Next Month: Our September Meeting

Finding Calm Amid the Turbulence

September 24, 7 pm

Many PFLAG members are feeling anxiety given the stressful and uncertain political moment we live in. Let's talk about ways to handle this stress. We have invited some expert facilitator-coaches to guide us as we think about and share ideas for practices that may help keep us grounded and calm so that we can support and care for ourselves and others.

Oakland Pride Parade

Sunday, September 8, 10:15 am

Join Us And Get Your Free PFLAG T-Shirt!

We will have a PFLAG Oakland-East Bay contingent in the Oakland Pride Parade and we invite you to join us! We will meet in Downtown Oakland at 10:15 am; the Parade officially starts at 11 am. This is a fun low-key event, just a few blocks long, where we share our LGBTQ+ pride with the local community, and it's very family friendly.

This year, our chapter is offering free PFLAG t-shirts to everyone who registers to march with us. Sign up to attend and order your t-shirts here.

California Action Opportunity:

Californians, join us in Thanking Governor Newsom for signing the SAFETY Act into law.

The SAFETY Act is the first law in the country to ban harmful forced outing policies in schools. Send the Governor a thank you for protecting LGBTQ+ kids!

PFLAG National and 19 California PFLAG chapters (including PFLAG Oakland-East Bay) endorsed the bill.

In the News: Positive Developments

New Title IX rules go into effect in 24 states, DC, and Puerto Rico. On August 1st, new Title IX rules which explicitly protect LGBTQ+ youth from harassment and discrimination in schools by prohibiting sex discrimination went into effect in the 24 states in which the rule hasn’t been blocked by federal courts. PFLAG National strongly supports the rule.

Calling All Grandparents of LGBTQ+ Grandkids!

Last month PFLAG National launched a support program just for grandparents - PFLAG Connects. Grandparent Community. Sixty-minute meetings will take place the last Monday of each month at 5 pm Pacific Time, 8 pm Eastern Time. Advance registration is required.

As with all PFLAG support groups, there are no dues, fees, or membership required to join. For the PFLAG Connects: Grandparent Community meeting, anyone who is a grandparent of an LGBTQ+ person is welcome to attend.
