Selected Titles for September 2023 | |
We're either a little late or a little early, depending on your point of view. We skipped our August newsletter, and this is our September newsletter, but it's coming out in August. There has been a lot going on here this summer: some travel, family visits, etc. Even booksellers occasionally take some time off! But next week, I take off on another road trip, this time to Maryland and the IPTW conference, which is having its 25th anniversary this year. I'll be the bookseller and would be delighted to see some of you there. Link: https://ptn.org/IPTW_2023
| |
The weather in August has been amazing! New England have been blessed, especially when you consider what extremes the rest of the nation has had to endure. We've had milder weather, with lots of rain. As a result, our vegetable garden and lawn have never performed better. I have to harvest tomatoes daily, or suffer the consequences.
On a sad note, we recently lost a colleague, Susan Schur, the publisher of a highly regarded journal "Technology and Conservation." Susan, whom I had known since 1992, lived in a Boston suburb, and had a wonderful technical library. We will be offering some of her books now and in the next few newsletters.
This month we are featuring some interesting new arrivals, including another copy of a scarce stone piece (#30), as well as a beautiful reprint of AGS's first edition (#18), 3 scarce casement trade catalogs, and a number of copies from the Oxford University Press on the history of the historic houses organized by state.
Happy browsing!

Artist's Portfolio
Decatur, S.
|
[Architectural Drawing]. Decatur, S. Artist's Portfolio. Cambridge, MA: S. Decatur, n.d. c. 1900. First edition thus. Cloth over Boards with 4-hole, cloth-tie binding. Very Good; cloth tie binding is broken.
This is a mystery. The title page indicates that this was created by someone at MIT, but without a full name it is difficult to decipher whether this is a professor or a student. The drawings are well executed images of mathematical and architectural elements, drawn in fine black ink, with watercolor enhancements to some to introduce color or patterning to the drawing. A lovely portfolio with attractive and artistic rendering. (22120) $275.00

Drafting Culture: A Social History of Architectural Graphic Standards
Williams & Williams Ltd., Chester, UK
|
[Architecture]. Johnston, George Barnett. Drafting Culture: A Social History of Architectural Graphic Standards. Cambridge, MA: The MIT Press, 2008. First edition. Quarto, pp. 285, indexed, illustrated with b/w photographs and architectural drawings. Color Decorated Boards, Cloth spine. New.
Architectural Graphics Standards by Charles George Ramsey and Harold Reeve Sleeper, first published in 1932 (and now in its eleventh edition), is a definitive technical reference for architects-the one book that every architect needs to own. The authors, one a draftsman and the other an architect, created a graphic compilation of standards that amounted to an index of the combined knowledge of their profession. This first comprehensive history of Ramsey and Sleeper's classic work explores the changing practical uses that this "draftsman's Bible" has served, as well as the ways in which it has registered the shifts within the architectural profession since the first half of the twentieth century. When Architectural Graphics Standards first appeared, architecture was undergoing its transition from vocation to profession-from the draftsman's craft to the architect's academically based knowledge with a concomitant rise in social status. The older "drafting culture" gave way to massive postwar changes in design and building practice. Writing a history of the architectural profession from the bottom up-from the standpoint of the architectural draftsman-George Barnett Johnston clarifies the role and status of the subordinate architectural workers who once made up the base of the profession. Johnston's account of the evolution of Ramsey and Sleeper's book also offers a case study of the social hierarchies embedded within architecture's division of labor. Johnston investigates what became of the draftsman, and what became of drafting culture, and asks - importantly, in today's era of digital formats - what price is exacted from architectural labor as architecture pursues new professional ideals. Their work was widely praised, including this ground-breaking book on Spanish wooden ceilings. Spain had more wooden ceilings than any other European countries; while England and France tended to remove wooden ceilings as the fashion changed, Spain kept hers and constructed new ones. The ceilings chosen for this book showcased the greatest variety of structural forms and applied decoration. A monumental work. (22121) $200.00

Specifications for Practical Architecture

|
[Architectural History]. Rogers, Frederick. Specifications for Practical Architecture a guide to the architect, engineer, surveyor, and builder, with an essay on the structure and science of modern buildings, upon the basis of the work by Alfred Bartholomew, thoroughly revised, corrected, and greatly added to. Signed neatly in ink by the original owner on the front endpaper in 1886. Glossy Pictorial Wraps. Good; weak hinges, heavy edge and corner wear on the cover.
In the 1880s, a volume of specifications was sorely needed, and the old standard work of Alfred Bartholomew was out of print. Chapter 27 was completely rewritten, giving an entirely new workhouse specification. Concrete has become a very popular building material since Bartholomew's book was published, and regulations of the Metropolitan Board of Works were added. An important reference book for the student of Victorian architecture. Very scarce; this is the first time we've been able to offer this title. (22131) $175.00

In the tradition of Rizzoli’s Historic Houses of the Hudson Valley and The Houses of McKim, Mead & White, Great Houses of New England features a stunning array of newly photographed houses that range over four centuries and are distinctive examples of the architecture of the region—from the mid-seventeenth-century New England Colonial Judge Corwin House (Witches House) in Salem, MA., and the eighteenth-century Jeremiah Lee Mansion in Marblehead, MA., to the late-nineteenth-century McKim, Mead & White Shingle-Style Isaac Bell House in Newport, R.I. With lavish photography of sumptuously appointed interiors including many rarely seen rooms, wonderfully detailed house exteriors and gardens, and authoritative text by architectural historian Roderic H. Blackburn, Great Houses of New England comprehensively considers the magnificent building styles of the region—including Early New England Colonial, Georgian, Federal, Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, Italianate, Shingle Style, Colonial Revival, and Tudor. Great Houses of New England is a landmark work of enduring interest to homeowners, architects, architecture historians, and all those who love fine architecture and interiors. (22091) $40.00

[New York]. Abrams, Jonathan K. [Editor]; Donald Doremus [Photographer]. Building the Empire State: Design for the Future An informational guide. New York: State of New York Office of General Services, November 1975. First edition. Quarto, pp. 14, illustrated with b/w photographs. Staplebound Wraps. Very Good.
The Empire State Plaza is a complex of several state government buildings in downtown Albany, New York. The complex was built between 1965 and 1976, and houses several departments of the New York State administration. It is integrated with the New York State Capitol, completed in 1899, which houses the state legislature. The plaza was the idea of Governor Nelson Rockefeller, who was inspired to create the new government complex after Queen Juliana of the Netherlands visited Albany. Riding with the queen through the city, Rockefeller was embarrassed. He conceived the basic design of the complex with architect Wallace Harrison, using Brasilia, Versailles, and Chandigarh as models. The massive scale was designed to be appreciated from across the Hudson River. This brochure gives an overview of the buildings, their history, and their security. Scarce; currently the only copy available anywhere. (22117) $75.00

Our Colonial Homes
Drake, Samuel Adams
|
[Architectural History]. Drake, Samuel Adams. Our Colonial Homes. Boston: Lee and Shepard Publishers, 1894. First edition. Small quarto, pp. 211, illustrated with 20 b/w photographs. Beige Cloth over Boards, Gilt Page Edges. Very Good.
The author strove to gather up as many as possible examples of distinct types of colonial architecture in New England, from the rude farmhouse of the first settlers to the elegant mansion of a later generation. Each house is accompanied by a sketch recording fragments of the home's history that had become scattered with the lapse of time. Most of the historical sketches were written up for Appleton's Journal, but several were written for this book and many of the old ones were rewritten with new information. Each has an interesting story, an admirable lesson, or patriotic inspiration. They are a legacy from the past, of which our generation is only the trustee. (22105) $30.00

Houses: Permanence and Prefabrication

[Architecture]. Anthony, Hugh. Houses: Permanence and Prefabrication. London: Pleiades Books, 1945. First edition. Small quarto, pp. 64, illustrated with b/w drawings and photographs. Mild ex-library marking. Cloth over Boards. Very Good.
England needed four million houses immediately after WWII. Such a program obviously called for wider and more imaginative use of the improved building methods and techniques that were developed in the years preceding the war, but were still unfamiliar to the public. This book attempts to define more clearly such terms as prefabrication, temporary housing, mass production, etc., to trace their history, and to set out in simple form the real problems involved in housing - social, technical and financial. There is no technical difficulty in the way of producing the houses needed in the quantities and of the quality required. The brake on the wheel is a political one - the fear and ignorance of obstructive and sectional interests. Hard to find in the US. (22113) $25.00

Shepley Bulfinch is an international architecture, planning, and interior design firm with offices in Boston, Hartford, Houston, and Phoenix. Shepley Bulfinch created these images for holiday greeting cards and gifts for their clients. The B. B. Chemical Building, located at 784 Memorial Drive in Cambridge, Massachusetts, was designed for a subsidiary of the United Shoe Manufacturing Company on its prominent site on the Charles River. The first modern industrial structure in Cambridge, this marked the introduction of a new style in the architectural firm's design vocabulary. Henry Richardson Shepley, the firm's principal partner, led the design team with architects Henry Wijk and Herman Voss. Shepley's work shows the influence of his close friendship with Walter Gropius, and was constructed in 1938. The design adopted several elements of International style while drawing on the vocabulary of classical architecture, including the insertion of a vertical tower, which varied the facade while preserving symmetry. The building was later sold to Polaroid, which used it for a time as a corporate headquarters. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. This would make a wonderful gift for a Cantabrigian. (21981) $25.00

The Art of Decorative Design
Dresser, Christopher
|
[Design]. Dresser, Christopher. The Art of Decorative Design. Watkins Glen, NY: American Life Foundation, 1977. Reprint of 1862 edition, limited to 2000 copies. Octavo, pp. 241, illustrated with 162 figures in the text, and 28 plates, of which 14 are in color. Oversized Paperback. As New.
Christopher Dresser was one of the most original decorative artists in the second half of the 19th century. This book, first published in London in 1821, was his most influential book. Although Dresser's patterns, shapes, and ornaments for buildings, silver, textiles, wall coverings, stencils, etc. were fresh, they were discernibly "Victorian." This is why he was subsequently forgotten - a victim of the 20th century distaste for anything "Victorian." Yet in truth, he was one of those who shaped the modern concept of design. As one of the most important theorists of the Aesthetic Movement, Dresser and his books impressed the younger generation of Arts & Crafts Movement designers. This book will be especially useful to owners of old houses of the period who want borders and friezes to replace the originals which have disappeared long ago under subsequent layers of paint. Architectural Encounters with Essence and Form in Modern China
Rowe, Peter G. and Seng Kuan
|
[International]. Rowe, Peter G. and Seng Kuan. Architectural Encounters with Essence and Form in Modern China. Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, 2002. First edition. Small quarto, pp. 287, indexed, illustrated with b/w photographs. Color Pictorial Wraps. As New.
Built around snatches of discussion overheard in a Beijing design studio, this book explores attitudes toward architecture in China since the opening of the Treaty Ports in the 1840s. Central to the discussion are the concepts of ti and yong, or "essence" and "form," Chinese characters that are used to define the proper arrangement of what should be considered modern and essentially Chinese. The book considers such subjects as cultural developments in China in response to the forced opening to the West in the mid-19th century, the return of overseas-educated Chinese architects, foreign influences on Chinese architecture, the controversy over the use of "big roofs" and other aspects of Chinese architecture in the 1950s, the hard economic conditions of the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution - when architecture was almost abandoned - and the beginning of reform and opening up to the outside world in the late 1970s and 1980s. Finally, it looks at the present socialist market economy and Chinese architecture during the still incomplete process of modernization. (22143) $20.00
