A beautiful new elementary and middle school opened Monday, August 26 in Cedar City. We have all watched in amazement over the last six months as the former livestock building across from the cemetery on Main Street was transformed into a new school.
The “Sheep Shed,” as we used to call it, was built in the 60s as a community center and livestock barn for the annual livestock sale during the fall county fair. I remember going to several dances there during that time. I remember once wearing green hip hugger, bell bottom, corduroy pants, and a bright silk shirt. Can you imagine me in such a garb? Don’t think too much about that look, please.
My third son, Mike Green, with his Wife Emily and their five children were approached by the charter school last winter about rebuilding it into a Charter School.
At that time, the roof was repaired, and the floor in the back was poured. It had apparent potential. Everyone loved the look of the roof from the inside.
A school, however, is an extremely complicated construction project. An engineer/architect was hired and the fun and frustration started. With only 5 months to build the school, every available person was employed. Vertically every member of my family has jumped in. Mike, Emily, Phillip and all the rest have set aside the other work to contribute full effort.
It has been a joy in my life to be asked to help. I drive forklifts, dump trucks, skid steer, tractor and other equipment. Many long hours were spent and slowly but steadily the building came to life. The deadline was met and on August 23, the ribbon was cut and school began on August 26, right on schedule. The school has grades K-8. And includes a gym, a band music room, an art room and a stage. The grounds are covered with artificial turf and many trees and shrubs on a drip system. It looks beautiful.
The inside roof is still the highlight and is beautiful. Every classroom has a part of the glulam beam and wood roof. The building is well-lit and heated and cooled by heat pumps. The makeup air system is amazing. There is five miles of computer cable in the building. Everything is high-tech. The glass panel on the east side provides a beautiful view of the golf course and the red hill.
Thank you, Mike and all the crew, for your talent and vision and for providing this fantastic addition to our community on Main Street for many years. Wishing all the new students at APA and others in Iron County School a great school year ahead!
