Assessing, Addressing and Overcoming Vaccine Hesitancy and Barriers to Increase Vaccine Rates in the I/DD Community
Approximately 61 million adults living with in the U.S. have a disability, representing approximately 26 percent of the adult population. People with disabilities may have an increased risk for contracting COVID-19 for various reasons. In addition, many people with disabilities have underlying health conditions (e.g. diabetes, heart disease, and obesity) that increases the risk of severe illness due to COVID-19. Despite the authorization and availability of three vaccines to prevent infection with SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, the scientific data on vaccine safety and efficacy, and the known risks of severe illness and death associated with COVID-19, vaccine hesitancy remains a significant barrier to vaccination utilization.
Starting in October, Support Coordinators will discuss vaccine status during their monthly monitoring phone calls to individuals, families, and providers. Participation in answering the questions is voluntary. The questions are geared to understand the reasons for non-vaccination and provide education, if needed.

Pfizer Booster Now Available
If you are 65 or older, a long-term care resident, an adult with underlying medical conditions, or an adult at increased risk of COVID-19 exposure because of your job, you are now eligible for a Pfizer booster shot, at least six months after your second Pfizer shot.

Vaccine appointments can be made at any existing vaccination location without a prescription.

The CDC has announced they are evaluating the available data with urgency to make additional recommendations for people who got the Moderna or Johnson & Johnson vaccines, as well as for other groups of people.
Annual Flu Vaccine
Everyone six months of age and older is encouraged to get a flu vaccine every year. September and October are ideal times to be vaccinated against the flu.
It is likely that flu viruses and the virus that causes COVID-19 will both be spreading this fall and winter, making it more important than ever to get a flu vaccine. It is the best way to protect yourself and others – especially those who are particularly vulnerable to both COVID-19 and influenza such as older adults and those with chronic health conditions. Flu vaccines and COVID-19 vaccines may be given at the same time. Learn More
