Selected Titles for May 2024 | |
|
This month's highlight involved a 12-day trip back to my second homeland, Germany. I was my high school's first exchange student, from Bainbridge Island, Puget Sound, to Cologne, Germany, 1963-1964. (!) This trip I visited two of my closest friends from that high school experience.
My direct exchange partner, Burghard Neite, went for his senior year to Bainbridge Island. After his college studies, he taught for 40+ years in West Germany, and finally retired to a small country on the Luxembourg border. Here we are, in Trier (the oldest city in Germany, and the largest Roman fortress north of the Alps), me, Burghard and his wife of 52 years, Uschi. It was great catching up and, believe it or not, in the last 60+ years ... we've gotten older!
| |
|
On my return trip, I stopped to visit Dr. Albert Jennissen, who attended the Gymnasium in Cologne, in the class ahead of mine. But we both played on the school basketball team (Albert spent about ten years growing up in Huntsville, Alabama). He is a medical doctor and has been retired for a decade or more.
One thing that became clear to me: I no longer enjoy airline travel. I flew Icelandic Air, which always means a 3-hour stopover in Reykjavik. By the time I landed in Frankfurt, I was exhausted. I had hoped to take public transportation, but ended up with a rental car. The German train system was the victim of a huge flood 2 years ago, and many tracks are still not replaced.
This month's offerings feature a large number of titles we've never offered before, so take a good look!
Happy browsing!

Colonial Homes: A Collection of the Latest Designs

| |
[Pattern Book]. Craftsman Bungalow Co. Colonial Homes: A Collection of the Latest Designs. Seattle: Yoho & Merritt, 1920. First edition. Oblong Octavo, pp. 40, illustrated w/ b/w photographs, perspective drawings and plans. Original Wraps. Very Good.
"Colonial bungalow" was the name applied to the new type of residence that became so popular in the 1920s on the Pacific Coast. It was no different from the ordinary bungalow in the arrangement of rooms and interior detail, with the exception of a more generous use of the sun room, and a liberal use of French doors between rooms instead of colonnades and paneled arches. The elimination of ceiling beams and wood-paneled walls is also noticeable. On the exterior, the wide low porches of a traditional bungalow are replaced by small entrance porches, pergola roofed terraces, and sun rooms. These design changes worked very well for the Pacific Coast.. Over 30 designs are featured in this book. Extremely scarce; currently the only copy available anywhere. (22590) $300.00

The Decoration of Houses
Ogden, Jr Codman and Edith Wharton
| |
[Interiors]. Ogden, Jr Codman and Edith Wharton. The Decoration of Houses. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1901. Early Edition. Small quarto, pp. 204, indexed, illustrated with b/w photographs. Ex-library markings, several loose pages, some light watermarks. A previous owner signed the title page in ink in 1902. Hardcover. Good, ex-library, rebound in blue library buckram, and in a custom archival case.
In 1897, Wharton was a 30-something Manhattan society matron with a keen interest in architecture and interior design, not yet the Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist she would become. Codman was a blue-blooded architect, with whom Wharton and her husband were remodeling a summer place in Newport, Rhode Island. Poor taste and vulgarity of all kinds reigned there, thanks to newly moneyed clans anxious to put their money to conspicuous use. Wharton and Codman decided to write a book about how to build and decorate houses with nobility, grace, and timelessness. Sound advice has timeless value, and the book's suggestions and observations remain insightful and inspiring. From the Old House Journal reference library (12041) $200.00

This book brings focus to Maybeck's late career and work outside California and provides a reevaluation of his design approach and intentions in his more traditionally styled work. The book relies on a unique and extensive archive at Principia College, and documents Maybeck's last and longest commission, the campus plans, un-executed projects, and built architecture for Principia. New assessments have been gained through Maybeck's taped interviews with this major client, Frederic Morgan, and with Edward Hussey of Maybeck's office, as well as on conversations and interviews with others associated with the work. The extensive Maybeck-Morgan correspondence allows much of the story to be told by the participants, through letters and other records preserved in the Principia archives. The Maybeck reassessment is also presented in the light of a wider range of theoretical influences discussed here for the first time. (22444) $40.00

[Concrete & Cement]. Croft, Catherine. Concrete Architecture. Salt Lake City, UT: Gibbs Smith, 2004. First edition. Small quarto, pp. 240, indexed, illustrated with color photographs. Cloth over Boards. Very Good in Very Good DJ.
No longer the material of choice for just factories and industrial buildings, concrete is now fashionable and chic, adorning shops, restaurants, homes, and landscapes with its desirable, tactile surfaces. This reversal of fortune can be attributed to its use in luxurious homes and the discovery that concrete can provide stimulating or soothing environments for a range of leisure activities. Organized around the themes of Home, Work, Play, and Landscape, all the examples chosen celebrate the intrinsic qualities of concrete and how they work to make the places in which we live, work, and play and to shape the wider landscape that surrounds us. A range of projects from around the world includes a private house in Osaka by Tadao Ando, Canary Wharf Underground Station in London by Foster and Partners, the Museum of Asian Art in Paris by Henri and Bruno Gaudin, and recent work by Morphosis and Antoine Predock in the United States. From the manor houses of the 18th century to the Greek and Gothic villas that spread across the state when the Erie Canal was completed, to the palatial residences of the Victorian era, the Brooklyn tenements of Alfred White and, finally, 20th century New York and the achievements of Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies van der Rohe, Eero Saarinen, and others. Architectural monuments from the 1700s to the present - those that have vanished and those that survive - houses, hotels, churches, office and government buildings. An outstanding study in visual recall. (22580) $30.00

Native American Architecture
Nabokov, Peter and Robert Easton
| |
[Architectural History]. Nabokov, Peter and Robert Easton. Native American Architecture. New York: Oxford University Press, 1989. First edition. Quarto, pp. 431, indexed, illustrated with b/w and color photographs. Inscribed with a beautiful gift inscription to Lee H. Nelson for the occasion of his retirement in 1990 on the front endpaper. Lee H. Nelson was an architect with the Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation, branch of Restorations, of the National Park Service. Cloth over Boards. Very Good in Very Good DJ.
For many people, Native American architecture calls to mind the wigwam, tipi, iglu, and pueblo. Yet the richly diverse building traditions of Native Americans encompass much more, including specific structures for sleeping, working, worshipping, meditating, playing, dancing, lounging, giving birth, decision-making, cleansing, storing and preparing food, caring for animals, and honoring the dead. In effect, the architecture covers all facets of Indian life. This volume is a collaboration between an architect and an anthropologist, and presents the first book-length, fully illustrated exploration of North American Indian architecture to appear in over a century.
