Introducing ASN Connect!
New Members Only Social Media Community
We listened to you and we will soon introduce an all-new social platform for members to connect online. Featuring a user-friendly interface, ASN Connect will become the social network for nutrition professionals!
With ASN Connect, we will provide an improved platform similar to other social media. ASN Connect will offer popular features such as the ability to create a personal profile; customize and sort your live feed; share links, photos, videos, and attachments in posts; engage with others’ posts by commenting or liking; search the directory of users; send direct messages; join one of 24 GEM's (Groups Engaging Members); receive notifications; view job postings, and more. It’s a robust tool that can be tailored to your preferences for an easy-to-use experience.
As a private network, ASN Connect is an ideal platform for sharing ASN members-only content, including webinars and networking opportunities. Within ASN Connect, you will have the ability to participate in your GEM private groups. With the same great features as the main ASN Connect community live feed, and with admin rights for their respective group leaders, GEM leaders can customize their group’s features to facilitate a unique community.
In addition, we are excited to announce exclusive access to the Nutrition 2020 LIVE ONLINE Community Activities recorded during ASN’s virtual meeting June 1-4, 2020. The following GEM members-only recordings will be available in their respective private GEM's on ASN Connect:
- Nutritional Epidemiology RIS Forum and Distinguished Nutritional Epidemiology Abstracts
- Nutritional Immunology and Inflammation RIS Forum
- Nutritional Microbiology RIS Forum: Hot Topic - Reflections of the Gut Microbiome in Host Molecular Phenotypes in Health and Disease (only the speaker’s presentation will be released and not the entire Forum recording)
- SIG Symposium: Demystifying the Early Career Trainee Mental Health Crisis
- Sports Nutrition and Human Performance RIS Forum: Hot Topic – A Thoughtful Examination of Protein Sources in Diet Design for Athletes
- Vitamins and Minerals RIS Forum

ASN Launches Nutrition Research Task Force
ASN has convened a Task Force to author a report that provides an overview of the current types, purposes, strengths, and limitations of the primary methodologies used in nutrition research. The report will discuss inherent challenges that exist when conducting nutrition research and the many considera-tions researchers must account for in nutrition studies. A secondary goal of the report is to help the public, media, and nutrition professionals better understand how to interpret and apply nutrition research. The Task Force kicked off their work with their first call in August 2020. View the list of Task Force members and learn more about this important project at https://nutrition.org/nutrition-research-task-force/

It has been two decades since new DRIs for vitamin A were published. Given the wealth of new information using new methods for assessing vitamin A status that are applicable to studies in children, and pregnant and lactating women, it is time to review and reassess the optimal intakes for vitamin A and its precursor carotenoids. This CDN Special Collection, Guest Edited by A. Catharine Ross, PhD of Pennsylvania State University, reviews what is known, and looks ahead to the next round of DRIs for this essential micronutrient.

The importance of using multisectoral engagement to combat non-communicable diseases (NCD) has been recognized in the Global Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of NCDs. The outcomes of a high-level stakeholder meeting held in Ghana are described here and demonstrate the feasibility of such an approach in population-level salt reduction intake in the country.

Advances in Nutrition (AN)
September 2020, 11(5)
Featured Articles:
-
When heated for deep frying, some polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA)-rich vegetable oils, such as rapeseed, soybean and sunflower oil, produce hydroxynonenal. T Yamashima et al. have concluded that “it is reasonable to pinpoint ω-6 PUFA-rich vegetable oil-derived ‘hydroxynonenal’ as the real culprit behind cell degeneration/death causing Alzheimer's disease and related lifestyle diseases.”
-
Reviewing 43 studies, which together included 3,552 participants, H Yarizadeh et al. found that aerobic training and resistance training are both effective methods to reduce subcutaneous abdominal fat. When aerobic and resistance training were directly compared, statistical significance was not observed. On the other hand, combining the two forms of exercise was more effective than either aerobic or resistance exercise alone.

Current Developments in Nutrition (CDN)
September 2020, 5(9)
Featured Article:
-
Pregnancy and lactation are critical life stages with special nutritional requirements for vitamin A. In this review, BM. Gannon et al. have assessed the evidence for vitamin A requirements during pregnancy and lactation since the Current Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) for vitamin A were published in 2001. According to the authors, “across studies of pregnant women, higher vitamin A intake and status are associated with lower risks of preeclampsia and clinical infection in mothers.” Nonetheless, “except in settings where vitamin A deficiency is a severe public health problem, vitamin A supplementation is not recommended to pregnant or lactating women for maternal or newborn outcomes.” The authors have, however, called for more research to address “limited data to quantify average requirements and identify important covariates to personalize intake recommendations.”
