A Message from the Director of College Counseling:
Dear Carondelet Families,
It is hard to believe that we are already a month into the school year! Fall is a busy time of year in the College Counseling world. The college application process can feel overwhelming for families, so I thought I would highlight a few ways in which we provide college support to our students.
Last week, College Counseling hosted several well-attended events:
- At the Regional Admissions Counselors of California College Fair, reps from 23 colleges met with our students, answered their questions, and informed them about their schools.
- For our first “Lunch and Learn” of the year, a program for freshmen and sophomores that introduces them to some preliminary college information, we were delighted to have over 70 students attend!
- College counselors took interested students to a Historically Black Colleges and Universities College Fair. Two students were awarded a full ride scholarship to Livingstone College!
- A representative from Washington State University visited Carondelet and offered on-the-spot admissions to 12 of our seniors.
- The Jesuit Excellence Tour Fair exposed students of all grade levels to the numerous Jesuit colleges and universities.
Upcoming Opportunities
This Tuesday, September 17, College Counseling is hosting our annual Road to College event (on Zoom). Families of all grade levels are invited to attend workshops on a diversity of topics ranging from college admission testing to selective admissions to learning how to apply to college. A full schedule and registration link can be found on this document. We hope to see you there!
Bigger Picture
There is clearly a demand for college information, even with some of our younger students, which is why College Counseling offers a wealth of opportunities for our students of all grade levels. For a full list of programming and college-related opportunities, please refer to the grade-level-specific curriculum guides:
College Tip
Students often ask what matters most on college applications, and without a doubt, it's their courses and grades. We are a few weeks into the semester, and it’s about now when classes intensify and the content becomes more challenging. If students are finding it difficult to keep up, they should take advantage of Carondelet’s numerous support programs. Teachers are available after school from Tuesday to Thursday to offer assistance. Additionally, students can sign up for PowerLab, which runs both before school and after school from Monday to Thursday. Peer tutors are also available upon request for extra support.
Ultimately, throughout high school, students should explore their interests, grow as learners, and enjoy being teenagers. Everyone at Carondelet is here to support students in achieving their personal and educational goals, and we look forward to another fantastic year with your students!

Academics and Academic & Learning Support
|
MAP Testing
MAP testing continues this week for our freshmen. This week’s focus is reading and language. The tests are designed to give clarity on progress for academic core skills. We use the MAP® Growth™ test from NWEA®. Your student will take the test on their school-issued iPad. The information we get from these helps us plan the curriculum and can be used to help with class recommendations for the following year. It is one data point, but we encourage students to take these tests seriously and try their best.
Office Hours
To make sure that students have enough access to teachers to get needed help, we scheduled more consistent teacher office hours. Teachers are all available to meet with students after school until 3:30 PM every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday (part-time teachers may have a slightly different schedule). Exact locations for teacher office hours will be listed on the course syllabus.
PowerLab and PowerStart Hours
PowerLab is also available to students Monday through Thursday in the Library until 3:30 PM. Mondays will be dedicated to organization and study support. Students can work with the Academic and Learning Support team to plan out their week and get help with organization. In general, students can go to PowerLab to get support from Peer Tutors and the Academic and Learning Support team with all their school work. For any specific content knowledge needs, the ALS team will help guide students to the right person.
PowerStart is available for early risers or those who have afternoon commitments. PowerStart begins at 7:30 AM and lasts until 8:10 AM; late start Wednesdays begin at 8:15 AM and ends at 9:00 AM.
We want to make sure that students get the help they need. Students can be referred to teacher office hours and/or PowerLab by teachers and parents or they can self-refer using this form: PowerLab Referral.
