These Medications Can Make It Harder

Walking Just 4,000 Steps a Day May Lower Dementia Risk

Taking as many steps as you can in a day by walking or doing other physical activities offers many health benefits, like preventing heart disease, lowering blood pressure, and relieving stress.


According to a new study published in JAMA Neurology, your daily step count may offer some protection against dementia. The researchers found that walking between 3,800 steps and 9,800 steps daily may help lower a person’s risk for cognitive decline. Click here for the full article.

A particular smell might play an important role in Alzheimer's treatment

Imagine a future where the smell of menthol could alleviate some of the worst symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease. This might sound like science fiction, but innovative new research is making it a potential reality.


Scientists have discovered that when mice with Alzheimer’s inhaled menthol, their cognitive abilities improved. This unexpected finding highlights a potential new avenue for treating this debilitating condition.

Memory Care vs Assisted Living

Aging and independence may not go hand-in-hand for many adults, particularly those with dementia. Long-term care facilities, such as assisted living and memory care, however, can help fill the gaps for adults who may be experiencing cognitive impairment or even those who need assistance with daily tasks.

Ohio's Golden Buckeye Program

Still Offers Savings for Seniors and People with Disabilities

The Golden Buckeye Program, operated by the Ohio Department of Aging, entitles seniors and people with disabilities to discounts on goods and services, including food, entertainment, and travel, at participating businesses around Ohio. Ohio residents with a state ID card receive a Golden Buckeye card in the mail upon turning 60, and those ages 18 to 59 who have disabilities can also apply.

Encouraging Older Adults to Use Active and Public Transportation


Local governments and organizations have a big role to play in transportation, and there are many ways they can make it easier for people to stay active as they grow older. Below are three stories about removing obstacles for seniors so that they can utilize more active and public transportation and become more involved as both mobility and climate advocates.

Toledo on Track: Disability and Aging-Friendly Rail


The Ability Center, Northwest Ohio's nonprofit Center for Independent Living (CIL) has identified transportation as an important issue that affects what access individuals with a disability have to the community. So the Ability Center has created the "Disability and Aging Rail Coalition" (DARC) to advocate for creating more accessible passenger rail service to serve Northwest Ohio, using federal infrastructure funds made available the past few years. The DARC post is on the website of All Aboard Ohio, another statewide rail advocacy organization.

Activities for a Healthy Brain As We Age

Featured Game: All About Us

All About Us box, board, cards and game pieces


All About Us is a cooperative, life-story-telling board game in which all players share their stories and explore their lives with each other.


This game can help people with dementia in many ways.


It helps them connect with, and recall, positive memories. It sparks conversations, thus promoting quality time with family, friends, and caregivers across all generations - helping the person with dementia feel less lonely. And having other players show interest in the opinions and experiences of that person helps boost their morale and self-esteem.
