There's a reason flight attendants tell us "If you are traveling with young children, put the oxygen mask on yourself first." That's because if you pass out, you can't help anyone else.
Taking care of yourself first is important in our everyday lives as well. It may seem selfish or self-centered, but it is actually what we all should do.
We, especially women, are reluctant to take care of ourselves. Yet, in order to effectively care for those who are dependent on us, it is
exactly
what we
must
do.
When you care for yourself, you aren't being selfish. You are actually helping your loved ones. You will have more to give and be less apt to feel frazzled, impatient, and worn out.
Kids are back to school and the lazy, hazy days or summer are but a memory. This time of year often makes parents feel stretched to the max.
Some of you may be stressed caring for a sick or elderly loved one. Sadly, workplace stress is an all too common problem.
Whatever stress you are dealing with, remember to care for yourself first. If you "pass out" and collapse on the couch or into bed every night, you aren't able to be much help to others.
It is a great way to recharge and take care of yourself.
