Mayor's Message

"Welcome American Preparatory Academy"

A beautiful new elementary and middle school opened Monday, August 26 in Cedar City. We have all watched in amazement over the last six months as the former livestock building across from the cemetery on Main Street was transformed into a new school.

The “Sheep Shed,” as we used to call it, was built in the 60s as a community center and livestock barn for the annual livestock sale during the fall county fair. I remember going to several dances there during that time. I remember once wearing green hip hugger, bell bottom, corduroy pants, and a bright silk shirt. Can you imagine me in such a garb? Don’t think too much about that look, please.

My third son, Mike Green, with his Wife Emily and their five children were approached by the charter school last winter about rebuilding it into a Charter School.

At that time, the roof was repaired, and the floor in the back was poured. It had apparent potential. Everyone loved the look of the roof from the inside.

A school, however, is an extremely complicated construction project. An engineer/architect was hired and the fun and frustration started. With only 5 months to build the school, every available person was employed. Vertically every member of my family has jumped in. Mike, Emily, Phillip and all the rest have set aside the other work to contribute full effort.

It has been a joy in my life to be asked to help. I drive forklifts, dump trucks, skid steer, tractor and other equipment. Many long hours were spent and slowly but steadily the building came to life. The deadline was met and on August 23, the ribbon was cut and school began on August 26, right on schedule. The school has grades K-8. And includes a gym, a band music room, an art room and a stage. The grounds are covered with artificial turf and many trees and shrubs on a drip system. It looks beautiful.

The inside roof is still the highlight and is beautiful. Every classroom has a part of the glulam beam and wood roof. The building is well-lit and heated and cooled by heat pumps. The makeup air system is amazing. There is five miles of computer cable in the building. Everything is high-tech. The glass panel on the east side provides a beautiful view of the golf course and the red hill.

Thank you, Mike and all the crew, for your talent and vision and for providing this fantastic addition to our community on Main Street for many years. Wishing all the new students at APA and others in Iron County School a great school year ahead!

-Mayor Garth O. Green

EXCITING PLAYGROUND

IMPROVEMENTS AT PARK DISCOVERY COMING SOON

In August, a general concept was approved by the City Council for Park Discovery playground improvements.

As one of the most beloved and community-inspired parks in Cedar City, we recognize that improvements are necessary to keep visitors safe and to uphold the integrity of the playground materials.

The park was designed and funded by community members in 2001. At that time, we were able to build an amazing playground with money and materials that were community-supported.

The RAP Tax (Recreation, Arts, and Parks), initiated by voters several years later, has become a funding source made available from a 0.1% local option sales tax and will bring forth upgraded play equipment.

The new playground will maintain the sense of discovery in an open space concept while being fully funded by the RAP Tax. Many beloved park amenities will remain, such as the dinosaur dig area, amphitheater, and hieroglyphic wall.

It will also feature ADA-compliant amenities, making it accessible and safer for all. The playground is expected to begin construction this fall and will last a few months, weather dependent.

ANNUAL CEMETERY RENOVATIONS UNDERWAY

In 2023, our cemetery began a renovation project to better accommodate visitors and the future of the cemetery. Over the next few years, every occupied area of the cemetery grounds from the south to the north will undergo renovations during the fall months to provide visitors with wider and more efficient roadways, including curbs and gutters, additional on-site parking, better flow of traffic, and modern irrigation throughout. Visitors will still be able to visit, but may experience some re-routing or equipment on site. Thank you for your patience!
