Golf for Education in Support of Workforce Development on Sept. 29
WNC Foundation's Golf for Education 18-hole team scramble is set for Friday, Sept. 29, at Toiyabe Golf Club. The 24th annual tournament supports workforce development in the region and gives members of the community the opportunity to help students with financial need earn the certifications essential to acquiring meaningful employment and support Nevada's growing economy. The tournament has reached capacity for team entries, but businesses and community members can still donate and purchase raffle tickets.
Manufacturing Open House on Oct. 10
Learn more about Western Nevada College's manufacturing program during Manufacturing Month on Tuesday, Oct. 10. Meet faculty members, discover the college's new technology, tour the facilities and have your questions answered during this 3-5 p.m. event in the Donald W. Reynolds Center for Technology.
Continuing Ed Taking Proposals from Community for Creative Classes
The Continuing Education Department at Western Nevada College is seeking proposals for Community Education courses from January through June 2024. The program is looking for folks who can help meet the needs of our community for skills and knowledge in a way that inspires learning. The program loves creative ideas — maybe you can teach a Bob Ross style watercolor class, or you have the key to surviving the zombie apocalypse, or maybe you really do know how to do underwater basket weaving. Whatever it is, if you’re ready to share it with the community, Continuing Ed wants to hear from you by Oct. 2!

Western Nevada College has been recognized as one of the best colleges in the nation to work for, according to the Great Colleges to Work For® program. Special recognition for the college came in three categories: Mission and Pride, Supervisor/Department Chair Effectiveness and Confidence in Senior Leadership.
Stevens Takes Next Step in Higher Ed Career as Academic Advising Director
Lauren Stevens has been counseling students at WNC for more than a decade. As the new director of Academic Advising and Access she’ll have the added responsibility of leading a team of counselors, advisors, mentors and coordinators in Student Services who serve current and potential students.
Career Fair Brings Students and Local Businesses Together on Campus
Western Nevada College and area high school students participated in the ROADS Workforce Career Fair and Workshop on Sept. 13 on the Carson City campus. Students gained valuable skills networking with local business leaders. They practiced their interview skills, developed or improved their resumés and discovered new career opportunities.
Dr. Ryan, Holt Accept Adult Education and Family Literacy Week Proclamation from Board of Supervisors
Western Nevada College Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs Dr. Dana Ryan and Director of College and Career Readiness Angela Holt accepted the National Adult Education Family Literacy Week proclamation that Carson City Mayor Lori Bagwell presented to the Board of Supervisors on Sept. 21 in the Bob Crowell Board Room at the Carson City Community Center.

Nevada Promise Scholarship Deadline for High School Seniors is Oct. 31
Western Nevada College is part of a group of Nevada System of Higher Education community colleges that is continuing to offer the Nevada Promise Scholarship funded by the Nevada State Legislature. The catch is that Nevada high school seniors graduating in spring 2024 must apply for the scholarship no later than Oct. 31, 2023, to receive this fortuitous and opportunistic pathway into higher education.

WNC Foundation and the Financial Aid Office are encouraging students to apply for the William N. Pennington Career and Technical Education Scholarship for 2023-24. This generous scholarship enables CTE students to learn valuable skills to enter Nevada’s diverse workforce.
One Auto Repair Job Leads to Career Pathway Change for WNC Student
Jose Fausto Hernandez’s passion for auto mechanics started in a practical way that develops when owning a first car. For Fausto Hernandez, it was when the window regulator stopped working on his Chevrolet Impala. A local repair shop estimated that it would cost $300 to replace, and Fausto Hernandez thought he could fix it for a lot less. As it turned out, Fausto Hernandez saved more than 33 percent on the repair work by doing it himself. Ever since then, he’s been interested in auto mechanics.

What a welcoming week it was! WNC students participated in various activities and enjoyed free lunches and breakfasts during the 2023 Fall Welcome Back Week Sept. 11-14 in the Dini Student Center. Some of the activities included jewelry making, rock painting, DIY buttons, DIY plushies, DIY fuse beads, Mario Party, volleyball, and more. 
Joe Dini, Beck Libraries Provide Students with Means to Succeed
Helping students succeed is a mission that WNC doesn't take lightly. Take Joe Dini Library, for instance. In addition to numerous academic resources provided by the library on the Carson City campus, it is open 63 1/2 hours per week this semester. Beck Library on the Fallon campus is open five days for 45 hours per week this semester, providing students with the resources and the study space for academic success.
Reminder: Fall 2023 Graduation Application Deadline Is Nov. 1
Students on track to graduate with a degree or certificate this fall need to apply for graduation by Wednesday, Nov. 1. Check with your adviser for eligibility. For information, visit wnc.edu/graduation.

Interim NSHE Chancellor Patty Charlton Meets Students during Campus Visit
New Nevada System of Higher Education Chancellor Patty Charlton visited with Western Nevada Colleges students during Wildcat Life's Welcome Back Week activities. Charlton is serving as interim chancellor for NSHE after the departure of Acting Chancellor Dale Erquiaga. She is a former administrator at College of Southern Nevada.
Great Basin Natives' Artwork Featured in Bristlecone Main Gallery Exhibit
Capital City Arts Initiative has brought together the talents of many Great Basin Native artists this fall at Western Nevada College. This collection of working baskets and contemporary art titled “It Started with Willows” is showing in Bristlecone Main Gallery through Dec. 21. The exhibit is open to the public Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the Carson City campus.
Welcome New Employee Nate Jersey
WNC is pleased to announce the appointment of Nate Jersey to its Advancement Team. With a strong background in nonprofit work at Beken Holdings and Nevada Urban Indians Inc., along with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Substance Abuse/Policy from the University of Nevada, Reno, and a Master's degree in Criminal Justice Administration from American Public University, Nate brings a wealth of knowledge and a deep commitment to student success within community college settings.
Conrad Serves on Panel Discussing CTE's Role for People with Records
Deb Conrad, Prison Education & Apprenticeship Program Director at Western Nevada College, recently served on a panel discussing the role of Career Technical Education in preparing people with records for the workforce at the 77th Correctional Education Association International Conference & Training Event in Portland, Ore.
VRC Pays Tribute to 9-11 Victims with First Annual Stair Climb Challenge
The Veterans Resource Center remembered those who lost their lives in the 9-11 World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks 22 years ago, with the first annual Stair Climb Challenge that tested the endurance and stamina of entrants. It appeared that WNC President Dr. J. Kyle Dalpe would take the title until student veteran Leo Triglia took first place with 213 floors scaled in about 20 minutes.
Willy Has A Memorable Birthday Bash
Students, President Dr. J. Kyle Dalpe, faculty, staff and Willow made sure Willy experienced an awesome birthday on Sept. 19. They posed for Polaroid pictures with the Western Nevada College mascot, played games, wrote birthday wishes and ate cake in the Dini Student Center.
