SEPTEMBER 2020 PRESERVATION NEWS & EVENTS
BAKERHOSTETLER SPONSORS A CIVIL RIGHTS TRAIL MARKER
BakerHostetler made a surprise announcement at the Cleveland Restoration Society’s virtual Community Luncheon Connection event on Friday, September 11. The law firm pledged $10,000 to sponsor an Ohio Historical Marker on the African American Civil Rights Trail. The first of its kind in the North, the Trail will memorialize ten (10) sites in Cleveland that were significant to the Modern Civil Rights Movement (1954-1964) and the Second Revolution (1964-1976) and remain relevant today. Each site will be marked with an Ohio Historical Marker and supported by a dedicated website with in-depth content written by civil rights scholars.

There are 9 sponsorships left! We invite you to join BakerHostetler and the Cleveland Restoration Society in our efforts to reach our $100,000 fundraising goal in support of this worthy project. Your pledge may be satisfied over multiple years.

Your $10,000 sponsorship will fund:
  • The design, construction, and installation of one (1) Ohio Historical Marker at one (1) of the ten designated Civil Rights Trail sites
  • The cost to engage a scholar in writing the text for the marker and providing interpretive content on the dedicated Civil Rights Trail website.

You will receive special recognition:
  • As the sponsor of one (1) Ohio Historical Marker on the Civil Rights Trail website
  • At the installation ceremony of the Ohio Historical Marker supported by your sponsorship (including recognition in the opening remarks and in the program)
  • In the Cleveland Restoration Society’s Perspectives e-newsletter, Facade magazine, and on social media.

Sponsor a marker today and make history by preserving history.
For more information about this sponsorship opportunity, please contact Anne Doten at adoten@clevelandrestoration.org or 216-426-3109.

"It's just the right thing to do, to put them in these places," Crowther said. "It dignifies this part of our heritage and history."

SECTION OF MIDTOWN NOMINATED AS A NATIONAL REGISTER HISTORIC DISTRICT
A portion of MidTown was recently nominated to be added to The National Registry of Historic Places as a Historic District, joining other areas of Cleveland such as Public Square and Ohio City on this prestigious list.
The proposed Midtown Historic District includes Prospect, Euclid, and Chester, roughly bounded by E. 55th, E. 30th, Perkins Ave, and Carnegie Ave.

If approved at the Ohio Historic Site Preservation Advisory Board's September 18th meeting, the submission would then be sent to the U.S. Department of the Interior for a decision on the historic district.
NORTHEAST OHIO SUFFRAGE DRIVING TOUR
The driving tour aims to bring awareness to the achievements of the equal suffrage advocates native or local to northeast Ohio, as well as promote local tourism by encouraging the community to engage with northeast Ohio's historic sites and museums.

The tour was developed out of the Valiant Visionaries of the Vote trading cards that were to be dispersed early summer on "Suffrage Sundays" before the onset of the pandemic. Now, you can still travel to the sites in a safe manner by parking and viewing outdoor displays that feature each site's respective trading cards, and download digital copies of your own!

The tour will run through October 24, 2020 and is accompanied by a guidebook that can be found along with more information at www.neohiosuffrage.org/driving-tour.
