Growing a Healthy Childhood
|
In partnership with Child Care Aware NW, and Viva Farms, we provided training and materials for implementing Harvest for Healthy Kids, and a monthly box of local produce to 42 family-run childcare sites serving 480 children. Most of the childcare locations also chose to receive a free garden box kit with everything they needed to grow a small garden. This project made a real difference in the amount of time children spent outdoors, and increased their willingness to try new healthy foods. Check out this infographic to learn more about this LSPAN-funded program.

- Setting up and staffing our Farmers Market booths
- Coordinating programs and field trips with the Sedro-Woolley Boys and Girls Club

“[My favorite part] was the connection with people and the plants, after being locked away during Covid, it’s been hard finding a real connection with things and this has helped so much.” -Sierra, Teen Program Assistant 2023

Our Engaged Youth and Communities pillar and BHCC (Burlington Healthy Community Coalition) representatives were delighted to meet families at the Burlington-Edison Back to School Fair! Concrete Prevention Posse Rocks!
Concrete youth and adults came together August 15 to kick off the Concrete Prevention Posse’s (CPP) plan for the upcoming school year. The CPP is a youth coalition that brings 7-12 grade students together to work toward improving their community. These awesome students will work on projects that promote alcohol, tobacco, and other drug prevention education; support mental and physical wellbeing; and offer connections with peers and caring adults. Seven youths, together with three adults, attended this meeting and will work throughout the year to create the positive changes they want to see. Interested in joining? Preparing Teens for the Workplace and Beyond
This year, we partnered with NW ESD 189 to provide summer employment to three high school students in our Farm to School program through their Pre-Employment Transition Services.
In addition to the work performed as part of their job duties, all of our Farm-to-School Teen Program Assistants learn important job skills such as how to write a cover letter and resume, how to work together as a team, communicate effectively with co-workers, and engage with the public as an organization representative.
| |
Some of our past Farm-to-School Teen Program Assistants have gone on to:
- Attend university
- Complete their AA degrees
- Join the Military
- Obtain local jobs as a result of their Farm-to-School connections
|
What our High School Program Assistants say about their experience...
“I learned that it is okay to ask for help. From peers or from the adults. I love working with my team to get tough jobs done. Not to mention, the produce we grow is delicious! I love bringing it home to my family.”
“I think [this program] will help me with my next job- being prepared, having confidence, and independence. [Farm to School] is important to me because it’s a community.”
