Well, finally we can say it: spring is here at World Headquarters. The signs of the (spring) times - the heat is turned off, I get my vegetable garden planted, I put the top down on the 1959 Thunderbird convertible, and I admire my beautiful rhododendron.
And what would spring be without a small-town Memorial Day parade? The participation seems to be dwindling, but this year there were hundreds of school-age paraders, which was encouraging. I watched it all from my front yard on Park Street, from the front seat of the 1959. My favorite: the young lady wearing her grandpa's bombardier jacket from WWII!!

I just returned from a hectic weekend, where I exhibited at a small book fair in Newport, Rhode Island. The high point was a visit from a best friend from 1970-1971: Russ Ouellette and I were in Vietnam together for about a year, both draftees. We were in an artillery forward fire base and eventually maneuvered up to Khe Sanh, on the DMZ. Russ, pictured here with me in front of my booth, was an 18-year-old smiling kid, who pronounced to us 22-year-olds that he was going to return to his Rhode Island home town, join the fire department, and marry his 18-year-old girlfriend. Fast forward 50 years, he's visiting me with his wife of 50 years, and retired as battalion chief of his fire department.
This month we were invited to look at duplicate books in the archives of the illustrious architectural firm of Shepley Bulfinch. They are celebrating 150 years. Some of this month's offerings are from their library, most notably some impressive posters of Boston landmarks. There's also an extensive selection of books on stone.

Advertising Poster: The Polaroid Building in Cambridge, Massachusetts

[Architects]. Shepley Bulfinch. Advertising Poster: The Polaroid Building in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Boston: Shepley Bulfinch, 2007. First edition. Poster, 18.25" x 35.5", b/w reproduction of an original Shepley Bullfinch architectural drawing. Black and white poster. As New.
Shepley Bulfinch is an international architecture, planning, and interior design firm with offices in Boston, Hartford, Houston, and Phoenix. Shepley Bulfinch created these images for holiday greeting cards and gifts for their clients. The B. B. Chemical Building, located at 784 Memorial Drive in Cambridge, Massachusetts, was designed for a subsidiary of the United Shoe Manufacturing Company on its prominent site on the Charles River. The first modern industrial structure in Cambridge, this marked the introduction of a new style in the architectural firm's design vocabulary. Henry Richardson Shepley, the firm's principal partner, led the design team with architects Henry Wijk and Herman Voss. Shepley's work shows the influence of his close friendship with Walter Gropius, and was constructed in 1938. The design adopted several elements of International style while drawing on the vocabulary of classical architecture, including the insertion of a vertical tower, which varied the facade while preserving symmetry. The building was later sold to Polaroid, which used it for a time as a corporate headquarters. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. This would make a wonderful gift for a Cantabrigian. (21981) $30.00

Venturi Scott Brown & Associates: Buildings and Projects, 1986-1998 - signed with an original sketch by Venturi
von Moos, Stanislaus

[Architectural Monograph]. von Moos, Stanislaus. Venturi Scott Brown & Associates: Buildings and Projects, 1986-1998 - signed with an original sketch by Venturi. New York: Monticelli Press, 1999. First edition. Small quarto, pp. 367, illustrated with b/w and color photographs and drawings. Signed with an original sketch on the title page by Robert Venturi. Cloth over Boards. As New in Fine DJ.
Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown are among the world's leading contemporary architects. Their writings, including the seminal books Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture (1966; Venturi) and Learning from Las Vegas (1972; Venturi, Scott Brown, and Steven Izenour), have profoundly influenced architectural thought. The built work of the firm Venturi, Scott Brown & Associates of Philadelphia has had an equally great impact. Through a commitment to a creative understanding of history and the everyday environment and to the use of visual references in the design of buildings, this firm has changed the face of modern architecture. Guild House (1963), the Vanna Venturi House (1963), and Franklin Court (1976), all in Philadelphia, are key examples of a new outlook on the art of building. This landmark monograph -- assembled in collaboration with the architects -- illustrates the firm's work between 1986 and 1998. (21915) $100.00

L'Art Decoratif D'Aujourd'hui [Decorative Art Today]
Le Corbusier

[Decorative Arts]. Le Corbusier. L'Art Decoratif D'Aujourd'hui [Decorative Art Today] Collection de "L'Esprit Nouveau" Paris: Les Editions G. Cres et Cie, 1925. Ninth edition. Small quarto, pp. 218, illustrated with b/w drawings and photographs. Text in French. Paperback. Good; backstrip repaired, but front hinge is starting to split again.
Charles-Edouard Jeanneret (1887-1965), known as Le Corbusier, was a Swiss-French architect, designer, painter, urban planner, writer, and one of the pioneers of what is now regarded as modern architecture. An important early work of Le Corbusier was the Esprit Nouveau Pavilion, built for the 1925 Paris International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts, the event which later gave Art Deco its name. In his journal L'Esprit Nouveau, he vividly denounced the decorative arts: "Decorative Art, as opposed to the machine phenomenon, is the final twitch of the old manual modes, a dying thing." To illustrate his ideas, he created a small pavilion at the Exposition, representing his idea of the future urban housing unit. This book consolidates all his writings about the Exposition and his exhibit there. This should be interesting reading for anyone who wants to explore his theories further. (21995) $50.00

A History of English Brickwork
Lloyd, Nathaniel

[Brick]. Lloyd, Nathaniel. A History of English Brickwork with examples and notes of the achitectural use and manipulation of brick from mediaeval times to the end of the Georgian period. London: H. Greville Montgomery, 1925. First edition. Octavo, pp. xv, 449, indexed, illustrated with b/w photographs, with an introduction by Sir Edwin Lutyens, an English architect who needs no description. There are probably more buildings in England constructed of brick than of any other material. Amongst these are some of the most interesting, the most picturesque and the most serviceable structures that we have in any material. Attempt has been made to illustrate all types, including buildings which are well known. The majority, however, of the buildings and details have not appeared in any book before this one, and the author took the photographs specially for this volume. Typical details are given of doorways, windows, ornaments, etc., and below each are notes and dates. An important documentation of a great English tradition, from the Mediaeval period to the Georgian period. (22011) $320.00

English Mural Monuments & Tombstones
Godfrey, Walter H.

[International]. Godfrey, Walter H. English Mural Monuments & Tombstones A collection of eighty-four photographs of Wall Tablets, Table Tombs and Headstones of the 17th & 18th Centuries; the subjects specially selected by Herbert Batsford as representative examples of the beautiful and traditional types in the English Parish Church and Churchyard, for the use of Craftsmen and as a guide in the present revival of public taste. London: B.T. Batsford Ltd., 1916. First edition. Small quarto, pp. 15 plus 84 b/w full page photographic plates. Batsford publisher's catalog laid in. Shepley Bulfinch Richardson & Abbott stamp on front endpaper. Decorated Cloth over Boards. Very Good.
Of all forms of art, the memorial to the dead is, by intention, the most lasting. We do not need the Pyramids to remind us, the monuments and tablets in our parish churches are eloquent witness of the deep ingrained desire to perpetuate the memory of those who have left us. The most practical form for a commemorative stone in the interior of a church is the wall tablet. What do we actually know about stone walls? about the people who built them, and why? Stone walls are not simply monuments to the skill of Yankee farmers. The historical record makes clear that many were built by slaves, Indians, indentured servants, and children. Sermons in Stone is the surprising and illuminating history of the walls, a story that begins in the Ice Age and that has been shaped by the fencing dilemmas of the nineteenth century, by conflicts between Native Americans and colonists over land use, by American waves of immigration and suburbanization. "Who would think that a history of that humble workaday structure, the stone wall, would be so full of the fascinating, the peculiar, the downright eccentric? But here it is, laid out in a sprightly style and beautifully illustrated by the ink drawings of David Howell." - Dallas Morning News 47 (21964) $25.00

In the Company of Stone: The Art of the Stone Wall
Snow, Dan

[Stone]. Snow, Dan . In the Company of Stone: The Art of the Stone Wall. New York: Artisan, 2001. First edition. Quarto, pp. 118, illustrated with b/w and color photographs. Color Pictorial Wraps. As New.
Daniel Snow is a waller, an artisan who builds walls, terraces, caverns, and the occasional sphere or pool out of dry stone. It's an ancient skill--building with only what the earth provides. No mortar, no nails, nothing to hold his creations together except gravity, an invisible glue he can sense in the stones' "conversations" of squeaks and rumbles. A hollow sound means a void needs to be filled; a solid fit is secured with the sound of a bolt being thrown. Snow's evocative prose and Peter Mauss's richly textured photographs of Snow's work reveal the nuance and beauty of walling--and of one man's relationship with nature. The result is by turns poetic and practical. (21965) $30.00

[Architectural Monograph]. Lombard, Joanna and Beth Dunlop. The Architecture of Duany Plater-Zyberk and Company. New York: Rizzoli International Publications, 2005. First edition. Small quarto, pp 176. Beautifully illustrated, includes bibliography. Hardcover. New in new dustjacket.
This book is a monograph on the highly successful urban design and architecture firm started by Andrés Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk in 1980 and is now known simply as DPZ. Credited with popularizing small towns and villages as welcome alternatives to the bleak monotony of the suburbs, DPZ champions vernacular architecture (traditional buildings with ties to local culture) in neighborhoods that share the same common features that made small-town living so livable. This book illustrates representative buildings, mainly houses, that make up some of these communities in such places as Seaside, Florida, Kentlands, Maryland, and Markham, Ontario. In addition, the book showcases individual buildings that demonstrate DPZ’s reinvigoration of a simple vernacular architecture, including the Hibiscus House in Coconut Grove, Florida, and the Carambola Villas in St. Croix. Oblong small quarto, pp. 155, indexed, illustrated with b/w and color photographs. Signed by the author on the title page. Decorated Boards. As New.
This book tells the story of the building that Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum calls home. It details how Andrew Carnegie's grand but functional Fifth Avenue mansion--which was pioneering in its design, with an electric elevator and modern steel-frame construction--was constructed. The book features the rooms in which Carnegie conducted his business and philanthropic endeavors, and where the family and staff lived and entertained throughout the mid-twentieth century. It also surveys plans for the 1976 renovation by Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer (when Cooper Hewitt first opened as a public museum) and the building's latest extraordinary renovation by Gluckman Mayner Architects, executive architect Beyer Blinder Belle and world-renowned Diller, Scofidio + Renfro, which has positioned Cooper Hewitt as a truly twenty-first-century design museum. Upon completion of three years of intense work, the new building has been LEED certified, and has gained an additional 6,000 square feet of gallery space. With an engaging narrative illustrated by 200 photographs, maps, floor plans and letters, this book chronicles the 110-year history of the National Landmark building, as well as the evolution of the museum from its establishment by the Hewitt Sisters in 1897 to its status post-renovation in 2014 as the site of the nation's design authority. The Aesthetic Movement 1869-1890
Spencer, Charles [Editor]

[Art Nouveau]. Spencer, Charles [Editor]. The Aesthetic Movement 1869-1890 Catalogue of an exhibition at the Camden Arts Centre London 15 August - 7 October 1973. New York: St Martin's Press, 1973. First American edition. Quarto, pp. 94, illustrated with b/w photographs. Color Pictorial Wraps. Very Good.
The Aesthetic Movement is rightly regarded as the prelude to Art Nouveau, and in common with a number of other manifestations in the second half of the 19th century, was greatly influenced by the opening up of Japan to Western trade. There had been earlier oriental phases in European art, the result of contacts with China and India in previous centuries, but in terms of popular design and for a number of important artists, the Japanese influence was to prove of lasting importance, extending from the 1880s to the 1920s. This volume is a permanent record of the most important exhibition on the subject, held at the Camden Art Centre, London. The editor's introduction traces the development of the movement and Martin Battersby has contributed an essay on Aesthetic Design. From the Old House Journal reference library. (21999) $25.00

[Decorative Arts]. Durant, Stuart. The Decorative Designs of C.F.A. Voysey from the Drawings Collection, the British Architectural Library, The Royal Institute of British Architects. New York: Rizzoli, 1991. First American edition. Quarto, pp. 96, illustrated with color photographs. Color Pictorial Wraps. As New.
C. F. A. Voysey is chiefly remembered today as one of the leading domestic architects of the early 20th century. Before his career was established, however, to supplement his income he started to design fabrics and wallpapers, and became as successful a designer as he was an architect. Voysey's designs were as distinctive as his houses, and show a sense of color that was exceptional in the late Victorian and Edwardian eras. This images in this collection cover a period of over 40 years, and include both commercial and private designs. The author's study of Voysey's work and selection of over 60 designs makes the gems of the Royal Institute of British Architects drawings collection available in print for the first time. P. B. Wight: Architect, Contractor, and Critic, 1838-1925
Landau, Sarah Bradford

[Architectural Monograph]. Landau, Sarah Bradford. P. B. Wight: Architect, Contractor, and Critic, 1838-1925 An Exhibition Organized by the Burnham Library of Architecture, The Art Institute of Chicago; Checklists of Wight's Publications, his Buildings and Projects, and those of the firm of Carter, Drake and Wight. Chicago, IL: Art Institute of Chicago, 1981. First edition. Quarto, pp. 108, illustrated with b/w drawings and photographs. Color Pictorial Wraps. Very Good.
Wight is one of many Chicago architects who, while influential within his own lifetime, has been neglected by recent historians who have stressed Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Wight's drawings were buried in the Archives of the Burnham Library since their donation in 1918, a casualty of the previous emphasis on those Chicago greats, and the antagonism of the modern movement and its functionalist doctrines to the elaborate decoration of Victorian architecture. The Wight Collection remained virtually unknown to students and scholars alike until this exhibition in 1918. The exhibition and this catalog present Wight's forgotten contribution to American architecture and the gem-like quality of his designs to a post-modern age that is more receptive to the artistic impact of architectural drawings.
