COE Conference

Barrio Logan College Institute staff and students attended the Council For Opportunity in Education (COE) annual conference at the Hilton Bayfront in San Diego last week, where BLCI was selected as a community partner and recipient of school supplies and donations from attendees.

Before the conference began, ten BLCI Upward Bound students met DeWanda Wise, the actor who plays Kayla Watts in the movie Jurassic World Dominion, to learn more about her life and trajectory to get to where she is today.

To open the conference, Barrio Logan senior Diana Garcia wow'd the crowd by performing the national anthem in Spanish:

BLCI's involvement continued through the conference, as ten staff members volunteered to assist in the workshop rooms. Two members of BLCI's C-Suite, Sara Boquin and Cristina Aguirre also lead a workshop of their own, titled "Applying Strategic Thinking for Professional Advancement."

As the conference wrapped up, another BLCI student stepped into the spotlight. Jayden Fernandez, a ninth grader, shared with the crowd of more than 2,000 people about the impact of their gifts to BLCI.

BLCI Staff Goes Golfing

Members of BLCI's Development Team attended Life Science Cares' Mini Golf For Good fundraiser where they had the opportunity to share BLCI's mission with attendees of the event and other nonprofit partners.

LSC partners with life science companies in the San Diego community to support nonprofits like BLCI in their work toward ending poverty. The event was packed with several people dressed in costumes in their team's theme ready to play for a good cause.

Life Science Cares continues to support BLCI's efforts and even dedicated a hole on the golf course to us!

Kicking Off the School Year

BLCI El Cajon's soccer team had their first scrimmage of the new academic year. The El Cajon site lives by the motto, "Soccer is the hook. College is the goal."

Staff use activities like soccer to add fun to students' education and the resources they get from BLCI El Cajon.

Students said the scrimmage motivated them to try hard to win and taught them how to communicate and work together as a team.

All of the coaches attended to support the students as well as parents who cheered the students on from the sidelines.

The team won 3-1, and the students were excited to represent BLCI El Cajon!

Seniors Get Ready for College Applications

BLCI Chula Vista seniors had the first session of the College Success Program Bootcamp that helps students with the college application process. The bootcamp covered details and timelines as well as application expectations and the resources provided to help them.

Students came ready with questions as they're both nervous and excited to start their UC applications! They made good progress by the end of the session, and are now eager to finish their Personal Insight Questions and apply to college.
