Don't Fall into Fall
By Jennie Griggs
As we transition from the final days of summer into September, we approach my favorite season, fall.
September is National Senior Center Month, and it is filled with days to engage our aging population, including National Grandparents Day on September 8, and National Falls Prevention Awareness Week during the week of September 23.
Since September is National Senior Center Month, it offers us the perfect opportunity to celebrate our very own Northern Wake Senior Center (NWSC). Our goal at the NWSC is to play a vital role in the health and well-being of our members, their families, and our community as we deliver integrated programs supporting all domains of wellness, including arts and motion, arts and crafts, dance and fitness, educational sessions, programs and services suited for the aging population, clubs, events and celebrations, and special events. Recently, we supported the National Council on Aging advocacy campaign "Powering Connections," advocating to protect the Older Americans Act.
We invite you to come visit our facility where we endeavor to offer a welcoming environment (some even refer to it as their "home away from home") where members and guests can both share their unique interests, talents, passions, and aspirations and take part in such programs offered by others. We call this principle GOGO - Get One, Give One - whereby you get an hour doing something you love, and give an hour to something you want to share. This principle has provided several unique programs and events, helping us create something special.
As we journey into September, we invite you to join us at NWSC for our 9/11 Ceremony on Wednesday, Sept. 11, from 6-8:30 p.m., "A Time to Reflect, Honor, and Never Forget September 11, 2001."
We will also offer a unique program to commemorate National Falls Prevention Day on Tuesday, Sept 24, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. We are honored that Wake Forest Mayor Vivian Jones proclaimed this day National Falls Prevention Day in Wake Forest committing to the "Awareness to Action" program "Preventing Falls Starts with You and Starts Today."
When you consider the following facts, I believe you will agree how important it is for people of "All Stages & All Ages" to engage in this day:
Fact 1 - We live in a country where one in four Americans over 65 is subject to a fall, which is the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries.
Fact 2 - NC ranks 27th nationally because 28.9% of the population of 65 falls.
You can make a difference in preventing falls and dealing with your fear of falling, beginning at the NWSC on this day. We are here to make a difference.
There is a saying, "Fall into Fall." Please don't take that literally. Fall is a beautiful time of the year! So instead, we like to say, "Fall, Family & Fun!" Come see us.
Our newsletter offers specific schedules and information. Members will also receive a "Wink" about our programs. Please come join us!

Knox Homebox program gives Fire Department quicker access during emergencies
The Wake Forest Fire Department (WFFD) offers a life-saving initiative that provides firefighters with the safe and efficient entry they need into the homes of vulnerable residents during fires or medical emergencies.
The Knox Homebox program involves homeowners buying a steel lock box and firefighters locking their house key inside it. Fire crews have a master key that opens the box in the event of a medical emergency, fire, or other urgent need.
According to Fire Logistics Specialist David Davis, the initiative saves precious time for first responders and the potential expense of costly repairs for the homeowner due to forced entry.
“Our number one concern is getting inside the house to provide aid to someone who may be in trouble,” said Davis. “This program allows us to gain entry quickly without breaking down the door or breaking windows.”
