Madison Station Quilt Guild, Secretary’s Report
General Membership Meeting, August 10th, 2023
Location: St Matthew’s Episcopal Church, 786 Hughes Road, Madison, AL 35758
Attendance: 50 members, 7 visitors
Call-to Order: Meeting was started at 6:33 pm by President David O’Dell
Old Business:
· A motion to approve the July meeting minutes was made, seconded and approved.
· Sonya reminded the guild of the upcoming Madison Street Festival which is an opportunity to display quilts and provide community outreach.
· Paint Chip Challenge Updates: Susan and Leigh provided additional information regarding the challenge. Entry forms are available via a link in the Newsletter and some paper copies are available. Entry forms most be submitted no later than the October 12th guild meeting. Drop-off for challenge entries will be on Wednesday November 8th at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church. There will be prizes for the winners of the challenge categories. Cost of admission for non-members will be $5. Bake sale items will be available and donated baked goods can be coordinated with Patricia Morgan.
· Barb’s Sewing Center has a new store location with a bigger classroom and more fabrics.
· Table rental donations from the Garage Sale event were given to the church for Mission to Kenya art therapy projects.
· Three-yard quilt kits are still available for charity quilt projects.
· Reminder that quilting/sewing items in good condition and hand made items are needed for our booth at the HQH quilt show coming up in March. A few examples of possible items include pin cushions, bowl cozies, quilts, etc.
New Business:
· The nominating committee for the 2024 board has been formed and includes: David O’Dell, Sue Bartlow, Kris Smith, Tom Ramby, Donna Daniel and Sandra Jeffers. Those interested in being on the boards can contact a member of the committee.
· Robin from Sweet Home Quilting let us know about a flood that occurred at her shop. There is a sale on both washed and dried fabrics as well as non-water damaged bolts. Also, there is a hand sew day at Sweet Home Quilting on Mondays.
· Donation gifts:
o Three (3) members received thank you gifts including gift cards provided by Southern Charm Quilting, Barb’s Sewing Center, and Sweet Home Quilting.
o Three (3) donation thank you gifts were awarded each including a pattern, fabric and a pattern box of HST blocks.
· Diane shared details of her visit to the Annual Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show where over 1500 quilts are displayed all over the town and numerous classes are available.
· Two of our members recently won awards: Judy Balance for the Heritage Challenge and Sue Bartlow won staff pick for the Cherrywood Challenge.
Speaker: Patricia Morgan presented an informative talk on English Paper Piecing including a brief history, helpful tools, technique tips and numerous beautiful examples for inspiration. Next month’s speaker will be Patty Murphy. She will also be hosting a class called Bluegrass for intermediate to advanced quilters. The class will be on September 15th and the cost is $30. Show-and-Tell: Eight members shared fourteen quilt projects.
