League Leader Lunch: Saturday, September 30


Please join League leaders from around the state at the annual League Leader Lunch. We will discuss the effect of climate change on our water supply, PFAS and what it means for your community’s drinking water, and what local Leagues are doing to solve the problem. We are pleased to welcome Katharine Lange, Policy Director of the Massachusetts Rivers Alliance, as our featured speaker. The location is the Harvard Unitarian Universalist Church in Harvard, MA, and the time is 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Light breakfast and lunch will be served. Please RSVP here

Day on the Hill Wednesday, October 11



It’s time to act together and raise our collective voice on Beacon Hill. Please join us for  Act for the FutureVoting, Maternal Health, Firearms, and PFAS, on Wednesday, October 11, from 9:30 AM to 12 noon at the Massachusetts State House. Day on the Hill is the League’s own lobby day each legislative session. Your advocacy this session has already led to victories for LWVMA policy priorities. Read more.

Gun Violence Prevention Advocacy Day September 13



Join us on Wednesday, September 13, at 10:30 am at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul, 138 Tremont Street in Boston, for a Gun Violence Prevention Lobby Day. Led by the Massachusetts Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence, Stop Handgun Violence, Moms Demand Action, GIFFORDS, and Brady, we will show the legislature how gun violence prevention has widespread support throughout the Commonwealth. Join us for the three-part webinar series What’s Up with Offshore Wind? Current Status – Future Plans – Getting It Done, as we take a deep dive into the Northeast’s offshore wind industry. End Life Without Parole Event September 20



LWVMA supports the Campaign to End Life Without Parole. Join us at Where There Is People There is Power event on Wednesday, September 20, from 12 noon – 2:00 PM at the State House. This event is sponsored by the Campaign to End Life without Parole and We Are Joint Venture in collaboration with The Harriet Tubman Project and Mass Second Look. Read more.

Meet the Specialist Series



LWVMA’s Meet the Specialist program offers members the chance to learn about the bills we support in a topic area. Join Children and Families legislative specialist Palma McLaughlin on Thursday, September 14 at 7 PM via Zoom to learn about LWVMA’s support of bills to prevent domestic violence, child abuse, and caring for the Commonwealth’s most vulnerable families. Read more.

Indigenous Legislative Agenda recording available 



LWVMA supports four goals outlined by the MA Indigenous Legislative agenda: to remove racist mascots, honor Indigenous People’s Day, celebrate and teach Native American cultures and history, and support the education and future of Native youth. Felina Silver Robinson of LWV Brookline shared her personal experience demonstrating why passage of these bills is essential. Read more.

Add your opinion on the official state seal and flag



Would you like to offer your opinion on the redesign of the state flag and seal? The Special Commission on the Official Seal and Motto of the Commonwealth is soliciting feedback through a survey designed by UMass Boston. Complete the survey by the November deadline here.

Application for LWVMA Reparations Study Committee: Please apply by September 8



A study about reparations was recommended by the LWVMA board and adopted by delegates at the 2023 LWVMA Convention in June. The LWVMA board will appoint a Study Committee to focus on this issue with a goal to finish the work over the next two years. Jeanne Morrison, Co-President of LWV Cape Cod Area and Susan Millinger, a Steering Committee member of LWV Amherst will co-chair this study. Democracy at Risk Presentation 


The Unitarian Universalist Church and the League of Women Voters of Marblehead are co-sponsoring a discussion, “Democracy at Risk,” with author Nancy MacLean on Monday, September 11 at 7 PM. Nancy MacLean is the author of the award-winning book Democracy in Chains that examines the strategic campaign of the radical right to dismantle our government, eliminate unions, suppress voting, privatize education, stop action on climate change, and alter the Constitution. National Voter Registration Day  - September 19



Click HERE to sign up as a partner for National Voter Registration Day, 2023! And please send Brynne any photos from your voter registration efforts so we can amplify those efforts on social media. LWVMA is working on a state-wide “free drawing” in conjunction with Voter Registration Day – for any students who are interested in joining the League (membership is free for students!), they will have the chance to win a prize. Read more.

The quarterly Town Hall on the forthcoming structural changes to membership (these changes were approved at the LWVUS Convention in June, 2022) which was scheduled for Tuesday, August 22 at 6:30 p.m., has been postponed to a date in late September/early October. Please stay tuned for more details about the new date and time.
