September 1, 2023

Greetings Bradley Beach-

Here we are- LABOR DAY WEEKEND!  The weather of late has been really good.  We do have to be careful with tropical storms churning up the Atlantic; but the weather for the next week looks spectacular-so please enjoy the beach, our events, and Main Street restaurants and shops!

EVENTS- this past week and coming up!

We were fortunate to get “the Wags” back to Riley Park after a rain postponement a few weeks ago- and they did not disappoint.  The Beatles songs were great; and we had a great crowd on Wednesday night.

With the highly successful “Songwriters on the Beach” session just ending, we are having COMPLICATED MATTERS Saturday for our last Saturday Concerts in the Park. Please join us at Riley Park at 7:00PM!

Our last Summer Event will be a return to LATIN FEST 2023— mark your calendars- September 9th – from 3:00PM- 8:PM Riley Park.  We are hoping to build on that success and have a great event!

On to the BIG EVENT last Saturday- CHINATOWN BY THE SEA REUNION!!

What an event! People came from all over the tri-state area to participate.  Special thanks to the co-chairs Jayne Mackta and Jannett Lau, along with Paul Neshamkin (Historical Commission Chair) and Robyn Flipse (in the kitchen- head dumpling distributor !!).  The event was a testimony to a period in our history that we should all be proud of.  We should learn and value the lessons here- harmony, support, “looking out for the other guy”, hard work, and belonging to something bigger than ourselves.  This was an emotional and uplifting event.  I am so happy I participated in a small way.

Local Summer “II” is upon us!!

Mark your calendars for our Second annual Local Summer Celebration- Sunday, September 10th, 5:00PM – 7:30PM, at the Brinley Avenue Beach!!!

You bring the food and chairs, we provide the refreshments (water, lemonade, and Iced Tea).  You can also purchase food from Shore Eats, a very popular food truck on the Jersey Shore. Their eclectic menu is always a hit and we are excited that they have included Bradley Beach in their busy schedule. There will be games and prizes. Bring your 2023 beach badge for special prizes.  Feel Good Trolleys are participating!

Don’t forget your favorite beach chair !

* Infrastructure project:  The Biase Center roof replacement:

The finishing “punch list” for the roof replacement has been completed.

The roof was completely replaced. Our DPW team is completing building fixes prior to re-certification.  We are targeting a September re-opening!

Fletcher Lake.  Our partners, Neptune Township (specifically Ocean Grove) is near completion on the restoration of the northeast bulkhead portion of Fletcher Lake.  Work began 8 weeks ago and is basically completed, with the exception of landscaping and equipment removal.  This is a key project in terms of the safety and stability of the bulkhead and contributes to our continued improvements to Fletcher Lake.  Thank you to the Neptune and the Fletcher Lake Commission Team for advocating for this important project!

A Progress report on the 319 LaReine Avenue Church disposition:

As I mentioned in the last newsletter, we will be bringing to the September 13th Council Meeting, the next phase of the disposition of the 319 LaReine Church site.

T&M Engineering will attend and present their proposal at our September 13th meeting.  Additionally, an appraiser toured the structure; and is in the process of assessing the inventory and approximate value of artifacts at the site.  Hopefully these 2 activities will help move us forward.

Restaurants have become a defining characteristic of our community.

Health Alert: Tianeptine or “Gas Station Heroin”

The New Jersey Poison Center (NJPIES) has recently identified a cluster of poisoning cases involving tianeptine, a substance with opioid-like effects that is being falsely marketed and sold across the state in gas stations and online as a dietary supplement. Common names for tianeptine include “gas station heroin,” “ZaZa Red,” or “Neptune’s Elixir” (among others). Tianeptine use can lead to serious health complications and even death.

Over the 60-day period from June 17 to August 17, NJPIES has received 9 calls about patients poisoned by tianeptine, and some patients have become critically ill. Due to this cluster of cases and previous FDA warnings, the NJDOH has increased surveillance efforts around this substance and urges New Jersey residents to be cautious.

A few other quick topics to highlight:

Those residents that had grass repaired by the borough due to the sewer, curb, and street corner repairs.  P L E A S E water the areas so that they get established- THANKS!

After Labor Day, we will have a reduced lifeguard staff on our beaches for the month of September.  Enjoy this special time; but please exercise safety.

Our Beach is one of our key assets in which we are the stewards.  There is a mutual dependency with our Tourism in Bradley Beach and our beach.  Our Lifeguards, First Aid, and Police all do a great job in managing the beach.  There has to be, however, a respect for the power and sometimes danger of the Atlantic Ocean.   I urge everyone to promote water safety.  Please swim when lifeguards are on duty!

We will continue to focus on Service and Progress as a Municipal Team.

That’s all for now!

We have a lot to be thankful for here in Bradley Beach, and much to celebrate.

Thank you- and see you around town and happy Labor Day Weekend!

Mayor Larry Fox

September Tree of the Month… and Bradley the Seagull!

As the students of Bradley Beach Elementary embark on their first day back to school they will be greeted by the Tree of the Month, a Red Oak, along with their new mascot, Bradley the seagull, who’s ready to soar to new heights of school spirit!

This Red Oak, a native species and New Jersey’s state tree, is a symbol of strength and endurance. Planted in 2002, this tree was dedicated to George Moffett for his countless contributions and accomplishments in Bradley Beach.

This Red Oak, along with the dense foliage at Bradley Beach Elementary School, provides shade to regulate temperature and helps improve air quality, creating a healthier learning environment for students and staff alike.

The Bradley Beach Shade Tree Commission is an esteemed group of dedicated individuals who have made it their mission to enhance the borough’s green spaces. Their efforts have not only beautified our surroundings but have also had a profound impact on the well being of the entire community.

The next Bradley Beach Shade Tree Commission borough-wide tree planting is October 14.

If you’d like to sponsor an Honor Me tree or have a free Wishing Tree planted, please stop by the Borough Office at 701 Main Street for an application or visit
