Selected Titles for January 2024

It's all my fault: I was just commenting on how we New Englanders have had an easy time of it for the last two winters. As I'm writing this series of introductory paragraphs, we are in about the 16th hour of a Nor'easter, with no end in sight. I can't even begin to shovel it up yet. And we're getting another two inches, in the form of rain, tomorrow! Gotta love New England winters.

I exchanged gifts with my friend, preservation pioneer Clem Labine; he usually sends some nice red wine, which I share with my daughters. Here I am with older daughter Stephanie at younger daughter Kim's tree.

And speaking of Clem Labine: his Yale graduating class has been tasking class members to speak for a half hour on career topics. Clem's talk centers on how his Park Slope Brooklyn brownstone dragged him into publishing. Clem is a chemical engineer, but in DIYing projects in his brownstone, he started a newsletter which became Old House Journal. He later started two other magazines, Traditional Building and Period Homes. Link to his Yale talk: https://alumninet.yale.edu/classes/yc1957/events.html

It's a fascinating 30-minute talk about preservation in the 1970s.

While up in Portland, Maine, my daughters and I took in the movie "The Boys in the Boat," about the UW rowers who won the gold medal in the Berlin Olympics in 1936. As a Seattle native, and someone who lived in Berlin for two years, I found the movie fascinating and highly recommend it.

Under the heading of mark your calendars, we will be the bookstore at an event in Manchester, NH in mid-March. Details to follow: https://www.nhpreservation.org/old-house-barn-expo

We have some titles this month that we've never featured before, for the period home owner and professional preservationist. I hope you can find a few titles for your home library.

Happy browsing!

The eighteenth-century fascination with Greek and Roman antiquity followed the systematic excavation of the ruins at Pompeii and Herculaneum in southern Italy; and after 1750 a neoclassical style dominated all artistic fields. This title focused on geometry, timber, floors, roofs, ceilings, staircases, spires, and railings, and the supplement focused on ornaments on doors and windows. The Works in Architecture of Robert & James Adam

Oresko, Robert [Editor]

[Architectural Monograph]. Oresko, Robert [Editor]. The Works in Architecture of Robert & James Adam. New York: St Martin's Press, 1975. First American edition. Quarto, pp. 184, indexed, illustrated with b/w photographs and drawings. Boards. Very Good in Very Good DJ.

This book sets out clearly Robert and James Adam's aesthetic credo and stakes their claim to having affected a revolution in the decorative arts of the late 18th century. Following the tradition of the great Renaissance and Baroque architects, the Adam brothers codified their style and made their rich vocabulary of decoration available to designers in England and on the continent. The Adam style was fundamentally eclectic, drawing most heavily for inspiration upon the antique while borrowing also from the cinquecento and the French Rococo. Their vision permeated every aspect of their designs, from the shape of the rooms to the smallest detail of ormolu beading, and the Adam mode became an integral part of the late 18th century style. A handsome volume, and well illustrated. (22347)   $45.00

Considerable responsibility rests with the architect in the selection of materials for any project, but the proper installation of the materials is equally as important as the selection. American-Franklin-Olean prepared these specifications for tile-work, to cover a large part of the house construction field. The specifications were divided into seven price classes, assuming the architect would use tile in proportion to the cost of the home. An attractive catalog, well illustrated. (22360)   $100.00

Craig Ellwood Architecture

McCoy, Esther

[California]. McCoy, Esther. Craig Ellwood Architecture. New York: Walker and Company, 1968. First edition. Oblong small quarto, pp 156, indexed, Illustrated with b/w and color photographs, architectural plans and drawings. Boards. Very Good in Good Mylar-Protected DJ.

Ellwood's houses grew out of something quite new: the practical possibilities of advanced, 20th-century construction. Still, Ellwood is no mere engineer. Because his discovery of architecture came through structure, structure remained his principal and favorite discipline. In an industry as thoroughly inefficient as that of American homebuilding, Ellwood was able to prove that logic, simplicity and exquisite taste can combine to produce buildings that are cheaper than those built daily by allegedly expert and cost-conscious builders. He created eloquent structures and spaces to produce some outstandingly successful integrations of architecture and landscape, often in a manner that seems like an abstraction of the Japanese. One of the most sought-after books on California modernist architecture. (22372)   $175.00

The Future of the Past: A Conservation Ethic for

Architecture, Urbanism, and Historic Preservation

Semes, Steven W.

[Architectural History]. Semes, Steven W. The Future of the Past A Conservation Ethic for Architecture, Urbanism, and Historic Preservation. W W Norton & Co Inc, 2009. First edition. quarto, 336 pp. Hardcover. New in new dustjacket.

A wonderful publication, as visually stunning as it is ambitious. For traditional builders, architects and urban planners. Called by preservation pioneer Clem Labine "The most important new book on Urban Architecture." Furthermore, Labine agrees with Semes' basic rejection of the Modernist theory that is embedded in the Secretary’s Standards – theory that has led to government promotion of stylistically dissonant construction in historic places. Instead, Semes argues persuasively that visual wholeness and continuity of historic areas should be the paramount design imperative. In many historic settings, new traditional architecture is the route to harmony with existing building fabric, and Semes calls for rethinking preservation policies that have led to so much governmentally dictated stylistic discord.
