and rest well). Let's be like Mollie as we go about our strategic plan!
Adult Education paused until September 12th

We look forward to its return! We'll continue reading Diane Butler Bass' Christianity After Religion. For more information, contact Betty Ann Roel.

Social Media Series On "Pray Away" Documentary

We imagine that some of you have heard about the "Pray Away" documentary on Netflix, which focuses on the pain of people who have been through conversion therapy or taught harmful - even deadly - theologies about sexual orientation and gender identity in the Christian tradition. We're a few posts into our social media series on our Facebook and Instagram pages with some quotes and themes that strike us. It is an important documentary, and we know that it hits too close to home for many of us, so this is an opportunity either to supplement or engage more sparingly with the content.
On a blue and white background, there is white sans serif font that says "Give" and there are two hands, one of which is passing coins to the other.
Online giving

We are connected to an online giving center for churches called tithe.ly. You can give a one-time gift or set up a recurring gift by clicking here.

Please also consider giving memorial flowers so that we can add more beauty to our services. You can sign up by clicking here.

Looking to pledge?

Why does pledging matter? Pledging helps us develop a realistic financial picture and plan our ministries for the year ahead. When you pledge, you're letting us know what you're planning to give for the whole year (not each week or month). Whatever amount you can commit to will help!

Click here to fill out your pledge form.
Looking for info on the Covid-19 vaccine?

Everyone over the age of 16 is now eligible to get the vaccine, and many places have walk-in appointments. If you need help finding a location, please let us know, and if you feel nervous or unsure about getting it, we encourage you to ask friends and family members the reasons why they have taken it.
We are incredibly grateful to all of the frontline workers and researchers who are making vaccination distribution possible. Here's to a new future!
