Selected Titles for July 2023 | |
|
We hope you had an enjoyable Fourth of July. I spent mine in Gloucester, with my two daughters Steph and Kim, and Steph's husband CJ, and their re-homed dog Lincoln. We managed to find two rainless hours to sit on the deck with a gin and tonic.
| |
|
But we find ourselves in the wettest June I can remember. The last two weeks have featured daily showers, some rather intense, resulting in a good growing season. I'll take it! My garden and yard look good; I've already harvested basil for pesto sauce, and hoping for early July tomatoes and kale.
| |
|
I framed up one of the Shepley Bulfinch posters, of Logan Airport 1944, for daughter Kim's office in Portland. It frames up beautifully. We still have a couple more copies of each of the three posters from last month, as well as a couple of copies of the monograph on this illustrious Boston firm. Click here to see our Logan Airport poster for sale.
Speaking of Shepley Bulfinch: we are featuring some amazing duplicates from the S-B archives, in our new arrival listings.
Also, take note of #18 below, which is a scarce Civil War training manual, and #42, a beautiful Canadian trade piece. There is another installment of stone titles, many uncommon titles we've not had before, in our "$40 and under" section.
Happy browsing!

This fascinating volume explores the American bungalow as an art form and as a document reflecting middle-class life in its era. Casual and informal, the bungalow mirrored the society that produced it, and (like that society) displayed no predominant architectural ancestry. It was conceived specifically for the contented middle class, and these folks wanted a house adequate for the comforts of a small family, usually situated on a lot of modest proportions, affording an overall effect of homeliness and available at a price the average citizen could afford. The Forgotten Art Of Building A Good Fireplace

[Masonry]. Orton, Vrest. The Forgotten Art Of Building A Good Fireplace: How to Alter Unsatisfactory Fireplaces & to Build New Ones in the 18th Century Fashion The Story of Count Rumford & His Fireplace Designs That Have Remained Unchanged Since 1795. Dublin, NH: Yankee, 1985. Second edition. Small quarto, pp. 60, illustrated with b/w photographs and drawings. Paperback. Very Good.
Most modern architects and masons do not know how to design or to build a fireplace in the 18th century manner that will always be a source of beauty and delight and never smoke ... if built right. Trouble is, most fireplaces built in American homes in the 20th century have been built wrong: they are low, squatty, unattractive boxes and they usually smoke. Sir Benjamin Thompson, Count Rumford, an American genius of equal stature in science and invention to Benjamin Franklin, established basic and immutable principles of fireplace design in 1795; these have remained unchanged and nearly unknown since that time. This book is the first separate book since 1906 on Rumford's fireplace design. The author sets forth in this volume the basic principles and, with drawings by Austin Stevens based on Rumford's work, he offers Rumford's designs for a new generation. This book can also be used to alter existing, bad fireplaces into good ones. (22078) $15.00

Dry stone walls are strong and durable, and they add character to our rural landscape. Many have stood for hundreds of years and are monuments to the skills of those who built them, often with primitive tools in inhospitable environments. The author looks into the history and development of dry stone walling and demonstrates how to build a wall, with step-by-step explanations accompanied by photographs and diagrams. All aspects of the construction are covered, including building on slopes, building curved walls, gapping, retaining walls, and other variations. A hard to find English title that we've not offered before. (22079) $35.00
