This summer just whizzed by and the thrift shop was busier than ever. With folks traveling, it was "hairy" at times, but our hardworking members managed to keep the shop open as usual. To those members who signed up when

's calls for help went out...thank you, thank you, thank you!
Although we did not have any programs in the summer, the Program Committees have been very busy planning for the new school year.
Operation School Bell® scheduled their upcoming In-Store events and t-shirt uniform coordination for the year. Operation Wildlife has a new presentation thanks to member volunteer

. New members will be a welcome addition in helping out with school presentations. We Care, Tutu Tutorial and Share continue to thrive with

Melvin Ah Ching
has been working diligently for the last two months in transferring the Assistance League of Hawaii website to a new platform. The National Assistance League will be picking up the cost and provide technical support to the chapters. This website will be uniform and will promote the Assistance League brand. Members will be able to use their national login name and password to access the membership area of the Hawaii website. Mel is also updating information and developing new forms for the website which will be ready before the end of September.
During the summer we received a kind donation of $5,000 from
Doris Hillhouse
, a friend of our member,
Peggy Monell
. While visiting Peggy last year, Doris helped out at one of our Operation School Bell® events, was very moved by the experience, and wanted to enable us to clothe more keiki.
A big thank-you to
Dot Mason
for the $20,000 donation from the
George Mason Fund of the Hawaii Community Foundation
. Our programs will benefit greatly from this windfall, and we will be able to serve more deserving children and families.

September 12 Meeting at Outrigger Canoe Club
Assistance League of Hawaii's monthly meetings resume on
September 12, 2018.
Our first meeting for the new academic year will be held at the Outrigger Canoe Club (OCC).
Arden Moore
is our member volunteer host to the club. We will begin at 10.30 AM.
The menu options include:
Hamburger Sandwich with Coleslaw Half Mahimahi with Hapa Brown rice and vegetables Papaya with Curry Chicken Salad served with grapes
The meal includes coffee or iced tea, OCC's Famous Carrot Bread and Ice Cream.

Thanks to all who have sent in their $70 membership dues. If you have done so, you are officially a member of Assistance League of Hawaii for the 2018-2019 fiscal year.
If you need to be reimbursed for purchases you make for any of the programs or other management expenses, please be sure to have your committee chairman or a member of the Board of Directors sign the reimbursement form. Then place the form, with receipts attached, in the Treasurer's mail file in the Ohana Room.
Thanks to the generous donation made by our member Eileen Urquhart, sales of the items from her estate have generated $15,317, as of July 31. As per Eileen's request, these funds have been used to make additional principal payments to reduce the mortgage on our building. As of the end of July, the mortgage loan balance is down to $172,241. Woo-hoo!

helped with the early changes to the script as well. The presentation is great. Anyone who would like to see it should come to our meeting on September 5 at the Thrift Shop's Ohana Room starting at 1:00 p.m.

Program team members have gathered twice this summer, once for closet cleaning project and a work session for cleaning, retagging and repacking the biofacts. Myrtle Ching-Rappa made all the new animal name tags. Arden has been repairing the bear skulls and projects as they come up. Arden also made 10 inch chains for all our new animal tags. Andrea, Marge F, Charlee Martin and Kathy worked tirelessly on the biofacts cleaning, retagging and repacking.
We are ready for the schools!
We added new items to our display that includes a red fox skull, a rhea egg and two wallaby skins. A new ostrich egg is coming and the mongoose is now repaired.
The Waimea trip to the Big Island of Hawaii on September 25 - 27 is scheduled.

Thank you for helping with an In-Store Student Shopping Event in the past. I hope that you will be able to help, again.
We will meet at the parking lot entry to the store, near the Pharmacy at 7:30 am, on Sat., Sept. 15, to set up and get ready
This is also where 180 Kalihi children and their parents will Check-In, beginning at 8:00 am from Kalihi, Kalihi Waena, Ka'ewai Elementaries, and Central Middle School.
I will email a duty roster, prior to the day.
Please wear your blue shirts/white pants or Assistance League of Hawaii apron/white pants - Do not bring a purse. Put keys, etc. in pockets or 'fanny pack.'
Please email or call Margie ASAP if you will be able to help on Saturday, September 15.
(We need about 24 people.)
We will have lunch at Like Like Drive-In restaurant, across the street. Please join us.

A gentle reminder,
KWAK (Kokua With Aloha Kala), our annual fund raising event, partnered with Foodland, begins September 1st. You will be able to donate from $5.00 to $249. There will be more about this at our next meeting.

Member volunteer Mary Kay Junk purchased supply onsies, blankets, and diapers for a Lullaby Layette packing 9:30 to 11:30 on Friday, September 7 at my home (683 Iana St., Kailua, HI). Refreshments will be served. The layettes are for newborns and will be delivered to Adventist Health Castle, Kapi'olani Medical Center and Kaiser Moanalua. We pack about 250 layettes at each Lullaby Layette event. Call me at 285-5603 if you would like to help.
Activities in July and August included 100 one-way bus passes purchased by me and delivered to the Domestic Violence Action Center by my daughter, Joy. Member volunteer Mary Kay and I purchased and delivered household items to Hale Kipa for eight of their clients. Hale Kipa's clients are teens aging out of the Foster Care system. Each client is given up to $450 worth of household items. We donated sheets, towels, pots, pans, curtains, a microwave oven, rice cooker, toilet plunger and other items to this charity.
The We Care committee also delivered 80 Malama Bears to St. Francis Hospice in July.

| Our tutors are ready to go. Member volunteers Cathy Young and Joan Helbling are returning to Ala Wai Elementary School, Geri Johnson will be back at Fern Elementary and Marge Fabre will be checking out Pearlridge Elementary in September. Gloria McGehee-Koel, Carol Hasegawa and family totally reorganized Pu'uhale Elementary School Library over the summer. It looks great. We all start after Labor Day.
There are classes in need of your help. Please look over your schedules and volunteer to work with a student once a week or more.

Through our committee, renewal agreements have been sent out to numerous organizations. We are waiting for acknowledgements to be returned and any outstanding responses will be followed up within the month.
By joining the Philanthropic Programs group and learning what each committee and their members do for their recipients, you will learn much more about what being in Assistance League of Hawaii is all about. You will appreciate all that we do!

Our Thrift Shop sales for July were $23,001.31.The Urquhart Mortgage reduction amount was $1,600.37
The Bag Sale on Saturday, August 4 was very successful and busy. We made $1,947,26. In addition to the bag sale, household items were half-price.
On Tuesday, August 7 we collected $1,831 - a high amount for a Tuesday, especially after a Bag Sale.
Several members responded to the call for more help during the summer months when many were on the mainland or on vacation. Thanks to everyone who has put in extra hours and extra quarters. Nancy Sparacino will be away in September so we really need to fill up this month's calendar soon so she will not worry about it while in Italy.
Even with all the donations from Bruce, a dent has been made in the Urquhart donation in the Ohana Room. We are making significant progress in our mortgage reduction.
