Car-Free MSP Is Here!


In honor of World Car-Free Day on September 22, 2022, partner organizations Anoka County Commute SolutionsCommuter ServicesMetro TransitMove Minneapolis and Move Minnesota are teaming up to promote opportunities, resources, and events to go car-free and connect to the community with Car-Free MSP!

 

World Car-Free Day aims to create awareness and educate communities about alternatives to driving alone. Launched in Spain in 1996, World Car-Free Day is observed in 1,500 cities and more than 40 countries. 

 

Throughout September 2022, partner organizations will be promoting opportunities, events, and resources for individuals to learn about how to get around without a car and to experience car-free spaces in their communities. Go completely car-free all day on Thursday, September 22, 2022 and join evening community celebrations to connect with other participants.

Car-Free Commuter Pledge


Pledge to do at least one car-free commute to work any day from September 1st – September 22nd, 2022 and be entered into a drawing to win prizes such as a Go-To card or an e-scooter!

Share Your Car-Free Story!


Share your story on social media or by email on how you replaced a car trip anywhere, anytime between September 1st and September 22nd, and be eligible to win a number of prizes, including a new electric bike! Replaced trips can be to and from anywhere you might have traveled by car.

Commuting 101 - Bus (BRT) and Walking Tours

As part of Car-Free MSP, Move Minneapolis is hosting two “Commuting 101” tours. These guided tours are designed for commuters to explore and experience transportation options available to them in downtown Minneapolis. Feel free to join one or both tours!

Tour # 1: METRO Orange Line Bus Rapid Transit Tour 


Thursday, September 8th

12 – 1 pm

 

Metro Transit’s bus rapid transit (BRT) network is designed to connect the Twin Cities with frequent service and faster trips in our region’s busiest bus corridors. Experience BRT for yourself on this tour, featuring a FREE ride on the METRO Orange Line BRT bus from downtown to the beautiful new Lake Street Transit Station and back.


Participants will receive a complimentary Go To card for the bus tour.

Tour # 2: Walking Tour of Downtown Transportation Infrastructure  

Thursday, September 8th

2 – 3 pm

 

This hour-long walking tour explores new infrastructure projects and options for downtown commuters. The tour will cover a nearly mile-long loop in downtown Minneapolis.  

 

Some Walking Tour Highlights: 

  • Dedicated bus lane on 7th Street 
  • Bi-directional protected bike lane on 4th Street 
  • Downtown EV charging stations 
  • ABC Ramps Mobility Hub

Mill City Farmers Market


Move Minneapolis will be at the Mill City Farmers Market on the morning of September 10th. The market along the river is one of the busiest destinations that folks choose to attend car-free. Sit on the steps and watch folks arrive on foot over the Stone Arch Bridge or fly by on their bike down the river road. Find Move Minneapolis and Nice Ride at the Mill City Farmers Market! Explore all the fresh produce you can bring home, while replacing a car-trip to the grocery store. The Move Minneapolis experts will be there to show off grocery packing tips and offering free Nice Ride test rides! 

World Car-Free Day @ Dual Citizen


The month of Car-Free MSP culminates in World Car-Free Day on September 22nd. Join the local celebration on the evening of September 22nd at Dual Citizen Brewing Company at 5pm! Hosted by Move Minnesota and Move Minneapolis, the event will be an opportunity to share stories and celebrate accomplishments of car-free trips while enjoying free food provided by Move Minnesota and Move Minneapolis, with drinks available to purchase from Dual Citizen! Join the party to show the world that the Twin Cities are going car-free.

In Case You Missed It: Watch the Residential Pass Webinar

Last month Molly Burns-Hansen, Programs Coordinator at Move Minnesota, and Michael Krantz, Program Manager at Metro Transit's Office of Transit Oriented Development joined Move Minneapolis for a discussion of the Metro Transit's popular  Residential Pass program.


Residential Pass is a deeply discounted unlimited use transit pass designed specifically for multifamily developments of 10 units or more. Through this unique program, properties that purchase one pass per unit in a building will be eligible to purchase the transit passes for $14 per month/pass, which is an 88% discount from the full price of $120 per month for each pass.
